RE: filebrowser was: Re: Dropbox issue seems to be fixed

2017-03-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sandy,

Yes, it is a type of external hard drive although it usually is more than one
drive. NAS stands for network attached storage and it is typically an enclosure
into which you install anywhere from 2 to 4 drives (larger ones are available,
but typically those are very expensive and for commercial use). The NAS is then
connected directly to your router via ethernet cable, some may offer wireless
connectivity, but for maximum speed a wired gigabit ethernet connection is best.
You can configure a NAS so that both drives, let's say you have two 3 Gb drives
in it) become one 6 Gb drive or you can set them up so that you have access to
3 Gb of storage and the second drive is used as a backup for the first, these
are the various RAID configurations and most NAS makers use other protocols to
achieve this.
You typically have a web type user interface like what you have with a router
to configure your NAS and some routers can act like a NAS if they have a USB
port to which you can connect an external USB hard drive.
The nice thing is that a NAS is a stand-alone drive, if you have say two
computers in the house and an Apple TV as well as mobile devices each device
can access the NAS independently and it is not like an external USB hard drive
connected to a computer which can also be shared via a network, but it then is
only available if the computer that it is connected to is on.
I have had a simple Dlink DNS323 two-drive NAS for about 10 years now, it still
uses the ld drives with the ribbon connector, but it works and I have, for
example, my entire music library in uncompressed FLAC format on this drive.
It's about 100 Megabytes and my Sonos system can access this music any time
without the need for a computer to be on. Via the Apple TV version of
FileBrowser I can also access movies and pictures I have on this drive from my
Apple TV and the same goes for my iPhone as long as I am at home and connected
to my WiFi.
I am not sure what you mean by "does this mean, then, that we have full access
to all these drives regardless of their previous inaccessibility with
voice-over".
There are newer NAS drives from the company called Synology and they have made
their user interface fully accessible, Jonathan Mosen has an article about
this. With one of these you can use their accessible iOS app and in fact have
full access to all the files on your NAS from anywhere you have a WiFi or cell
data connection.

Regards,
Sieghard

thank you for this!
Is a local NAS drive basically a hardware storage drive? does this mean, then,
that we have full access to all these drives regardless of their previous
inaccessibility with voice-over? or am I misunderstanding as usual?
Thanks, Sandy

You can link it to your Dropbox account and instead of the Dropbox app you can
then see and browse/open all your files from the FileBrowser app.
In addition to support for all the major cloud storage services you can also
connect to any local NAS drives you may have (network attached storage) or
computers as long as they are on the same WiFi network.
I haven't tried to connect yet when I'm not connected to the same WiFi, but I
think it si somehow also possible.

Hi everyone, A friend tipped me about the app filebrowser (not free but easy
to use and fully vo compatible). IU use that now to get access to my dropbox
files and for me it fixes the problem and is a nice alternative so i though
I would share it because it might help some other people out as well.

RE: filebrowser was: Re: Dropbox issue seems to be fixed

2017-03-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

I figured out the user name and password for my NAS drive, but still have not
figure out how to access my Windows 10 laptop. I tried my Microsoft Id and
password as well as the PIN I set to replace the password for signing in on the
laptop and neither works. I tried also no user name and password and that
doesn't work which would make sense because it would be pretty poor security if
it did.
I also wonder what the difference is between the two versions of FileBrowser, I
bought the Professional bundle for $14.99 CAD (the regular version is $8.49,
and it installed two apps which Voiceover both reads as FileBrowser. I believe
one of them did not have an option to let me set up my OneDrive for Business
account from my Office 365 Small Business subscription, but the "professional"
version of the app which did allow me to set that up also has the option to set
up Dropbox and the NAS and so on, almost seems like you do need the
professional version of the app for OneDrive for Business but maybe it can also
do all the rest.
Too bad they didn't at least give them different accessibility labels so
Voiceover would read one as "FileBrowser" and the other as "FileBrowser Pro" or
"FileBrowser Business". Have to send them an email and suggest it since
visually my wife says both say FileBrowser, but the business/professional one
is sort of an orange colour and the regular one is blue in colour.

Regards,
Sieghard

I purchased FileBrowser and when I open it it does see my Windows 10 laptop and
my external Dlink network attached drive. It says touch to connect and when I
tap on either one it asks me for a user name and password. I tried putting in
my Windows Id which I use to login to my Windows 10 laptop, I have it set to
use a PIN rather than the password, but this does not work. As for my network
attached drive I don't even know what the user name and password would be, it
does not ask for one if I access it via Windows Explorer, it just shows up as a
drive and opens up as any other local hard drive.

Hi all, I would like to thank the person who put up the heads up about File
Browser, it works fantastically. I can not only access my dropbox files and
open them in other apps, but I can see all of the external hard drives on my
network, and play those files as well. I suspect I could even import them in
to other apps, though I haven't tried that yet! This is going to be extremely
useful for me as I have a group on whatsapp, called Beatle Talk. Many of the
groups that were on Roger are moving to whatsapp, and I am really starting to
like this app. I am able to upload
MP3 files to my group, and the members can hear good high quality sound.
If anyone is interested in joining my Beatle Talk group, let me know and I will
add you.

Have a good one:

Subject: filebrowser was: Re: Dropbox issue seems to be fixed

Hi everyone, A friend tipped me about the app filebrowser (not free but easy to
use and fully vo compatible). IU use that now to get access to my dropbox files
and for me it fixes the problem and is a nice alternative so i though I would
share it because it might help some other people out as well.
Have a nice weekend,
Greetings, Anouk,

2017-03-04 Thread Richard Turner
Thanks for sharing this Karla.
I've been in correspondence with them as well, but never got that explanation.
I've heard from at least three different people at DropBox; it is too bad they
do not talk to each other, or read the prior posts before responding.
But, if they finally have a fix for real, I'll be the first to thank them,
while still holding them accountable for the major screw up.
Not unlike the accountants at the Oscars, grin.
