RE: How do you use 3d touch with Voiceover?

2015-09-26 Thread Nicki keck
I am having trouble conceptualizing this too. I have my mail app set the exact
same way, so I don’t get it. I listened to the applevis podcast about it
today, and I sort of understand how you are supposed to use it, but it didn’t
seem like something to get excited about, unless I’m really missing something
big. True, you could sned a new tweet in tweetings without having to go into
the app, but usually, when I tweet, it’s when I’m thinking of checking my
twitter anyway so I would go into the app anyway.

I'm having trouble conceptualizing how the 3D touch thing is supposed to work
even for the sighted world. When Tim Cook demonstrated it on Stephen colbert
the other night, the email app was the one he used. It sounded as if he was
looking at an abbreviated list of messages and by pressing down slightly on the
one of interest, he could peek at a summary of that message. If he was
interested in reading the whole thing, he could press down further to pop the
entire message open.

I realize the concept will no doubt expend as users put their collective brains
to this technology but as far as the current email app goes, I'm not getting
how it would benefit VoiceOver users. I currently have my mail app set up to
read me five lines of each message so that gives me an audible peek at each
one. Double tapping on the message to pop it open in order to read the whole
thing really doesn't take a lot of additional time.

As I said, I'm sure I'm missing a lot of how this new technology works and
hopefully VoiceOver users will be able to get some benefit from it.

…Hi Mary, I've not been able to open the App Switcher using 3D Touch as I've
seen described in some mainstream publications. I'm wondering if this has
deliberately been disabled, or whether I've yet to master the knack for this
one.

I agree with others in this thread re peak and pop in Mail. I don't find that
very beneficial. However I do very much enjoy all the extra shortcuts on the
home screen. Now that I've been texting on the phone for 24 hours, I get a cool
list of contacts when I firmly press on the Messages icon. When I choose from
the list, focus is placed right in the edit field, ready for me to type or
dictate. It's pretty slick.

Re: How do you use 3d touch with Voiceover?

2015-09-25 Thread Mary Otten
I just got my 6S this afternoon. I have briefly tried force touch. And I am not
having very much luck either. I did not try it within the email app, as I
frankly don't see where it's a big advantage for us. But I haven't been able to
get it to do anything useful on screen either. The registers but then it seems
like apps just open. And that's not what I want. At least I don't think so. A
little bit frustrating. Takes me back to my first iPod touch when I was ready
to throw it through the window for the first few weeks. I'm sure this is going
to take a lot of practice.

I listened to it. I am starting to get it a bit. You double tap and hold for
feedback then press either softly or hard. Sometimes it tries to move the icon.

Think you're right about your impression of Jonathan's podcast. It will take
practice. Has anyone had success opening the app switcher the way you're
supposed to be able to do it on the 6S with a swipe instead of the double
tapping of home button?

Well, it is very early days for 3-D touch. I have the idea that it is going to
be more useful for sided folks then it will be for us. But I think it will be
useful for us. What phone do you have now? I upgraded from a 5S. And for me, I
think it is definitely worth having upgrade. If I had a six, I don't know that
I would've upgraded. Probably not.

boat with respect to experimenting. I won’t get my 6S for another week or 2 and
by then you guys probably have figured it all out.

I have the 6 plus. I just got it a few months ago so won’t be able to upgrade
for some time and I think that’s OK.

Re: How do you use 3d touch with Voiceover?

2015-09-25 Thread Alan Lemly

2015-09-25 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Alan,
I agree with you about the email app. I don't see where the Pek and pop thing
is going to do us a lot of good as voiceover users. But I think there maybe
some useful things in other apps. For instance, with the notes app, where you
can immediately open a new note easily. Or the maps app, if you travel and use
cabs, and need to go home. Those were two things in Jonathan's demo. And I'm
sure third-party app developers will come up with things. Dropbox already
supports it for instance.

Re: How do you use 3d touch with Voiceover?

2015-09-25 Thread John Diakogeorgiou
I haven't found it to be useful in mail. The main reason is that if I
preview a message, it can be hard to get out of that mode. However,
when using it on the camera, I was able to choose whether to take a
selfie, back picture, and several types of videos.
I noticed when listening to Jonathans podcast on the Live picture,
that I heard him double tap and hold to invoke the 3d touch feature.
It will be interesting to see what developers do with this feature. I
imagine that it could be fun when playing games for example.

Re: How do you use 3d touch with Voiceover?

2015-09-25 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi John, in the Live Photos demo, I'm not double tapping and holding, just
locating the icon with a flick or tap, then lifting my finger, then placing it
on the screen being sure not to move it at all and pressing firmly. Writing it
down or explaining it makes it sound more complicated than it really is, and I
think everyone will get the hang of it pretty quickly.
Just lift your finger, then press down again with some firmness. The phone will
give you haptic feedback to let you know it's understood your firm press.

Re: How do you use 3d touch with Voiceover?

2015-09-25 Thread Jonathan Mosen

Hi Jonathan,
I don't text that much, but if I did, I could see how that could be useful.
There is a new Twitter update that implements 3-D touch. I don't think my
Twitter client of choice has done that yet. It will be interesting to see what
you can get from the home screen.
