Re: Audible subscription options and pricing, was: MP3 App that Can Be Speeded Up

2013-09-03 Thread Chris Chaffin

Hello all,
And just as one additional note about audible, any credits you do not use
will roll over to your next subscription. So you do not have to worry about
having to use your credits before your subscription runs out.
I also like the fact that all books that I have purchased are always there,
and can be accessed as many times as I wish.

Hi Sieghard,

One additional advantage related to Audible is the ability to get a book the
day it is released. I remember the days when I would request a book,
perhaps I got it in 6 months, perhaps I didn't receive it. It's a real kick
to hear about a book's release and have the ability to get it the same day
as our sighted colleagues can. Never thought I'd see the day when we could
get books when we want and on the same day as others.

I think for any serious reader who doesn't like to listen to books with a
synthesized voice Audible is a must. I can also access a lot of audio
books
from the CNIB (Canadian national Institute for the Blind) and in the
States

you of course have NLS, but I often can get very new releases on Audible
because the publishers do produce a lot of books as audio books and I find
that most of the readers are fantastic.
Yes, it costs money and everybody has to set their priorities, but if you
can afford to spend $229 a year or even every 2 years and prepay for 24
credits than paying just over $9.50 for a full length high quality audio
book is extremely reasonable by any standard. Often the Kindl version will
cost just as much and an actual paperback (let alone a hard cover) is even
more expensive.
It of course helps that because of devices like the iPhone and other
electronic gadgets listening to audio books is becoming a main stream
activity which many commutors and travelers embrace even if they are not
blind and when something becomes main stream it is always a good thing.

Hi Sieghard,

Additionally, sometimes Audible offers 3 books for 2 credits. When this
occurs, subscribers receive e-mails notifying them of the specials. I'm
in
the U.S, and I believe I pay $149.95 annually for a gold subscription
which

entitles me to 12 books. I'm very pleased with the service.

Hi Patty,

Before you get rid of your subscription you should know that if you buy
books from Audible without subscription it is much more expensive. As a
member you get a 30% discount. See the below example:

The Potato Factory: The Australian Trilogy, Book 1 by Bryce Courtenay
Regular Price: $34.97
Member Price: $24.48 or 1 Credit

Now, assume you have the Gold membership which is $14.95 a month. This

works

out to $179.40 a year and it entitles you to 12 books a year. I am making
the assumption you buy books worth 1 credit each since there are not many
which cost 2 credits.
With that membership you get the above book which as a non member costs
$34.97 for $14.95.
If you buy similar books, the $177.40 you spend for the Gold membership

only

buy you maybe 5 or 6 books a year as a non-member.
Unless you only buy 2 or 3 books a year I think a membership totally is

the

way to go with Audible. If you don't typically buy/read one book a months

or

even if you do, you can opt to buy all your credits at once instead of
paying the subscription price every month. Here you can buy either 12 or

24

credits in one go for the price of $170 for 12 credits or $230 for 24
credits. Please don't totally quote me on these prices since I didn't
look

them up.

Anyhow, they do give you small discount even if you buy 12 credits, with

the

monthly subscription you pay $177.40 per year and if you buy them all at
once you pay $170 or maybe even a few Dollars less.
The nice thing is that if you don't use them up all in one year that is I
think not a problem, as long as you use one every now and then they will
remain although there maybe a certain time limit. But even if you used

them
all up and have 0 credits, you are still considered a member for a
certain

period and get to take advantage of special offers.
Right now, for example, I bought 24 credits last November and I used them
all up a while back. Audible is currently giving me a promotion

Hi Terrie,

Yes, you don't need a subscription to use the app itself. First of all, you
can buy books from Audible at full price without a subscription and download
them with the Audible app. Accessing books synced to your phone via iTunes
is also no problem. At the top of the app are 3 tabs:

Cloud: This shows any Audible books you purchased

Device: This shows Audible books you purchased and downloaded to your device

via iTunes.

The current version of the Audible app is the best it has ever been.
Voiceover support is 100% and fantastic and I think for listening to audio

Re: MP3 App that Can Be Speeded Up

2013-09-02 Thread Kristeen Hughes
It's true you can buy Audible books at full price. That's no problem. When
talking about mp3 files that are not in the audible format, however, getting
iTunes to sync and make these files work properly is not an easy task on the PC
side. Also, though I have tried this method with my Mac, I could never see the
files on the iPhone or iPod. It's been my experience that a straight-forward
player app such as Speed up Player Pro was a lot more friendly.

