Re: An Interesting iPad App

2014-03-19 Thread Angelvoice
Oh dear!!! I had no idea my post would cause so much distress among the
ranks. I am relatively new and do not post much here so I was not aware of
the unwritten or unspoken code that abounds. My sincere apologies,
Marianne. My intent was simply to share a link to an app I thought might be
helpful. I myself have very poor eyesight (almost blind) but I have an
incredibly strong magnifier (60 pwer) that I use almost constantly. So,
apps that can enlarge text, increase contrast, etc., are of interest to me
and I hoped to others here as well.

I did not mean to offend or upset anyone.

Wil and Christopher, thank you for your posts. Your words made me feel
better. (Smile.)

I will likely not post again. Too much drama here.

each of us determine if we want to read more of the email or check out

Moderator's important note please read - Was Re: An Interesting iPad App

2014-03-19 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all. I'd like to address the issue of the iPad app and the more than
10 messages it generated from it. I see two sides to this and I'm not
sure where I stand. I won't make any sort of list policy because this
isn't worth it. Only you, the list member can choose how to handle this,
but the bottom line, sending continuous messages to the list to express
your opinion about how it should or shouldn't be done is serving no
purpose and just wasting time and energy. Below are some suggestions for
both a person giving information, and a person reading the information.

1. If you are posting information about an app, or some news which you
feel is important to share with the list, perhaps you can consider
giving at least 1 or 2 sentences about what you are posting about rather
than just the link. For example, if i find a new app which i think is
the best check book app of all times I might post a message with the
subject of new check book app, or the name of the app. In the body of
the message I might say, hey all, I found this new check book app which
I think might work for everyone. I don't know if it's voice over
friendly, or if it works with low vision users. Here is the link. That
way a person who reads the list and isn't interested in reading about
check book apps won't bother with the link. Or if a person is looking
for one, and is interested, will already have the name of the app or at
least some information, along with the link.

2. If you are reading a message that someone posts and they only give a
link then my suggestions follow. First off, only you can decide to enter
on a link to follow it to see the information. If the message is too
boring for you, or you can't take the 30 seconds or so to find out what
it is by going to the page, then feel free to skip it. Go ahead, no one
on this list will care if you delete a message without having read it.
If you agree or disagree with the way someone posts on list, please feel
free to take it up with that person directly rather than airing your
displeasure on the list. Doing it on the list just adds to the high
traffic and doesn't really solve anything.

So, the bottom line for both poster of information, and reader of
information is, try to consider the other person's feelings, and mode of
posting. Not everyone is good at tapping or clicking on links and
reading information from a web browser, yet at the same time, we as
information givers, don't always have time to write out or paste the
information which is already on a web page just to make it super easy
for those who can't or won't visit a link. So, why not that middle
ground compromise? If you the information giver follows my suggestion
and gives a brief explanation about the app or link, and if you the
reader tries to cut other posters some slack, I think things will go a
lot more smoothly.

RE: An Interesting iPad App

2014-03-18 Thread Wil James
You could have done the same thing I did, which was to simply click the
link. To save you time, wear and tear on fingers, devices, etc., and
energy, here is what the app is all about.

MagniFire
iOS iPad
*** $29.99 FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY! ***

MagniFire turns your iPad into a full-featured, text-aware low-vision
magnifier! High-end desktop models can cost over $3,000. MagniFire is the
future of low-vision magnifiers!

MagniFire is the only low-vision magnifier for iPad that uses Blindsight's
patented text detection algorithms to HELP YOU READ by organizing all the
text in a snap and presenting it line by line.

When is MagniFire for me?
* If you struggle to see, especially to read
* If you have AMD (age-related macular degeneration), Glaucoma, Diabetic
Retinopathy, Cataracts, or other visual impairment
* If you own - or have considered buying - a portable or desktop video
magnifier but want the portability of the iPad and the convenience of
carrying only one device for all your tablet needs.

How does it work?

1. Point the iPad camera at an everyday challenge and tap to Freeze the
View:
* a PRODUCT LABEL such as a MEDICINE BOTTLE
* a MENU
* an OPERA PLAYBILL
* a HANDOUT at a CONFERENCE
* a NEWSPAPER or MAGAZINE
* a small OBJECT such as JEWELRY
Alternatively, choose an image from another source

2. For TEXT areas, let MagniFire use OCR to READ THE DESIRED TEXT FOR YOU,
and NAVIGATE EASILY to the desired part of the document or label

3. CHOOSE YOUR ENHANCED VIEW
* Magnify 3 to 30 times
* Choice of CONTRAST and COLOR BLAST MODES

4. ZOOM / PAN around OBJECTS and PHOTOS

Coming soon:

MagniFire for iPhone and iPod Touch!

Please let us hear from you - we built MagniFire FOR YOU and we live to make
it easier for you to read and see.
What's new
The obligatory iOS7 update--but we've wrapped in a few major improvements to

I didn't have a problem with the original post. It was pretty obvious
that the link would take you to information on a magnification app. I
understand people are busy and handle mailing lists differently, but I
don't think a poster should have to worry about whether someone is too
busy to follow a link or not. The poster is busy as well, and if we
place too much of a burden on the information a poster should include in
their message then we'll just have fewer posters sharing information
with us. Not every message has to be useful to every single member of
the list. If you don't want to follow a link or aren't interested enough
in a post to click on a link then just delete the message an go on.
There's plenty of other messages on the list.

I usually don't share interesting links either, because you get the 20
questions asked of you. How much does it cost? Is it accessible? There is only
one way to find out if it works for you and how much it costs. Can you guess
what that is? You win the prize! You click the link.
