RE: NFB Newsline with Read2Go
It is an app primarily for Bookshare members. In fact, if you are not a Bookshare member, I'm not sure you would want to spend $20.00 for the app. As a Bookshare member, I love the app. The description in the app store is pretty good, so I won't repeat it here. Just make sure you spell it correctly when looking it up. It is the word Read then the digit 2 then the word Go without any spaces. Re: NFB Newsline with Read2Go
I have never read a newspaper with read to go, only books, so I hope the following is true for a newspaper, too. Along the top of the screen, just below and very close to the status bar, are the bookshelf, navigation, set bookmark, and settings button. If you find the bookshelf button very near the upper left hand corner, you can either slide your finger along the row, or flick right, to get to them. Probably what you want is the navigation button. Once you find the section you want, either by sliding your finger or flicking, there should be a playback, or read button, on the left, probably near the top, to read where you have selected to go. It greatly depends on how well whatever you are reading has been, if I may invent a word, daisyized as to how well the navigation section will work. In my opinion, it is almost better to experiment with using the buttons in the navigation with something you haven't started reading yet, or be absolutely sure to set a bookmark so you can get back to where you were. Earlier today, I decided to play around with these buttons, and discovered, after it was too late to have set a bookmark, that a large section of a book I was reading was not marked up very well. Of course, it was the section to which I wanted to return. It took a lot of time and cussing before I finally figured out how to get back to where I wanted to be. RE: Advantages of NFB Newsline over Read2Go for Reading Newspapers
Eileen, I have not used R2G for newspapers but I have used it for lots of books. I see a couple of advantages to R2G and one for Newsline. As I write this I am navigating through our local paper, the Washington Post, with Read2Go. the first section I find is Obituaries. I Want to bypass that entirely and go to the next section, which is Section A (BTW, I have learned that this is really the front page.) the button called Next Section, located at the bottom right corner of the screen takes me from obituary to obituary. How do I efficiently bypass the entire Obituary section? I looked in the Navigation screen and all I could find was a list of obituaries. While there I was able to pull down the second screen of obituary titles and get to section A but I'd like to be able to do that with one gesture. That is, unless you tell me of a navigating method I don't know, an advantage to Newsline. With NFB Newsline the paper is being streamed; it's never downloaded to your phone. That became a disadvantage to me last weekend when we were visiting my in-laws, who still have DSL, and I could not locate an unsecured WIFI and I didn't want to rack up data usage charges. Suspecting this might happen I downloaded books with R2G and podcasts with Downcast before we left so I was not without entertainment. When we were at a friend's house where there was WIFI I could have downloaded papers from R2G but never thought of it. Second, I personally find the Heather voice available on R2G far more pleasing to my ear than what is available with either VO on my phone or the voice on my Victor when I download papers onto that. PS Is this not amazing? Years ago we never could read newspaper at all. Now we're discussing the merits of not one, but two alternatives. Life is good! Re: Advantages of NFB Newsline over Read2Go for Reading Newspapers
Hi. You can also download content with the Newsline app by going in to subscriptions. If you need to add papers to your subscriptions, you can do so through the settings menu. The other advantage to using newsline is that you can also email articles to yourself, which cannot be done with r2g. OH, and then there's the fact that r2g costs money, but that's not an issue for you now since you purchased it already. You can use the subscriptions button/feature in the NFB app to download the periodacles to your device for offline viewing.
