RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?
I'm with Chuck about spending the necessary learning and practice time with FlickType. I use it in portrait mode with only an index finger but I can type significantly faster with it. Hello, I use the FlickType keyboard about 99% of the time. Usually, the only time I use the iOS keyboard is when I am using financial apps, because I prefer the number keyboard and I have to enter a lot of abbreviations. I tried the slide to type keyboard. With practice I am sure I could get faster, however this keyboard I can only type with one finger at a time, but with the flicktype keyboard I hold my iPhone in landscape mode between my hands and type with my thumbs. I can actually type faster this way than on a physical keyboard. That being said, I feel I should admit that I am terrible at typing and spelling. For those having trouble with FlickType I highly suggest that you read the user guide. The keyboard is easy to use, but there are some gestures that make typing much easier. RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?
Hi Sieghard, I'm a huge fan of FlickType but I use it in full screen mode and access it by selecting it when typing a text or email. I use the native iOS on screen keyboard for other few word text input such as searching, etc. It's great that we have alternatives. You're right that FlickType does take practice to get good with it and learn its gestures for accessing numbers and symbols but I find that practice was well worth the effort since I can type much faster with FlickType than with any other on screen option I've tried. I haven't practiced with slide to type and found it a bit offputting when I first upgraded to iOS 13.x so I turned it off. I know Flicktype officianiados may disagree, but what I mean is that I don't think somebody who can type fairly confidently with Flicktype for most regular words is able to use it for more complex entry of numbers, symbols and so on without an incredible amount of practice. I actually wonder if people like Chuck who seem to be very proficient with Flicktype never switch to the iOS default keyboard. For me to find Flicktype truly useful it would have to be similar to slide to type, something I can use the normal way, but if I have a longer stretch of text to type all it would take is a small gesture and I can start tapping away like Flicktype intends me to do. For me dictation is still what I always default to if it involves longer text and I'm not in a public place or using a Bluetooth keyboard. Thanks to using a Logitech K780 at home and the Logitech G613 at work quickly switching to my iPhone if I'm in a text message, Facebook Messenger or email entry field is very easy and fast. Having said all this, I occasionally use slide to type, i.e. I don't have it disabled, because it actually does work quite well, but just as with Flicktype it also requires a bit of practice. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Alex Stone Sent: Saturday, February 1, 2020 10:34 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type? One frustration I had with Flicktype was with non-English words. Be it pronouns or if I simply wanted to type in Spanish or maybe practice with my wife in German. Building up a personal dictionary of entries was just too tedious. Thank you very much for that. I will have to try it. I liked touch typing mode. Hearing so many letters is like hearing numbers while you are trying to dial one, or remember one. RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?
With slide to type, if you haven't disabled it, you find the first letter of a word and hold your finger there for a moment. You then hear a little triple tone which indicates slide to type is active, then you very quickly slide your finger (without ever lifting it up) to each letter of the word you want to type. Just as with Flicktype it is not important if you are exactly on the letter, just slide to the approximate place of the letter ad on to the next. At some point iOS will guess what word you want and speak it, at this point you can lift your finger and the word will be inserted. You should go to www.Applevis.com and do a search for "Slide to Type" and find the tutorial Thomas made. If you have a word like "tomorrow" where you have a double letter, you simply slide to the "r" and then on to the "o", iOS will guess that a double letter is required. You don't even have to insert a space, if you type a word using Slide to Type, after you lift your finger you can put it back down, find the first letter of the next word, hold and start sliding again, the space is automatically inserted. hold your finger -Original Message- From: 'jan howells' via VIPhone Sent: Sunday, February 2, 2020 1:04 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type? RE: how does flick type compared to apples slide to type?
Keith, Flicktype doesn't involve sliding. You just tap approximately where you think the letters are and flick right and if that isn't the word you wanted, flick down to see what other suggestions it has. Thomas donville has done a good podcast on the slide-to-type for VoiceOver users. I seem to always revert back to using mBraille as my third party keyboard or my hardware Bluetooth keyboard when I want to type more than a few words. .
