SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A major flaw in Apple Inc software for mobile
devices could allow hackers to intercept email and other communications that
 are

meant to be encrypted, the company said on Friday, and experts said Mac
 computers were even more exposed.

If attackers have access to a mobile user's network, such as by sharing the
same unsecured wireless service offered by a restaurant, they could see or
 alter

exchanges between the user and protected sites such as Gmail and Facebook.
Governments with access to telecom carrier data could do the same.

It's as bad as you could imagine, that's all I can say, said Johns Hopkins
 University cryptography professor Matthew Green.

Apple did not say when or how it learned about the flaw in the way iOS
handles sessions in what are known as secure sockets layer or transport
 layer security,

nor did it say whether the flaw was being exploited.

But a statement on its support website was blunt: The software failed to
validate the authenticity of the connection.

Apple released software patches and an update for the current version of iOS
for iPhone 4 and later, 5th-generation iPod touches, and iPad 2 and later.

Without the fix, a hacker could impersonate a protected site and sit in the
middle as email or financial data goes between the user and the real site,
 Green

 said.

After analyzing the patch, several security researchers said the same flaw
existed in current versions of Mac OSX, running Apple laptop and desktop
 computers.

No patch is available yet for that operating system, though one is expected
 soon.

Because spies and hackers will also be studying the patch, they could
develop programs to take advantage of the flaw within days or even hours.

The issue is a fundamental bug in Apple's SSL implementation, said Dmitri
Alperovich, chief technology officer at security firm CrowdStrike Inc. Adam

Langley, a senior engineer at Google, agreed with CrowdStrike that OS X was
 at risk.

Apple did not reply to requests for comment. The flaw appears to be in the
way that well-understood protocols were implemented, an embarrassing lapse
 for

a company of Apple's stature and technical prowess.

The company was recently stung by leaked intelligence documents claiming
that authorities had 100 percent success rate in breaking into iPhones.

Friday's news suggests that enterprising hackers could have had great
success as well if they knew of the flaw.

Re: iOS7.0.6

2014-02-22 Thread Pablo Morales

Ha, why since IOs 7, any other update has been oriented to this area?

I remember when we have IOs 4, 5 that the voice over improvements always
comes with the IOs updates. Apple not always fixed the voice over problems,
but they fixed some of them. But since IOs 7, anyone has been fixed.

Now with the story of security, vulnerability, the time is passing; we are
almost in March, almost half year, since IOs 7 appeared, and, nothing.

I hope, and again, I hope that with IOs 7.1, apple will do something with
the problems with voice over.

wise idea to go ahead and download it? I just checked and I also have the
update ios7.06 on my pphone ready to download if I want. Right now I'm

Re: iOS7.0.6

2014-02-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain

I'm not sure what you're saying in your message.

If you're asking if there have been any fixes to bugs in IOS involving
voiceOver and accessibility since IOS 7.0 was released then the answer
is definitely yes. IOS 7.0.3 included quite a few bug fixes and several
dealing with VoiceOver and accessibility, most notably is probably the
sensitivity bug that was addressed. You can read more about what was
contained in IOS 7.0.3 at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1691

Of course, not every bug has been addressed, but I'm not sure what bugs
you're referring to. I'm using IOS 7.0.6 just fine right now, and
although there are a few things I'd like to see addressed, I'll keep
being a satisfied iPhone user even if those issues don't get addressed.
Note that being a satisfied iPhone user doesn't mean I don't report bugs
I find to Apple.

Sounds like you're implying that the dot releases have always addressed
VoiceOver bugs in the past, but I downloaded quite a few dot releases
for IOS 5 and IOS 6 that didn't include anything but security fixes and
didn't address any VoiceOver bugs.

I'm also not sure what you're saying about security fixes. Almost all of
the dot releases, including IOS 7.0.6, are driven by security fixes that
Apple finds or is made aware of and needs to get into the field as soon
as possible. I'm surprised that there's a 7.0.6 at all, with IOS 7.1 on
the horizon. Apple must have felt that this bug is pretty serious to
spend the ffort rolling out a dot release just for it rather than just
waiting for IOS 7.1. I'm not surprised at all though that it just
contains this one security vulnerability. I'm sure Apple doesn't want to
take even more resources away from 7.1 to fix and test bugs in 7.0.6
that it feels can wait until 7.1 hits the market.

Yeah, some bugs related to VoiceOver and accessibility have been fixed
in the various dot releases leading up to IOS 7.0.6. There are still
bugs though. IOS 7.1 is on the horizon though and will probably contain

IMHO, might be best to ask about OSX on a Mac list where it's more on topic.

Hi,

As a matter of fact the LI battery should be charged when between 40 to 50%
of its charge. We don't have to bring it down like we did the Ni-Cad.
Several tests I have read recommend around 40% as being a good point to

Re: iOS7.0.6

2014-02-21 Thread Christopher Chaltain
What I generally read is that lithium ion batteries prefer shallow
recharges, in other words, when it gets down to about 50% bring it back
up to 80% or 90% and then start letting it run the battery back down to
around 50% again. Of course, batteries are meant to be used, so don't
sweat it if you let it run down further than that or take it all the way
back up to fully charged at 100%. Lithium ion batteries like to be used
and like to be recharged.

Hi,

I think that will be just fine. If I was a betting man, I would say the
majority of people don't wait for their device to die before charging it.

Hi all
would it be safe to charge the iPad mini mid cycle? The reason is I cannot

IOS 7.0.5 was only made available in a few regions, and it was only for
a few models. I looked it up when it was discussed on this list, so you
shouldn't have any trouble googling for more information, if you're
still interested.

Hello,

For those who are living in china and the EU, iOS 7.0.5 was released I believe
late last month or early this one. I guess that's why Apple is calling this
release 7.0.6
