RE: recovery mode

2018-11-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Here is what Apple says:
• On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side and Volume Down
buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the connect to iTunes
screen.
As Malcolm pointed out, the side button is… well, the button on the side which
is the power/sleep button.
Of course not being able to see the Connect to iTunes screen means it's a bit
of guesswork, but I think 10 or 12 seconds should do it.
Of course you do have to make sure your phone is connected to the computer and
that iTunes is open.
Here is the first part of that Apple help article:
Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again
1. Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes .
2. If iTunes is already open, close it. Connect your device to your computer
and open iTunes.
If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend or go to an Apple Retail
Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.
3. While your device is connected, force restart it with these steps, but don't
release the buttons when you see the Apple logo, wait until the connect to
iTunes screen appears:
This is where the steps were listed for how to do this on an iPhone 8 or later,
the iPhone 7 (volume down and side button) or the iPhone 6S or earlier.
Just out of curiocity, why do you need recovery mode, is your iPhone completely
stuck?

Regards,
Sieghard

DFU stands for device firmware update. When in DFu mode, your phone will
work with iTunes, so you can load new firmware, but IOS is not running

Since the Home button on iPhone 7 isn’t a mechanical button anymore, and
is instead a capacitive solid-state button controlled by software, it’s
no surprise that performing hard resets, entering recovery, and entering
into DFU mode no longer works the same way on iPhone 7.

The good news is that you’ll only need to adopt a new button combination
to perform each of these tasks. Have a look at our full video
walkthrough, and we’ll show you how.

How to force restart iPhone 7

To force restart (hard reset) the iPhone 7, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake button + Volume Down button for 10 seconds. Because of the
Home button change, it’s been replaced by the Volume Down button during
the process.

The side-effect to this method is that the Volume HUD appears on screen
each time you wish to force restart the iPhone 7. Not a big deal, but
not as “clean-looking” as in the past.

How to get into Recovery Mode on iPhone 7

*Step 1:* Connect your iPhone 7 to your Mac or PC with a Lightning to
USB cable.

*Step 2:* Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down
button until the screen turns off. Continue holding the Sleep/Wake
button + Volume Down button, even after you see the Apple logo appear.

*Step 4:* Release the Sleep/Wake + Volume Down button once you see the
Connect to iTunes message appear on the iPhone 7’s screen.

*Step 5:* Launch iTunes, and you should see a message stating that
/“There is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or
restored.”/

Getting into DFU mode, as you can probably guess, also requires a change.

*Step 1:* Connect your iPhone 7 to your Mac or PC with a Lightning to
USB cable.

*Step 2:* Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down
button simultaneously for 10 seconds.

*Step 3:* Release the Sleep/Wake button while continuing to hold the
Volume Down button for 10 additional seconds. Unlike Recovery Mode,
which presents a Connect to iTunes message on the screen, the iPhone 7’s
screen will remain blank while in DFU mode.

*Step 4:* Launch iTunes, and you should see a message stating that
/“iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this
iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”/

/The Volume Down button takes on an additional role on iPhone 7/

How to exit Recovery mode or DFU mode on iPhone 7

As long as there are no issues with your iPhone, getting out of Recovery
Mode or DFU Mode is easy.

*Step 1:* Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down
button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo appear (or the
connect to iTunes message disappear when in Recovery Mode). You iPhone
should boot back to the Lock screen.

Although there is no longer a mechanical Home button on the latest
iPhone, it’s still relatively easy to force restart, enter Recovery
Mode, and enter DFU mode by strategically wielding the Volume Down
button + Sleep/Wake button combination.

Hi, again. My message bounced back to me earlier today. What is DFU mode? I'm
simply not familiar with what that is. All the best, Brian

Since the Home button on iPhone 7 isn’t a mechanical button anymore,
and is instead a capacitive solid-state button controlled by software,
it’s no surprise that performing hard resets, entering recovery, and
entering into DFU mode no longer works the same way on iPhone 7.

The good news is that you’ll only need to adopt a new button
combination to perform each of these tasks. Have a look at our full
video walkthrough, and we’ll show you how.

How to force restart iPhone 7

To force restart (hard reset) the iPhone 7, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake button + Volume Down button for 10 seconds. Because of the
Home button change, it’s been replaced by the Volume Down button
during the process.

The side-effect to this method is that the Volume HUD appears on
screen each time you wish to force restart the iPhone 7. Not a big
deal, but not as “clean-looking” as in the past.

*Step 5:* Launch iTunes, and you should see a message stating that
/“There is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or
restored.”/

How to get into DFU mode on iPhone 7

Getting into DFU mode, as you can probably guess, also requires a change.

*Step 1:* Connect your iPhone 7 to your Mac or PC with a Lightning to
USB cable.

*Step 2:* Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down
button simultaneously for 10 seconds.

*Step 3:* Release the Sleep/Wake button while continuing to hold the
Volume Down button for 10 additional seconds. Unlike Recovery Mode,
which presents a Connect to iTunes message on the screen, the iPhone
7’s screen will remain blank while in DFU mode.

*Step 4:* Launch iTunes, and you should see a message stating that
/“iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore
this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”/

/The Volume Down button takes on an additional role on iPhone 7/

How to exit Recovery mode or DFU mode on iPhone 7

As long as there are no issues with your iPhone, getting out of
Recovery Mode or DFU Mode is easy.

