Re: Call quality on the iPhone 5
Hi Neal, yes, this is carrier specific. The only carrier I've used with the iPhone in the United States is ATT. But I use the very same phone in New Zealand, and there, the quality of calls is pretty much indistinguishable from a landline. In the US on ATT, it is a much inferior experience and I know the duplexing issue you're talking about. Carriers have a choice over the codec in use, how much bandwidth each call takes up. ATT are squeezing a lot more calls into the same bandwidth and it sounds absolutely yuck. I've not had any experience with the other US carriers. I have to say I agree. I can always tell when someone is on a cell phone. But then, it's just the nature of the beast. I'm not looking for broadcast quality. What I do get frustrated with often is the poor duplexing on the devices. If someone is talking and you start talking, they won't hear you until they quit talking. Perhaps this is carrier specific? I'm guessing not, but I'm on this list to learn, so please correct me if and when the need arises. Re: Call quality on the iPhone 5
Hi, It seems that it is a carrier specific problem. I can't approve this behaviour on my cellphone provider. Although I don't have direct experience with the iPhone five, from what my friends who have it have said, the call quality is no different here in the US then using other cell phones. In fact using Skype over the iPhone is a lot more clear than using a cell phone call. Go figure. RE: Call quality on the iPhone 5
Hello Neal, First, it's good to see you here on the list. Many of us hadn't heard from you (meaning podcasts etc.) in quite a while. Second, I have noticed that call quality has been greatly improved on both ends of the call on the iPhone 5 at least for me. I should add though that my carrier has what they call HD Voice. I can tell you though that when I talk with a few different people, one using a basic cell phone on another carrier, one using an iPhone 5, and even one using an iPhone 5 on another carrier, the iPhone 5 on my carrier sounds best to me. As for the two on the other carrier, the iPhone 5 has the basic phone beat hands down regarding call quality. With the basic phone, I still notice distortion which isn't noticeable with the iPhone 5. I am sorry if this subject has been beaten to death. I just signed back up for this list because I am switching from Android back to apple. I was just reading about poor call quality on the iPhone 5. In my opinion, I have not heard good quality voice on a cell phone call no matter what phone I have used, but I wonder if people find the iPhone 5 any better or worse than the norm. Thanks much. Re: Call quality on the iPhone 5
Currently even if the carrier supported it, would the Iphone 5 be able to in the U.s? I know it is said that obviously the IPhone 5 has the ability to support the feature in some markets other than in this country, but then I also heard that the IPhone 5 does not yet do voice over LTE. Clearly one of my pieces of information is wrong or I am missing something. I guess it doesn't really matter though because there should be further generations of IPhones before the carriers support it here. Many of us hadn't heard from you (meaning podcasts etc.) in quite a while. Second, I have noticed that call quality has been greatly improved on both ends of the call on the iPhone 5 at least for me. I should add though that my carrier has what they call HD Voice.
