Hi foks,

Is there a good GPS app for hiking? I have apps for on the road but as I’m
doing more off road hiking they are not helpful.

What are people using for hiking navigation and GPS info?

Thank you,

I’m looking for something that would be useful on say a 100 or 200 mile hike in
the woods, say At trail. Either something GPS locations can be added to or if
possible even have it follow us on a map to indicate if we are on the trail.

I’m new at this so not sure what is the most helpful.

For non-established trails, are you looking for bread crumb navigation?

Prominent survival bloggers have evaluated iPhones and $500 Garman
navigation devices in places without cell signals and found both offer
the same level of accuracy. Realize though, calling the iPhone’s
navigation capability GPS is inaccurate. While it does use the Geo
positioning System from the United States Government, the iPhone also
uses the Global Navigation Satellite System or GLONAS from the Russian
government, cell towers, Wi-Fi locations, and starting with the 2017

I can't figure out how to make it talk. Loadstone tells me it has found GPS,
then goes silent. There must be something I need to set, but I can't find it
in the manual.

Hi foks,

Is there a good GPS app for hiking? I have apps for on the road but as I’m
doing more off road hiking they are not helpful.

What are people using for hiking navigation and GPS info?

Thank you,

Eric Caron

Re: GPS Apps for hiking?

2020-05-08 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
I have an old one here called Ariadne GPS which allows you to set Poi's and
then it gives you distance and compass bearing - clock
face directions to the chosen poi.
Still seems quite reliable, don't know why I didn't use it more or lately
since I walk water courses as much as public highways.
Think it good for on-water as well as off-road. Sailing/canoeing is popular
too.

Re: GPS Apps for hiking?

2020-05-07 Thread Eric Caron
Thanks folks,

Keep the suggestions coming.

I’ll try the near by explorer. I had the app but never played with it. I have
good coverage so I’ll see if the paid version is worth it if it actually is
useful when hiking.

I’ve got a lot to learn to see if it is helpful.

If other apps might be more useful send the tips my way.

I think you will find the full program is still $79.99 on the App store.
However, the free version has had some upgrades recently.

But, you will need GPS coverage and Data coverage since the free version
doesn't download the maps.
