Hello Joseph, Richard's correct here. A Microsoft account can be created with
your existing email address if that's what the user desires. It's not necessary
to create an outlook.com http://outlook.com/ or live.com http://live.com/
address if you're happy with the email service you have.

Hi Grant and all,

There is a command in iOS 8 for hearing text formatting on a braille display -

Best,

Microsoft Word is unfortunately not that accessible beyond basic text

Hello Joseph, Richard's correct here. A Microsoft account can be created
with your existing email address if that's what the user desires. It's not
necessary to create an outlook.com http://outlook.com/ or live.com
http://live.com/ address if you're happy with the email service you have.

You will only get basic features with the free apps, but this might be

The apps are not completely accessible as there is no way to return the

If one is really interested in this type of access, please go through the
process of installing before asking questions as this will focus your

Re: Microsoft Word on the iPhone with VoiceOver

2014-11-09 Thread Grant Hardy
The fact that text formatting is not indicated in speech or Braille is a
VoiceOver limitation. In Mac OS X, there is a VoiceOver command to speak the
text attributes at your current cursor location, and there are also other
commands involving text attributes built into VoiceOver. iOS doesn't support
any of this functionality yet, which is a limitation for other apps as well as
Microsot Word.

That said, it's obvious that Microsoft is beginning to give thought to the
accessibility of its software for iOS, and I really appreciate that. Microsoft
Word is unfortunately not that accessible beyond basic text editing, in my
experience. For example, there is no way I have found with VO to work with
tables, as you can in Apple's Pages app. However, the other apps in the Office
suite are definitely worth a look. Excel seems to be the most accessible app,
though I haven't played with it extensively. PowerPoint also seems to have some
accessibility built in both for presenting slide shows and editing
presentations; however, in my experience it simply crashes too much to be
usable. This is on an iPhone 5S with iOS 8.1.

wouldn't describe it as accessible.

Re: Microsoft Word on the iPhone with VoiceOver

2014-11-08 Thread Christopher Chaltain
This is true, but the same can be said for any main stream computer
application. I still remember the time when GUI's were considered to be
an insurmountable barrier to the blind since they were designed for the
sighted who could scan the screen and easily find an icon with the
mouse. Ditto when people just assumed the touch screen would never be
usable by the blind. Apple did design and operating system and screen
reader that demonstrated the blind could use a touch screen and could
use it very efficiently.

A small form factor may not lend itself to word processing as much as a
desktop form factor does, but I don't see why this would be any
different for the blind than it is for the sighted. In fact, I think the
small form factor may force a cleaner less cluttered interface which may
even mean a more even playing field for the blind, as we see with so
many other mobile apps already.

I'm pretty confident there are some smart software engineers out there
who will come up with some pretty innovative ideas on how to make these
office suites accessible to the blind on the mobile form factor, just as
they figured out how the blind could use the GUI and the touch screen. I
for one am not going to just assume that it's an impossible task and
we'll be left out of efficiently using these apps on our smart phones
and tablets.

2014-11-08 Thread Merv Keck
As someone who depends daily on Word and Excel 2013 or 365 since I have the
yearly subscription, I am hoping that Microsoft continues to develop these
apps with V O as so far I am enjoying having both of them on my 5S. I have
not had a chance to use PowerPoint as of yet but I am hoping that will also
be a success.

And I go back to 1984 with the Apple 2E and I can remember a year or so
later when the first mouse driven word processor came out. I paid $150 for
my first mouse and had to install a card inside the machine just to use the
mouse. Most reviewers came right out and said no one in their right minds
would use a word processor that would cause someone to take their hands off
of the keyboard in order to click a mouse, laughs! Of course that was ten
years before bill Gates took over the world. Or the world ended I'm not
quite sure yet.

Richard,

I was just playing with a document in the Word app and I had lines available
for navigation in my rotor. I selected it and it seemed to work as expected.
I also tried the Reflow option which was the next to last button on the
right of the top line menu and liked the way reading worked in this view.
It's opposite is Print layout view I believe.

I've played a little more with Word on the iPhone.

It seems to be pretty accessible with Word and syncs with Dropbox and
OneDrive.

My one big complaint is that you cannot navigate by lines. In the rotor,
you have characters, words, headings.

This is whether you are in edit mode or not. And with or without a
Bluetooth keyboard.

You can just use the up and down arrow keys if you are on a Bluetooth
keyboard, but I have not spent enough time with it to know if there is a
point when you arrow yourself out of the edit field.

This seems like a good start to having better Word access on the go.

My other complaint is that when creating a new document, if you pick the
take notes template, there is a lot of non-English words that you cannot
delete, which makes it pretty much useless.

The blank document is fine. I have not tried the other templates they
offer.