Yes, you don’t need a subscription to use the app itself. First of all, you
can buy books from Audible at full price without a subscription and download
them with the Audible app. Accessing books synced to your phone via iTunes is
also no problem. At the top of the app are 3 tabs:

Cloud: This shows any Audible books you purchased
Device: This shows Audible books you purchased and downloaded to your device
iTunes: This is what you want, it accesses books you synced to your device

The current version of the Audible app is the best it has ever been.
Voiceover support is 100% and fantastic and I think for listening to audio
books it doesn’t get much better.

 Hi Terrie,

You can access MP3 books with the Audible app and Audible has a button for
Narration Speed at the bottom right of the screen. Your choices are 0.75x,
 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x and 3x.
You can also play MP3 files/books in the Downcast app and it also has speed

Audible subscription options and pricing, was: MP3 App that Can Be Speeded Up

2013-09-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

This works
out to $179.40 a year and it entitles you to 12 books a year. I am making
the assumption you buy books worth 1 credit each since there are not many
which cost 2 credits.
With that membership you get the above book which as a non member costs
$34.97 for $14.95.
If you buy similar books, the $177.40 you spend for the Gold membership only
buy you maybe 5 or 6 books a year as a non-member.
Unless you only buy 2 or 3 books a year I think a membership totally is the
way to go with Audible. If you don't typically buy/read one book a months or
even if you do, you can opt to buy all your credits at once instead of
paying the subscription price every month. Here you can buy either 12 or 24
credits in one go for the price of $170 for 12 credits or $230 for 24
credits. Please don't totally quote me on these prices since I didn't look
them up.

Anyhow, they do give you small discount even if you buy 12 credits, with the
monthly subscription you pay $177.40 per year and if you buy them all at
once you pay $170 or maybe even a few Dollars less.
The nice thing is that if you don't use them up all in one year that is I
think not a problem, as long as you use one every now and then they will
remain although there maybe a certain time limit. But even if you used them
all up and have 0 credits, you are still considered a member for a certain
period and get to take advantage of special offers.
Right now, for example, I bought 24 credits last November and I used them
all up a while back. Audible is currently giving me a promotion every months
where as long as I have less than 2 credits I can buy 3 extra credits once a
month for $28.68 Or $9.56 a credit. Now suddenly I can buy $30 or $40 books
which cost 1 credit for $9.56. This is actually the same great price you pay
if you buy 24 credits at once for $229, this also works out to approx. $9.54
or something like that.

I suggest you check their website or you can of course call their toll free
customer service at 1-888-283-5051. If you feel uncomfortable trying to find
all that info online you could just say you are a blind member and would
like information about buying 12 credits all at once and the conditions as
far as how long these 12 credits stay active etc.

Thank you! That was a lot of info to type, smile.
I appreciate it.
I had been contemplating letting go of my Audible subscription to save
money, but I'm not sure I really want to do that.
I do know you are right, books are much more expensive at full price.
I'll just have to think about it.

RE: Audible subscription options and pricing, was: MP3 App that Can Be Speeded Up

2013-09-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Les,

Yes, the buy 3 books for 2 credits is one promotion, currently there also is
a daily buy where a book is offered for sometimes as little as $2.95.
I think for any serious reader who doesn't like to listen to books with a
synthesized voice Audible is a must. I can also access a lot of audio books
from the CNIB (Canadian national Institute for the Blind) and in the States
you of course have NLS, but I often can get very new releases on Audible
because the publishers do produce a lot of books as audio books and I find
that most of the readers are fantastic.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

One additional advantage related to Audible is the ability to get a book the
day it is released. I remember the days when I would request a book, perhaps I
got it in 6 months, perhaps I didn't receive it. It's a real kick to hear
about a book's release and have the ability to get it the same day as our
sighted colleagues can. Never thought I'd see the day when we could get books
when we want and on the same day as others.

can afford to spend $229 a year or even every 2 years and prepay for 24
credits than paying just over $9.50 for a full length high quality audio
book is extremely reasonable by any standard.

