RE: Question about FaceTime and the hearing impaired

2013-09-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Just like a Skype call sounds much better a Facetime call also can take
advantage of the much wider bandwidth of a WiFi or 3G/LTE connection and
also keep in mind that Skype or Facetime is digital all the way whereas a
regular phone call is analogue and it is highly compressed.

Subject: Question about FaceTime and the hearing impaired

Good evening all.
Just had a lovely FaceTime call. But have a question.
Why does it sound so much better than a regular landline or cellular call?
Is it because it's all done over wifi and is using the excellent microphone
on the iPhone? Sorry if this sounds a stupid question, but I am considering
using FaceTime because despite my hearing impairment I can really hear the
person, whereas a regular landline or cellular call is good, but cannot
always make out what they are saying, especially if the words use letters
that are high in pitch, such as s.
Any responses greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Question about FaceTime and the hearing impaired

2013-09-12 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, FT is a really high bandwidth app because of the video. That's part of
why it sounds as good as it does. The hardware in I Devices is also a factor
I'm sure.

Then again , Rogers and ATNT were/are, both infamous for drastically reducing
the celular bandwidth they provide to smart phone users, particularly IPhone
users. My gf is on ATNT and even though she doesn't have a smart phone, her
calls sound like garbage.

Many of my customers on Rogers sounded just terrible back in the days of the
3gs and 4, but simbian users seemed to be just fine.

Best,

Wow! I see. I remember Viber sounding exactly the same. So this is why.
It's all digitally processed at both ends.

Hi,

Yes. One thing though, at least in the U.S., networks haven’t used an analog
cell network in over 5 years. Its all digital. I’m guessing this is the same
for most of the western world.
