RE: Free iPhone Calculator with percent key
Hi Joseph, I am curious as to what you are looking for in a calculator, in my opinion the stock calculator couldn't be more accessible. This doesn't mean it couldn't be improved with respect to features, but it is 100% accessible. How would you say could the speed of inputting numbers be improved? Well, I just downloaded it and while the developer says it is fully accessible with Voiceover, I could not get the swipe right to calculate and swipe left to clear feature to work when Voiceover was running. When I put in a simple calculation, turned Voiceover off and then did a swipe right, it did work and when I turned Voiceover back on the result was displayed. I also noticed that Voiceover did not automatically speak the result after you press the = sign and you have to split tap or double tap each number to type it, touch typing seems to be not supported.. In short, I deleted it again because I really can't see any advantage in using it instead of the stock calculator which is also fully Voiceover accessible. In fact, I would say it is more so because I can touch type the numbers (things like +, divided by, multiplied by etc. still have to be double tapped) and with the calculator that is on the iPhone Voiceover also reads out the result as soon as I press =. Lastly, the stock calculator give me even more flexibility since I can turn the phone sideways to get a bunch more functions and while the percent sign is not on the basic portrait screen, it is there in landscape mode. One good thing is that by testing this I noticed again how one still has to split or doublke tap the symbols and I think I will send a message to Apple accessibility and suggest that they also work with touch typing. I don't see much of a reason why they shouldn't, after all, on the normal keyboard one used to have to double tap the delete, Shift and More Numbers buttons to activate them until Apple decided in iOS 5 that they should work as touch typing buttons which makes a lot more sense. Of course they also forgot to include the Delete button on the phone keypad to work as a touch typing key, but I probably wait and see if this is fixed in iOS 7 before I write. RE: Free iPhone Calculator with percent key
Hi Sieghard, I couldn't agree with you more. I also downloaded this app last night and played around with it for quite a while. My conclusions are very much the same as yours. It's a good thing that it was free. I wouldn't have wanted to pay anything for it as it is. The stock app is still far superior to this one. I actually left it on just in case the developer comes up with some brainy ideas to improve it. Hi, You are very right that multiplying by .01 is very good if you don't want to bother to turn your calculator but the fact remains that there is a percent key in landscape mode of the stock app for those who feel they need it. Re: Free iPhone Calculator with percent key
You asked about the difficulty in developing a simple and accessible app. I'll just say that while VO is really in most ways, a beautiful and easy screen reader to develop for, I'll add to that that the more customization you want to have, the less intuitive the iOS accessibility features can be to write for. Sometimes it's quite difficult to figure out how to get a control to behave like you need it to. -Even a standard one. -And I'm a VO user! Imagine how much research it may take for someone who is not… Make no mistake, the accessibility a developer gets for free by using the standard controls is awesome! but there is a learning curve in going further than that. So please do bear this in mind and be nice to your devs! ;) Thanks for the great post!
Dear Cara, I have had my iphone 5 for 5 months and learning new things everyday. A few days ago I installed a free ap related to the Tartan Army. No not a military group but the supporters of the Scotland national soccer team. The ap was completely innaccissible. Nothing would read on it at all. I wrote a standard email to the company who produce the ap. The reply was fairly prompt and they said that this ap was produced to see how many people would be interested in the ap and use it at Scotland soccer games. They said that if it goes well they will make the next ap accessible. I'm not sure if this was a quick answer or not. The draw to this ap is that when one attends the Scotland soccer matches one can get a token of some kind to show they have been to that match. This can then be used to purchase items relating to the Scotland team. I felt that by being blind we were left out of that option. They did say that I can get these points at a later date. Probably through sighted help. It is worth contacting the developer and I will keep in contact with this developer to see if they do keep there word. Take care and thanks for a brilliant list. RE: Letting Apple know about double tapped keys -was- Re: Free iPhone Calculator with percent key
Hi Cara, Yes, I actually did write to them after I posted my message since I thought about it and came to the same conclusion. iOS 7 is still in Beta and making the Delete key on the phone pad a touch typing key is probably not such a big deal that they couldn't change it between now and the final release should it not have been changed already. I guess if they have a reason why it is the way it is then maybe they enlighten me about it.
