This is very interesting. I'm going to try this via a text message to see if
it works from there as well.

While reading an e-mail message on your iPhone with a date included anywhere
within the message body, that date is identified as a LINK. By tapping
twice on that DATE/TIME LINK, you will open a page with the option to
CREATE NEW EVENT. By selecting this button, the native calendar app is
opened with the TITLE filled in according to the Subject: line of that
e-mail.

I don't use gmail so I simply can't answer this part of your question.

As for fantastical; it's an enhanced calendar app, the chief reason I use it
is to be able to create chains of events that occur on the same week day
repetitively. For instance; the Superior Evening Lions meet the first
Monday of the month.

Re: How to send Calendar appointments for automatic entry via Mail app?

2014-01-31 Thread Bill Gallik
First of all, it's the native calendar app that is integrated with the native
e-mail app. But Fantastical will be able to access this information.

As for the format of the e-mail; I experimented with several things such as
placing various keywords in the message body, but this didn't make much
difference. The key information that can be automatically entered into your
calendar via e-mail is:

TITLE: Whatever you put in your subject line of the e-mail is entered as the
calendar entry title.

DATE/TIME: By putting date and time information anywhere in the message body,
while reading that message, this information will be noted as a LINK.

LOCATION: Include a postal address in the body of the message to be integrated
into the entry, I can't say what happens if you place two (or more) addresses
in the message body.

You need not preface the DATE/TIME nor the LOCATION information with any
keywords.

By tapping on the (above noted) DATE/TIME LINK, the native calendar app will
open with the subject line entered into the entry title and the Date/Time and
address info entered into the appropriate fields.

One useful hint; if you have appointments with the same title, you can enter as
many date/time lines as needed. For example; as a board member of the North
Country Independent Living Center is Superior (Wisconsin), I needed to enter
the quarterly board meeting schedule. I sent a single e-mail to my iCloud
account with the following:

Subject: NCIL Quarterly Board Meeting

April 4, 2014, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
July 7, 2014, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
September 25, 2014, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

I was then able to tap each of these date/time lines and create the appropriate
calendar entries.

The location can be entered, but it must appear in the form of an address (69
21st Street, Superior, WI 54880) as opposed to the name of a place (North
Country Independent Living Office). Even if you combine both of the previous
references in a single line, the place name is not included in the Location
field.

Date formats seem to be fairly flexible, I've used:

7/23/2014
July 23, 2014
Sep. 25, 2014, 9:00-12:30

As well as other variations for date/time. If you only put a date in the body
message, it's presumed to be an All Day event (handy for birthday and
anniversary entries).

RE: How to send Calendar appointments for automatic entry via Mail app?

Yes, I got it with your help...and Bill's. Many thanks to you both.

Subject: Re: How to send Calendar appointments for automatic entry via Mail app?

When I double tap on the calendar event detected link, I get the option to
create event or show calendar. If I double tap on create event, it takes me to
the dialog to create an event that's already filled in with the information
from the email. I double tap on the done button, and it shows up on my calendar.

I don't see an option that says add to calendar. Are you running IOS 7.0.4?

So, I send the email to myself, and I get the announcement link Calendar
event detected. I double-tap on that and get the option to Add to Calendar,
on which I double-tap. The Calendar opens, but I'm not sure what the next
step(s) are. Can you explain how to complete this process?

 Thanks in advance. Keith.

The subject of the emails was Calendar and mail integration. Here's
what Brian had to say about it:

At this point, I've determined that sending an e-mail message to my
iPhone with the following will automatically fill in Title, Location,
Start Time and End Time; making entering calendar events quite convenient:

Of course, I am working with iOS Version 7.0.4; whether or not that
makes a difference I can't say because I don't have access to an
iPhone running an iOS previous to 7.0.
