RE: recovery mode
Here is what Apple says: • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the connect to iTunes screen. As Malcolm pointed out, the side button is… well, the button on the side which is the power/sleep button. Of course not being able to see the Connect to iTunes screen means it's a bit of guesswork, but I think 10 or 12 seconds should do it. Of course you do have to make sure your phone is connected to the computer and that iTunes is open. Here is the first part of that Apple help article: Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again 1. Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes . 2. If iTunes is already open, close it. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help. 3. While your device is connected, force restart it with these steps, but don't release the buttons when you see the Apple logo, wait until the connect to iTunes screen appears: This is where the steps were listed for how to do this on an iPhone 8 or later, the iPhone 7 (volume down and side button) or the iPhone 6S or earlier. Just out of curiocity, why do you need recovery mode, is your iPhone completely stuck? DFU stands for device firmware update. When in DFu mode, your phone will work with iTunes, so you can load new firmware, but IOS is not running on the phone. RE: Using iTunes to Upgrade a Phone in Recovery Mode
This happened to me last week because good ol Microsoft pushed updates down and the computer rebooted in the middle of the phone's backup process. I followed the restore process and all was well. Good thing Microsoft isn't here in my town! lol. Needless to say, I've turned off automatic updates. Tonight, we started the upgrade process from within iTunes but at some point the phone was no longer seen by iTunes which presented a message that the phone was in recovery mode and would have to be restored before anything else could be done. The phone was absolutely silent and she was unable to determine if it was even powered on. Disconnecting it from the USB cable and reconnecting it did cause the computer to chirp so it was seeing the iPhone. But when iTunes was restarted, she got the message again about the phone being in recovery mode requiring a restore in order to proceed. None of the usual restore from backup options were available under the iTunes Summary tab and the only option was to select the Restore button. When this was selected, the next thing spoken by JAWS was that restoring would erase all of the phone's content and reset it to factory defaults. This caused us great concern and she decided to take her phone and laptop to the Apple Store to get their help restoring her phone. I suspect that once the phone is restored, the option will become available in iTunes to restore from the computer backup we made yesterday. However, the reason we didn't proceed was we weren't sure how she would be able to respond with the phone when the upgrade shifted to it as it always does if she didn't have VoiceOver on. I'm trying to learn from this experience from anyone who might have gone this route before so I'll know if the process can be completed by someone without sighted assistance in this circumstance. Does it give you an option to start VoiceOver when a restore to factory defaults is done? Can VoiceOver be turned on using iTunes as part of the restore process? Finally, does anyone have any ideas why the phone went into recovery mode? I'm confident that she'll get her phone upgraded and restored from the manual encrypted backup made to her cmputer but I'm really confused as to why her phone was put into recovery mode as part of our upgrade experience since I believe we did everything exactly as I did on my phone a few days ago. Thanks for any comments I can learn from and use if I ever encounter this again. Alan Lemly -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Using iTunes to Upgrade a Phone in Recovery Mode
I was trying to help a friend upgrade her phone using iTunes. We first made sure she was on the latest version of iTunes (11.1.5) and then made an encrypted backup to her computer. Finally, we chose to download the iOS 7.1 to her computer so it would be available in case the Apple servers were busy when we got to the upgrade the next day. Re: Using iTunes to Upgrade a Phone in Recovery Mode
Hi Alan, occasionally, these upgrades will fail. It's hard to know specifically why it did in this case. But if you restore when in recovery mode, you'll have a clean iPHone, and you can then restore from the iTunes backup. You could also do triple click home on the start screen of the iPhone to get VoiceOver going in the event that you needed to restore from iCloud. But since you did the iTunes backup, there's no need to enable VoiceOver at the beginning. Doing the restore puts the phone into the exact state it was when the backup was taken, and that includes turning VoiceOver on. So yes, it's a totally accessible process. Jonathan. Re: Iphone 4s in recovery mode when trying to update to ios 7.03
When you restore to factory settings it will ask for a user name and password for both the ICloud and ITunes. By entering these you will get back your data. Mine did that when I went to IOS 7, and I didn't lose a thing. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. iPhone Update: Recovery Mode?
Hey guys. Updating my iPhone. Or, trying to. How long does it normally take? I'm updating it while it's connected to my computer, charging, and iTunes was saying something like iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore your iPhone before it can be used again with iTunes. Any idea what this means? I have an iPhone 4S. Si -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. iPod touch stuck in recovery mode
Hi guys, First I'll apologise for not posting anything for a long time, no excuse except work and laziness. :). Now for my question. I have an iPod touch 5th gen 32 gig, I plugged it in to my mac the other day to update a few things, and finally get around to installing IOS 6.2. wen I started the software update, iTunes informed me that iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode I restored the iPod, and now it's stuck in a recovery mode loop. I've tried every kind of reset there is, but every time I try to do a restore to get it up and running again, it starts to download the upgrade, but part way through the download it just says iTunes has detected a iPod in recovery mode. Does anyone have any other ideas I can try? I'm about an hour and a half away from an apple store, so taking it in isn't an option. Thanks in advance for any help.
