Re: Can I Hook Up An External Portable Hard Drive to My iPad Mini?
Thanks a lot, Sieghard, this is very helpful. I guess it would have been better to have mentioned when I originally posted that I have a pretty large music collection, and I wanted to find out how I can access it on my iPad Mini. So your info is very helpful indeed. I’ve read that I can put it all up on the cloud, but I also read that I have to download it before I can play it. All I wanted to do was play whatever I wanted from my collection immediately on my iPad Mini the same as I can on my laptop. Thanks again. Evan From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2016 12:35 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Can I Hook Up An External Portable Hard Drive to My iPad Mini? Hi Evan, I don’t intend to bash other list members, but I don’t think you received the correct information from anybody at this point. The short answer is No, you can’t hook up external hard drives. The slightly longer answer is that there are USB sticks which plug into your Lightning port and there are Wi-Fi enabled hard drives as well as network attached storage devices which allow you to access their information. The big restriction with any of these is that you will need to use whichever app is designed too work with the device you purchase. This means you can’t buy a Wi-Fi enabled hard drive, put all your music on it and then access said music from the music app on your device. Similarly you couldn’t buy a 64 Gb or 128 Gb USB stick with a Lightning port, plug it into your device and access the ffiles on it from just any app. You typically would have to download the app from the maker of your USB stick or hard drive and inside that app you ccan then see all the files on your sstorage device provided of course the app is accessible which is not a given. Another option is to pay for say 1 Tb of Dropbox storage or buy an Office 365 subscription from Microsoft which comes with 1 Tb of OneDrive storage. You can then have all your files in the cloud with one of these services and use their apps which are quite accessible to access the content. If it is mostly music you have there is an app called Cloudplayer (among others) which gives you a pretty good set of features and it allows you to access the music in Dropbox,, OneDrive, Google Drive etc. Jonathan Mosen also has a blog article on his website about significant accessibility improvements for the Synology Discstation. This is a company which makes 2-bay and 4-bay network attached storage devices. Apparently the interface to manage these is now much more accessible and according to Jonathan they also have an accessible iOS app which would give you access to all your music and I assume other files as well. But once again, it would be from inside their app and not with the stock Music app. Apple has relaxed some of their restrictions, but they still don’t allow you to access the file system the same way you can in Windows or Android. Well it does depend on what you want to do with that external hardrive. If it is to expand the overall memory of your iDevice for apps and other data, then there isn't really any way of doing this. If you want to have the external hard drive to play media content, like movies or music, then you could always get those external har drives that you could connect to through wi-fi, download the manufacturer's app and play the content that way.
