My guess is, that you have left the VoiceOver focus on the spot where it shows
your next turn, which constantly updates with distance, etc.
Flick right once, to the search along route button, or pretty much anywhere
else on the screen and only go back to that spot if you want the updated
distance to your next turn.
VoiceOver stays silent in Google Maps if you are not focused on that upper left
spot.

I mostly use Google Maps to get directions for sighted drivers. I get the
normal navigation directions from the female voice that Google Maps uses. But
I also get much too frequent additional guidance for the next turn from my
VoiceOver / Siri male voice. I have checked, and the setting in Google Maps
for detailed navigation directions while walking is turned off.
I think I remember turning something on some time ago, but i can't remember
what is was. And I can't find any other setting to turn off.
I appreciate any thoughts what I can turn off to stop the extra speech from the
VoiceOver / Siri voice.
