RE: speech Central and Bookshare question

2024-02-23 Thread Richard Turner
My hopefully last point.

On February 11th, you said in part: “97% of users of my app on Apple devices
aren't VoiceOver users and the same is for 89% of users on Android devices.”

Since you have to prove that you are print disabled to use Bookshare, and while
a lot of the people who do use Bookshare are probably not blind or low-vision
but have dyslexia, it could very well be that the bulk of your user base are
liking your app because they don’t have to strain to read on their device, but
also do not qualify, or have not decided to pay for the Bookshare service.

Have you done any studies/surveys to determine from where your users get their
material?

Take care,

Richard, USA

Richard,

thanks for providing this additional information and for your encouragement
regarding this.

I did implement Bookshare functionality previously because quite a few people
asked for it at that time. Certainly some of them did use the app with
Bookshare, but based on the statistics it is likely that most didn't.

The feature was available for 7 years until January 20th this year. I do agree
that future and new circumstances may require for me to revisit this question.
It is just that this will require a notable effort and as such until there is a
sign of actual interest it is better to focus on other things...

IN the long run, of course, no one app will meet everyone’s needs or wants.
That why it is good to have choices.

I am sorry, I have ignored this part of the feedback because that's actually
possible, maybe some improvements in some specific use cases are still needed.

I do agree on your points though. This proves something that I have learned
over the time - most of people suggesting the Bookshare support aren't actually
interested in using the app as they have settled their choices and invested a
lot of time into them. Nothing wrong from their side as those suggestions were
made with good intentions, just it took me years and much of wasted work to
understand that.

Thanks.

Richard,

I would like some feedback from your testing.

If you have some suggestion on things that could be improved for the VoiceOver
users in general such feedback is implemented usually within one week. Most
recent example is that one user has suggested today that he doesn't like the
position of VoiceOver cursor in the text after the app reads the text and I
have changed the scrolling default for VoiceOver users so that the current
paragraph is scrolled to the top so VoiceOver would read that paragraph first
(that was possible to manually set before but honestly if someone figured that
out he was a real expert in accessibility). The example from few weeks before
is that user has suggested that the player in the new version can't be easily
dismissed and it was improved immediately so that it can be dismissed with the
double finger Z gesture. I did note that you had a problem with skip
forward/rewind buttons and I believe that this is fixed too (but this problem
wasn't particularly related to VoiceOver).

Even if you don't expect to use the app there are many people that do and your
suggestions will help them to have a better experience.

Regarding the Bookshare support I would like your honest opinion if such
support existed whether you would consider my app for your personal use /
recommend it as one of valid options for such a use case. I like to stand
firmly with my promises so I can't promise anything yet, but I do reevaluate
this and it may be possible to have such supp

Hello,

In order for speech central to see it, you need to download the book in epub
format. Once you do this choose the add option from the main screen in the
speech central app. Next choose the import option and this should open up an
interface to the files app on your iPad. Now the file might be listed under the

RE: speech Central and Bookshare question

2024-02-03 Thread Richard Turner
Thanks Greg.

After going through too many hoops, I got a book in ePub format into Speech
Central.

I will not do that again until direct downloading from Bookshare.org is put
into the app.

I also find the app continually dumping me out of the app when I try to skip
forward 60 seconds, or sometimes when double tapping on the next button.

I wish Ivan would implement navigating by headings at the very least.

This app may be fine if you have some vision, but I won’t be bothering with it
again until and unless direct download at least is added back in.

I download way more than 10 things a month.

Greg, thanks again for your help.

Hello,

In order for speech central to see it, you need to download the book in epub
format. Once you do this choose the add option from the main screen in the
speech central app. Next choose the import option and this should open up an
interface to the files app on your iPad. Now the file might be listed under the
recents section or you might have to go to the browse tab at the bottom to look
for the folder where the file downloaded to. Once you find the book you should
just have to double tap on it to import it into speech central.

speech Central and Bookshare question

2024-02-02 Thread Richard Turner
I just tried downloading a book from Bookshare.org on my iPad Mini 6.

It downloaded through Edge (my browser of choice) just fine.

I cannot figure out a way to get it into the Speech Central app.

It doesn't seem to see it.

Does it have to be unzipped? What exactly should one do to get it into the
Books and articles section of Speech Central?
