2014-02-05 Thread Sean Paul
Yes, that's a good article. However, I'll even go more simple than that. If you
have a dynamic mic, you must get directly in to the mic, with in 6-10 inches of
it. Speaking directly in to it. If you get off to the sides, above, below. The
sound is lost or greatly reduced. In a condenser mic, I can sit back in my
chair speak in or should we say, speak towards the mic. The mic will pick up
a wider range of sound from all sides.

Ari, on a more practical side, you can likely get a lot closer to a dynamic
microphone than you can to a condenser thus cutting down on the background
noise. And if you get a cardioid microphone, rather than an omni directional
one, this will help even further.

Sandy, I have not seen anything like this, but if I run across anything, I will
let you and the list know. If you are in the States, you might check
http://www.soundprofessionals.com

They sell a lot of this kind of microphone and may well have something for the
iPhone. Whether they would have anything for an older phone, I don’t know, but
it might be worth a check.

keeping phone calls and other things from interrupting my recording on an app

2014-02-04 Thread Neal Ewers
I am using Zoom Handy recorder to record. When I am using this app and
receive a phone call, the file I am recording ends. What's the easiest way
to temporarily stop phone calls and other pushed information? I tried using
the mute button on the phone and while the call does not ring, the app stops
just the same.

Thanks much.

OK Neal, That would be airplane mode. Duh! I should have thought of this

Re: keeping phone calls and other things from interrupting my recording on an app

2014-02-04 Thread Sean Paul
Neal:
I use my iPhone to record most all interviews that I do in the field as a news
reporter. Just before I start my interview, I put the phone in airplane mode
which prevents calls as well as other push notifications which may come from
internet based apps from making their presents felt... I'll also do the same
with my iPad if I'm using my ATR2100 hooked up through the camera connector.
Yes, my iPad is a YFi model only, but, I don't want things making noise
either interupting my thoughts, my interview or recording.

New iPhone Mike and handy recorder app. was keeping phone calls and other things from interrupting my recording on an app

2014-02-04 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, there is not only a Zoom app, but a new zoom microphone that uses the
lightning plug on the iDevice.

The link to a demo I heard by Patrick Perdue is below, followed by my
thoughts on the app.

http://borris.me/audio/IQ5.mp3

Pros.

Easy to start recording.

Records in wav 44.1, 16 bit

Works with the iPhone microphone, but is very full featured to work with the
many settings on the microphone mentioned above.

Cons. Some of the buttons are not labeled, but you can re-label them.

Only shares with Sound Cloud. Otherwise you have to get the files off of
iTunes.

I will be getting my microphone tomorrow and may put up some short samples
not covered in Patrick's very nice demo.

Enjoy.

, a couple downsides to that mic. The price for starters the fact that it's
a condenser mic not a dynamic mic... That's what I love so much about my Audio
Technica ATR-2100 mic, it is a dynamic mic which is much better for voice work.

Re: New iPhone Mike and handy recorder app. was keeping phone calls and other things from interrupting my recording on an app

2014-02-04 Thread Gmail
I've thought about getting a mic to use with my iPhone 4S. I'd be using it
mostly for voice recordings, but other background noise might be present. So,
my question is, what's the difference between a condenser mic and a dynamic mic?

Thanks,
Ari

Otherwise you have to get the files off of
 iTunes.

I will be getting my microphone tomorrow and may put up some short samples
not covered in Patrick’s very nice demo.

 Enjoy.

Can you tell us what you like about this app, over others, such as the native
recorder app or alternatives? I used a freestanding Zoom recorder several
years before my iPhone, and really liked it. My recording needs aren’t that
sophisticated, though. I wasn’t aware there was a Zoom app.

 Thanks in advance. Keith

I am using Zoom Handy recorder to record. When I am using this app and
receive a phone call, the file I am recording ends. What’s the easiest way to
temporarily stop phone calls and other pushed information? I tried using the
mute button on the phone and while the call does not ring, the app stops just
 the same.

 Thanks much.

Ari, here is a very simple definition. People have written books on this
subject so one can go quite deep, but I think this will give you a start.

RE: New iPhone Mike and handy recorder app. was keeping phone calls and other things from interrupting my recording on an app

2014-02-04 Thread Neal Ewers
Ari, on a more practical side, you can likely get a lot closer to a dynamic
microphone than you can to a condenser thus cutting down on the background
noise. And if you get a cardioid microphone, rather than an omni directional
one, this will help even further.