I'm in
the U.S, and I believe I pay $149.95 annually for a gold subscription which
entitles me to 12 books.

Here you can buy either 12 or
 24
credits in one go for the price of $170 for 12 credits or $230 for 24
credits. Please don't totally quote me on these prices since I didn't look

But even if you used
 them
all up and have 0 credits, you are still considered a member for a certain
period and get to take advantage of special offers.
Right now, for example, I bought 24 credits last November and I used them
all up a while back. Audible is currently giving me a promotion every
 months
where as long as I have less than 2 credits I can buy 3 extra credits once
 a
month for $28.68 Or $9.56 a credit. Now suddenly I can buy $30 or $40
 books
which cost 1 credit for $9.56. This is actually the same great price you
 pay
if you buy 24 credits at once for $229, this also works out to approx.
 $9.54
 or something like that.

2013-09-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kristeen,

I don't want to dispute what you say and if the app you mentioned works well
than that's great. However, I just thought I better back up what I say about
using Audible and I found it straight forward. I am not sure how you get
books into the Speed Up Player Pro app and whether it's a free or paid app,
however, here is what I did to play a book in the Audible app:

1. I opened iTunes on my PC.

2. I selected Add Folder to Library from the File menu, browsed to a
folder containing an audio book in MP3 format. In my case I chose a book I
downloaded a long time ago from the CNIB, it is the book The Mediterranean
Caper by Cliver Cussler and my version consists of 5 separate MP3 files.

3. Once I clicked on Select Folder, I heard the familiar tri tone
iTunes makes when it's done with a task. I now went into the list view of
all my songs in the music library.

4. Since the files had no ID3 tags, they show up at the very bottom of
my list of songs. I highlighted all 5 files, then pressed Control+I for Get
Info and gave them a proper name, entered Clive Cussler as the artist etc.
I then went to the Options tab and specified them as Audio Book. After I
pressed OK I heard the tri tone again and now the files were gone from the
music library.

5. I went to my Books library, selected to see Audio Books and here was
now my book.

6. I now connected my iPhone, clicked on it and checked the Books radio
button. I have Sync selected books checked, I tabbed to the treeview where
I see all the audio books in my Books library. The book was now listed, I
pressed the space bar to check it's checkbox.

7. I now tabbed to Apply and pressed the space bar. It took maybe 30
seconds for the 5 files to sync to my device.

8. I now opened the Audible app, refreshed the library and double tapped
on the iTunes tab. The Mediterranean Caper was listed, when I double tapped
on it I saw the 5 parts/files and double tapping on the first started the
book.

Including spending a few minutes adding the ID3 tags to the files it took me
maybe 5 or 6 minutes to do this. Normally I use Chapter and Vers to convert
all my old MP3 books with multiple files into a single file M4B book. This
is also a bit of work, but once it's done I can sync a book to my device and
it goes straight into the Books library and I can skip the first 5 steps,
all I have to do is check it under the Books section of my device and sync
it. As I said, I am not saying this is the way to go, it is everybody's
choice, but I have the Audible app on my device anyways and use it all the
time to listen to my Audible books. If I want to listen or re-listen to the
odd book I got as an MP3 book then for me this is how I choose to do it. One
thing to remember is that you do have to refresh the Audible library either
by swiping down with 3 fingers or by going to Settings and tap on Refresh
library.

Sieghard

It's true you can buy Audible books at full price. That's no problem. When
talking about mp3 files that are not in the audible format, however,
getting iTunes to sync and make these files work properly is not an easy
task on the PC side. Also, though I have tried this method with my Mac, I
could never see the files on the iPhone or iPod. It's been my experience
that a straight-forward player app such as Speed up Player Pro was a lot
more friendly.

Device: This shows Audible books you purchased and downloaded to your device

iTunes: This is what you want, it accesses books you synced to your device
via iTunes.

The current version of the Audible app is the best it has ever been.
Voiceover support is 100% and fantastic and I think for listening to audio
books it doesn't get much better.

Hi Terrie,

You can access MP3 books with the Audible app and Audible has a button for
Narration Speed at the bottom right of the screen. Your choices are 0.75x,
1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x and 3x.

You can also play MP3 files/books in the Downcast app and it also has speed
control. However, it is not a free app.

Depending how fast you want to speed them up, the native music app will allow
