Ha! I forgot about that option. I think it does come with the OS. I just took a look at it. On my system there is the Apple dictionary and the American Oxford English Dictionary available. I don't remember if both were available by default, or if I had to download one of them. Hi David, Well, I think I rather pay more for it fully accessible dictionary then do that nonsense that you have to go through with the oxford concise. Perhaps some emails to the developers will result in a voiceover friendly change for a new version. Maybe get the folks at Apple is interested. About 20 years ago, Oxford English Dictionary 2nd edition that was 21 print volumes, was about $900 in print, became available for $130 on a CD Rom. Granted the OED 2nd edition had over six hundred thousand words, the cost of dictionaries have dropped dramatically. What you are paying for is the linguistic expertees that goes into the research on the history and usage of the words. RE: Dictionary app, American heritage 5th edition
There is the Oxford Dictionary Quick Search that requires an internet connection that is pretty accessible and is free. It has ads and if the definition is really long you can't do the usual three finger swipe up to scroll through. You can get beyond that by flicking right, but the visual definition on the screen doesn't change, but VoiceOver does read stuff not visible on the screen. There doesn't seem to be a share option with that one. I still like the dictionary.com app and paying a little to get rid of ads etc. If there was a full OED option that was accessible, I'd be really tempted. I've not found anything. Once you have typed in a word the definition is displayed on the screen. Fine for sighted people, not so good for VoiceOver users as I said. However, there is a more button. If you press that and then select Share, then you can select message or mail and the definition will be readable in that app. Once you have read it, then you cancel out and return to the dictionary. Or, instead of choosing one of those apps, you could select copy and then paste the definition into notes or whatever. Yeah I know, a pain to go through, especially for a short definition. Oh yes, the cost for the app was about 12 or 13 dollars. Re: Dictionary app, American heritage 5th edition
Richard, your points are ones we should all keep in mind. Over the last 20 years, access to information of all kinds has become easier and a lot cheaper, not to mention the volume of information has gone up tremendously. During the KNFB Reader launch, when people were proclaiming $100 to be completely outrageous, someone posted a list of the various scanning/text recognition systems through the years, from the first Kurzweil reader that was about the size of a washing machine and cost maybe $30,000, to the various PC-based solutions costing a couple thousand, and now, to the current app that costs $100 and can work better than any previous unit on a lowly pocket-sized iPod touch. We now have in a $400 package that fits in a pocket a much faster and more accurate solution than just a few years ago. This trend will only continue! I wish I had that tweet containing the various years and prices; it really made the point quite well. To put it another way... you now have a dictionary, probably a full library, in your pocket. fifteen or twenty years ago you'd be scanning print versions of a lot of that, or fast-forwarding through endless cassette tapes, or looking for something in volume 13 of a Braille version, etc. Ok, shutting up now as I feel quite old.