Since the basic features are free, I encourage folks to give it a try.

You do have to have or create a free Microsoft account to use the app. You
can create one from within the app if you don't have one.

Also, if you simply search for Word in the app store, it is the first
result.

This seems like a good start to having better Word access on the go.

My other complaint is that when creating a new document, if you pick the take
notes template, there is a lot of non-English words that you cannot delete,
which makes it pretty much useless.

The blank document is fine. I have not tried the other templates they offer.

Since the basic features are free, I encourage folks to give it a try.
You do have to have or create a free Microsoft account to use the app. You
can create one from within the app if you don’t have one.

Also, if you simply search for “Word” in the app store, it is the first
 result.

So, when this was only available for the Ipad you had to have a
Live365 subscription to edit documents. Is this no longer required? My
employer has a Live365 account but it only allows us to use the nasty
web ersions of Office so was no good to me for the Ipad version of
word.

 Richard,

I was just playing with a document in the Word app and I had lines
available for navigation in my rotor. I selected it and it seemed to work
as expected. I also tried the Reflow option which was the next to last
button on the right of the top line menu and liked the way reading worked
in this view. It's opposite is Print layout view I believe.

I've played a little more with Word on the iPhone.
It seems to be pretty accessible with Word and syncs with Dropbox and
 OneDrive.
My one big complaint is that you cannot navigate by lines. In the rotor,
 you have characters, words, headings...
This is whether you are in edit mode or not. And with or without a
 Bluetooth keyboard.
You can just use the up and down arrow keys if you are on a Bluetooth
keyboard, but I have not spent enough time with it to know if there is a

To run:
Microsoft Word on the App Store on iTunes
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-word/id586447913?mt=8

You will need a Microsoft related account such as an email address which
ends with @live.com or @outlook.com

You will be installing the full app on your iOS device which means you will
not need to visit a website or Wi-Fi to use these apps.

When installing the app you will begin with a brief demo.

You will be asked to enter your email address then your password.

Your app will now be setup.

You can purchase a subscription but it is not necessary as you can go into
the menus and import from OneDrive via Wi-Fi etc.

You will only get basic features with the free apps, but this might be
enough for those on the go who aren't looking to torture themselves by
trying to author their book using this type of device.

The apps are not completely accessible as there is no way to return the app
to it's normal view once one modifies the app to show in the full view.

If one is really interested in this type of access, please go through the
process of installing before asking questions as this will focus your
questions and eliminate easy questions which result in many, many
unnecessary replies. (Using nice tone).

The problem might be one of users asking too much of the form factor. Small
apps such as what Microsoft is offering on the iPhone and such are not meant
to be full Microsoft Office replacements no matter how hard blind people try
to make them behave in this manner. these small apps might result in a more
productive experience for the sighted user, but this is because the iPhone
and such devices are designed for the sighted world, so when you read about
these apps anywhere other than these blind-centric lists, the apps boast
lots because sighted people can for the most part be much more productive
not having to swipe their fingers to the bone trying to find each icon or
control on the screen--they just scan the screen with their eyes and tap.
Smile.

What do you feel can be done to improve the current accessibility or ease of
use?

do basic editing without subscribing but I don't really think it's
very useable yet frankly. Still pretty disappointing sadly.

You will need a Microsoft related account such as an email address which
 ends with @live.com or @outlook.com

You will be installing the full app on your iOS device which means you
 will
not need to visit a website or Wi-Fi to use these apps.

When installing the app you will begin with a brief demo.

You will be asked to enter your email address then your password.

Your app will now be setup.

You can purchase a subscription but it is not necessary as you can go
 into
the menus and import from OneDrive via Wi-Fi etc.

You will only get basic features with the free apps, but this might be
enough for those on the go who aren't looking to torture themselves by
trying to author their book using this type of device.

The apps are not completely accessible as there is no way to return the
 app
to it's normal view once one modifies the app to show in the full view.

If one is really interested in this type of access, please go through the
process of installing before asking questions as this will focus your
questions and eliminate easy questions which result in many, many
 unnecessary replies. (Using nice tone).

If you do use any of the formatting, it is not indicated in speech.
And you can only move by characters, words or headings. Not lines. I
agree totally that we'll never get the same experience as sighted
users, my co-workers love their Word for Ipad. But having full
navigation and access to the results of formatting would make a
difference at least. I would just be very caucious to describe it as
accessible. It may be all we can get given the OS etc. but I just
wouldn't describe it as accessible.

You can just use the up and down arrow keys if you are on a Bluetooth
keyboard, but I have not spent enough time with it to know if there is a
point when you arrow yourself out of the edit field.

You can create one from within the app if you don't have one.

Also, if you simply search for Word in the app store, it is the first
result.

Richard
