I am not sure about this. I have read it is to allow apple to remove apps they 
want from your phone. Not sure it is true but I do know they updated my phone 
when I had it set not to do it automatically  So I will wait until others see 
if things disappear from their phones or things are added they did not want.

There's a flaw with Apple web kit which allows a hacker to remote into your 
device via Safari and execute  code.
This is why it's a big deal.

I got an email from my insurance ID theft protection company about the
security alerts and urging everyone to update. Yes, it may be a
generic security flaw that always appears, or it could be something
more important. Whatever the case, I figure since I got the email from
my insurance company about the issue, and it appears the same news is
on the national media, there must be something notable about 14.4 and
the flaws it patches. This proves my personal motto that whenever
Apple puts out an update, aside from the major .0 releases that is, it
is a great idea to update since you never know what security issues or
other odds and ins may be fixed.

It is because Apple has reported that a vulnerability that has now been 
patched, ‘may have been exploited’, though Apple doesn’t go into detail 
about which volnerability specifically. Such a report is rare for Apple to 
publish.