RE: Using iTunes to Upgrade a Phone in Recovery Mode

2014-03-17 Thread DJ
This happened to me last week because good ol Microsoft pushed updates down
and the computer rebooted in the middle of the phone's backup process. I
followed the restore process and all was well. Good thing Microsoft isn't
here in my town! lol.

Needless to say, I've turned off automatic updates.

hello Alan. First off, yes it's possible to get speech on from iTunes.
Second, if the iPhone has been backed up, then it's safe to proceed with
the update even if it gives you the warning that the world will end and
the phone will be erased back to factory defaults.

As to what causes this, it's really a number of things. I've seen this
when upgrading jailbroken phones to a new software version, or when
upgrading a phone and it skips iOS versions.

Good luck.

servers were busy when we got to the upgrade the next day.

Tonight, we started the upgrade process from within iTunes but at some
point the phone was no longer seen by iTunes which presented a message
that the phone was in recovery mode and would have to be restored before
anything else could be done. The phone was absolutely silent and she was
unable to determine if it was even powered on. Disconnecting it from the
USB cable and reconnecting it did cause the computer to chirp so it was
seeing the iPhone. But when iTunes was restarted, she got the message
again about the phone being in recovery mode requiring a restore in
order to proceed. None of the usual restore from backup options were
available under the iTunes Summary tab and the only option was to select
the Restore button. When this was selected, the next thing spoken by
JAWS was that restoring would erase all of the phone's content and reset
it to factory defaults. This caused us great concern and she decided to
take her phone and laptop to the Apple Store to get their help restoring
 her phone.

I suspect that once the phone is restored, the option will become
available in iTunes to restore from the computer backup we made
yesterday. However, the reason we didn't proceed was we weren't sure how
she would be able to respond with the phone when the upgrade shifted to
it as it always does if she didn't have VoiceOver on. I'm trying to
learn from this experience from anyone who might have gone this route
before so I'll know if the process can be completed by someone without
sighted assistance in this circumstance. Does it give you an option to
start VoiceOver when a restore to factory defaults is done? Can
VoiceOver be turned on using iTunes as part of the restore process?
Finally, does anyone have any ideas why the phone went into recovery mode?

I'm confident that she'll get her phone upgraded and restored from the
manual encrypted backup made to her cmputer but I'm really confused as
to why her phone was put into recovery mode as part of our upgrade
experience since I believe we did everything exactly as I did on my
 phone a few days ago.

Thanks for any comments I can learn from and use if I ever encounter
 this again.

Thanks for any comments I can learn from and use if I ever encounter
 this again.

Mostly, Microsoft lets you do that too. But yes, that can be super frustrating.

Re: Using iTunes to Upgrade a Phone in Recovery Mode

2014-03-13 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Alan, occasionally, these upgrades will fail. It's hard to know specifically
why it did in this case.
But if you restore when in recovery mode, you'll have a clean iPHone, and you
can then restore from the iTunes backup. You could also do triple click home on
the start screen of the iPhone to get VoiceOver going in the event that you
needed to restore from iCloud. But since you did the iTunes backup, there's no
need to enable VoiceOver at the beginning. Doing the restore puts the phone
into the exact state it was when the backup was taken, and that includes
turning VoiceOver on. So yes, it's a totally accessible process.

restore from your backup and you will get everything back like it never
happened. Your VO should start by itself like it did for me but, if it

So connect your phone to ITunes and it will recognize that it needs to be
restored and prompt you. When finished if you don't automatically get voice
triple click the home button. Also you can get your data back when you enter
your user name and password after restoring.

Re: Iphone 4s in recovery mode when trying to update to ios 7.03

2013-10-23 Thread John Diakogeorgiou
So connect your phone to ITunes and it will recognize that it needs to
be restored and prompt you. When finished if you don't automatically
get voice triple click the home button. Also you can get your data
back when you enter your user name and password after restoring.

2013-10-23 Thread Jen Colley
It's saying that I have to restore back to the factory settings but that
would mean I'll lose everything.

I don't see an option to restore to a backup time on the computer.

When you restore to factory settings it will ask for a user name and
password for both the ICloud and ITunes. By entering these you will
get back your data.

iPhone Update: Recovery Mode?

2013-06-26 Thread Sirena
Hey guys. Updating my iPhone. Or, trying to. How long does it normally take?
I'm updating it while it's connected to my computer, charging, and iTunes was
saying something like iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore your iPhone
before it can be used again with iTunes. Any idea what this means?

I have an iPhone 4S.

iPod touch stuck in recovery mode

2013-01-26 Thread johns.kary
Hi guys,
First I'll apologise for not posting anything for a long time, no excuse except
work and laziness. :).
Now for my question. I have an iPod touch 5th gen 32 gig, I plugged it in to
my mac the other day to update a few things, and finally get around to
installing IOS 6.2. wen I started the software update, iTunes informed me that
iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode
I restored the iPod, and now it's stuck in a recovery mode loop.

I've tried every kind of reset there is, but every time I try to do a restore
to get it up and running again, it starts to download the upgrade, but part way
through the download it just says iTunes has detected a iPod in recovery mode.

Does anyone have any other ideas I can try? I'm about an hour and a half away
from an apple store, so taking it in isn't an option.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Kari.
