All you have to do to prevent the "double tap to open" is to turn off hints.

I managed to get it to stop saying “Double tap to open” on the Home Page.

I can’t seem to locate an option for the Status Bar. I want to stop VO from
saying “Not Charging, when checking the battery status. I only want to know
for sure that it is charging when I plug it in.
Getting rid of the words “Status bar item would be nice, too.”

In settings, just go to accessibility / Voice Over, then swipe down to Speech
and double tap.
In there, swipe to pronunciation, and double tap.
This screen will contain a list of any pronunciation changes you have
previously made, and any new ones will be added to this list.
To make a new change, just double tap the add button. The screen that comes up
is where you enter the current word or phrase, and the new way you want it
pronounced.
When done, just double tap on the back button to go back to the list of changes
and your new change will be part of the list.

Hope this helps.

I was talking to a friend Stephen Giggar some of you might remember him from
the talks days. He said you might be able to customize what voice over does
and doesn't speak. I'm posting this example to show what can be done with the
Voiceover dictionary.
On the Status bar it says cellular 3 of 3 bars signal strength I wanted to
change this so I did this:
Put in in the phrase box

of 4 bars signal strength
Replacement bars
now when swiping across the status bar it says cellular 2 bars.
I also didn’t want Status bar item spoken so I did this
In the first box I put
Status bar item
Replacement just put in a space.

2022-01-02 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
I remember the Talks days well the user’s group and blindsea site.

There are a couple of things I would say, when selecting the string you want to
replace it’s often useful to use the Copy Last Spoken output to insert as your
string, saves some typing!

I wish under verbosity you could configure which apps and screen areas hints
are spoken in.

The dictionary is useful though I remember the Calendar in Symbian and creating
strings and replacements to have UK dates spoken more correctly.

6 tap add or add new not sure what it says.

Then follow the instructions below

On the Status bar it says cellular 4 of 4 bars signal strength I wanted to
change this so I did this:

Put in in the phrase box

Substitution

I also didn’t want Status bar item spoken so I did this

In the phrase box I put

Status bar item

substitution just put in a space.

Not charging substitute put a space.

Like, double tap to open.

In settings, just go to accessibility / Voice Over, then swipe down to
Speech and double tap.

In there, swipe to pronunciation, and double tap.

This screen will contain a list of any pronunciation changes you have
previously made, and any new ones will be added to this list.

To make a new change, just double tap the add button. The screen that comes
up is where you enter the current word or phrase, and the new way you want
it pronounced.

When done, just double tap on the back button to go back to the list of
changes and your new change will be part of the list.

Hope this helps.

I was talking to a friend Stephen Giggar some of you might remember him
from the talks days. He said you might be able to customize what voice over
does and doesn't speak. I'm posting this example to show what can be done
with the Voiceover dictionary.

On the Status bar it says cellular 3 of 3 bars signal strength I wanted to
change this so I did this:

Put in in the phrase box

  of 4 bars signal strength

  Replacement bars

now when swiping across the status bar it says cellular 2 bars.

I also didn’t want Status bar item spoken so I did this

In the first box I put

  Status bar item

Replacement just put in a space.

On the Status bar it says cellular 3 of 3 bars signal strength I wanted to
change this so I did this:

Put in in the phrase box

  of 4 bars signal strength

  Replacement bars

now when swiping across the status bar it says cellular 2 bars.

I also didn’t want Status bar item spoken so I did this

In the first box I put

  Status bar item

Replacement just put in a space.

RE: the power of Voiceover dictionary

2022-01-02 Thread Karen Poulakos
This is interesting. Where did you find the dictionary in order to do this? I
looked in the Voiceover settings, and couldn’t find any listing for a
dictionary.

Can you please describe the steps you used?

Thanks.

Subject: the power of Voiceover dictionary
