I want the iPhone 8+ as my next phone because I want some apps that are not
available on Android and I want a phone with the home button and finger
print sensor on it.

I'm also trying to decide the best time to upgrade my iPhone. I really want a 
model with a home button because I'm not a fan of the iPhone X interface 
changes and am not ready to relearn a bunch of gestures to make up for the 
missing home button. Be aware that there is a risk in waiting until the new 
models are released because you can't get all the capacity that was available 
when the model you're getting was first released. For example, if you go to the 
Apple Store and shop for an iPhone 7 today, the largest capacity you can get is 
128GB even though you could get a 256GB model when it was released. Just 
something to keep in mind.

In addition, if you wait to see what the new phones in September are,
and decide to get the 8 or 8 Plus, you can get them at a discount
since by then they will be last year's phones. That's probably what
I'm going to do; I want to hold on to Touch ID as long as possible,

At this point doing this is a waste of money. I have the 6S Plus and it's a 
great phone. I'm sure the 8 Plus is also a very nice phone, but given that we 
are almost at the end of April and in just over 4 months the new 2018 iPhones 
come out upgrading now will only be expensive and you may have buyer's remorse 
in September. Unless there is a major issue with your 6S Plus it will serve you 
well for these few months and if your battery is starting to be an issue just 
spend the $29 and set up an appointment at an Apple store to have it replaced, 
you probably get that $29 back if you resell it in the fall and can proof the 
phone had a new battery done by Apple just a few months ago.
