RE: Sonos CEO says Amazon, Google aren’t "doing anything interesting" in audio - The Verge

That is good to know, I thought Sonos could run alongside either Alexa or
Google Assistant. I think maybe it's because I think Google has started some
sort of legal action against Sonos because they claim the Sonos voice assistant
is using Google technology or whatever stupid thing.

Just as an FYI, but on my Sonos Roam, I can run Alexa and the Sonos Assistant
at the same time. If I were to use Google Assistant then that would be the only
assistant I could have running.

You can, first of all the Five is the only speaker which doesn't have
microphones, their 3 soundbars all do as does the Sonos One, Move and Roam (the
latter two are their rechargeable, portable speakers). As somebody else pointed
out, there is a Sonos One SL as well as versions of the soundbars which don't
have microphones. As for the Five, all you would have to do is put an Echo Dot
in the same room as your Five or stereo pair of Fives and then set up the Sonos
Five as the default speaker in the Alexa app and it is basically like having
Alexa on the speaker, of course you would not get the Sonos voice assistant,
but it primarily shines for Sonos related stuff like asking it to group
speakers and so on.

I can't wait to find out what the Era 100 and 300 have to offer and there are
rumours that a larger Era 500 will follow later, but of course nobody really
knows whereas the 100 and 300 are confirmed and most likely will be announced
shortly as is the second generation Move. The Move by the way is an amazing
speaker, I think it is relatively close to the Five in sound quality and it
does have microphones.

Later this year the first of the 4 new categeories Sonos said they wil l enter
will be announced and I sure hope it will finally be a headset although it is
expected that another of these categories will be car audio. Sonos is
definitely still king whenb it comes to multi-room audio with their broad
offering of speakers from the small and larger portable (Roam and Move) to the
Sonos One and Sonos Five, the 3 sound bars (Ray, Beam and Arc) and the Sonos
wireless Sub and Sub Mini. Lastly there is the Amp which can connect either to
traditional bookshelf, tower or architectural speakers (in-wall and in-ceiling)
and the Sonos Port which doesn't get as much hipe, but it's a great device if
you have a very good existing stereo system or surround system and you want to
add it into the Sonos eco system. Combine all that with a huge selection of
online music services you can connect to in the Sonos app, Airplay 2 support
and Bluetooth streaming (for now only possible to the Roam and Move, but
expected to potentially be on the new Era speakers) and you have an incredibly
versatile system. I even read an article about a new receiver (I think it might
have been Yahama, but could have been a different brand) which has some sort of
Sonos integration built into the amp.

I heard a Charge five and the sound was awesome! Unfortunately, it did not have

Blue Tooth. For those using sonos, do you wish you could use it with Alexa?

But to be clear, it is not possible to enable both Alexa and Google Assistant
at the same time, but it's not too difficult to switch; I find I prefer to have
Alexa on my Sonos speakers since I have it set up in the Alexa app that Apple
Music is my default service and this way I can also use it for asking Alexa to
play any of my audio books on any of my Sonos speakers.
We also have a few Google speakers around the house which I typically prefer
for asking about stuff, as for home automation most of our stuff works through
Alexa just as it does through Google. Our older Honeywell T5 thermostat is the
exception, it used to work with Alexa and I have the skill set up and it says
it is linked, but whenever I ask Alexa to change the temperature she says she
can't find the device or something similar, but I got it to work fine with
Google Assistant.

Sonos has three options unless you get the models without microphones. Those
options are Alexa, Google, and Sonos. You can run Sonos alongside Google and
Alexa. Sorry if I evoked one or another of your speakers. Both Sonos and Google
have Hey before them to prevent such issues. Sonos is rather basic but is very
nice for controlling the alarm when you are half asleep in the morning and need
to have music changed or volume along with your alarm.

10 Sonos speakers in an apartment is certainly a lot unless your apartment is
bigger than most people's houses! I am actually in the process of downsizing my
Sonos system a bit, we currently have 3 stereo pairs of Sonos On (bathroom,
kitchen and my woodworking shop) and I used to have a stereo pair of Five in
the bedroom as well as a set of One SL as rear speakers for our Sonos surround
setup in the living room.
After we did a renovation a year ago combining our master bedroom (which wasn't
that big) with another bedroom next door to a larger master bedroom and making
the third bedroom upstairs and a short hallway part of the now much larger
living room, I put in-wall speakers into the new bedroom wall which are
connected to a Sonos Amp which sits on a high shelf in a walk-in closet. I then
replaced the One SL speakers with the set ofg Fives for a better rear surround
experience. This leaves me with the 2 One SL speakers as well as the 2 stereo
pair of Sonos One from the kitchen and my workshop and I am planning to sell
all 6 of them since I now bought a second Move to make a stereo pair and this
will be in the kitchen and it can go into my workshop oru outside if we want it
there since it has a rechargeable battery. Of course I may end up selling the
pair of Fives as well if the new Era 100 and 300 have upfiring speakers for a
better Dolby Atmos experience and ultimately we are also planning a bathroom
reno and I am pretty sure I will at that stage go back to in-wall or in-ceiling
speakers connected to an Amp instead of having the Sonos Ones mounted to the
wall. 2 sets of my Ones are first generation so I can get the 15% upgrade
credit on them which I can then use for adding some of the Era 100 or 300, it
was definitely a smart move when Sonos introduced these upgrade credits. I had
quite a bit old Sonos gear from around 2009/2010 and all of that qualified for
the 30% upgrade credit and since Sonos still let's you sell it, I got some
pretty good deals on the newer stuff.

I have a Sonos Roam, and I do use it with Alexa. I could also use it with
Google assistant if I wanted to. I think other Sonos speakers also have Alexa
as an option.

I heard a Charge five and the sound was awesome! Unfortunately, it did not have
Alexa integration. I decided to go for a Marshall Alexa powered speaker with
Blue Tooth. For those using sonos, do you wish you could use it with Alexa?

I thought about grabbing a Sonos Move this week as I have a coupon for a
discount that expires Sunday. But now I am going to wait and see if they will
refresh that model. I bought a roam last year and gave it to Nicki, my wife,
who had a specific need for it and it serves her well. The accessibility of the
Sonos system is very good except on the Mac. I made several requests to have
their Mac app as accessible as the PC and iPhone app.
Regarding the battery status, however, I have several Sony Headphones that will
give me the battery status with the push of a button. I have two WH1000-XM4
which still sell on Amazon for around $250 even though the XN5 model is
available for around $350. The right side of the headphones are touch but very
accessible. The left side has push buttons. One button speaks the battery
status when pushed while the headphones are in operation.
If I didn’t already own the WH1000-XM4 I would have the XM5 because of the
greater noise reduction for making calls in a crowded room. But the XN4 are my
go to headphones on the iPhone and totally accessible.
Getting back to Sonos, I have never been disappointed with their quality or
their committment to accessibility. If I lived in a house rather than an
apartment, I would own a lot more than the ten Sonos speakers that I currently
do own.

Thanks for that: am interested in what the Era models will be like.

While on the subject of Sonos: I was wondering recently whether there are any
other brands who have speakers which one can speak to and get the information
about the battery spoken back. When I discovered I had access to Sonos Voice I
quickly got it set up and was blown away by the fact that I could do that. To
my mind, that makes them eminently accessible. There are other bluetooth
speakers and headphones on which one can press a button and get that
information but this is the first time I’ve seen anything quite like what I can
do with my Roam and Move.
