Re: Best PDF reader?

2013-12-12 Thread Esther
Hello Brian, Todd, Isaac, and Others,

I am extremely puzzled by Isaac's recommendation of the sReader app as a PDF
reader because, according to the reviewer who posted an entry at AppleVis for
this app, while sReader supports reading ePub, PDF, and TXT file formats, the
reading of PDFs and TXT files is not accessible with VoiceOver. He is using
sReader to read ePub files in place of iBooks because he wants to avoid the
annoying pause for the page turn graphic at the end of each page, and also
because he wanted a reader that would stop at the end of each chapter (in the
case of falling asleep while reading at night, to make it easier to find ones
place).

Here is the link to the AppleVis directory entry for sReader by Sof:
http://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/books/sreader
There is a link under the Comments section to a Google translation of a
detailed review that he wrote of this review in French. In paragraph 10 of that
translated review Sof states, SReader is able to read PDF and TXT files, but
Reading them does not seem to be accessible with VoiceOver.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

 Hi all,

I frequenntly have to access large PDFs.  In the
native reader, if you move to another app while reading a PDF and then return
 to
the PDF it seems it takes you back to the beginning of the document.  This
is frustrating when you're in a 600 pade PDF and have to scroll to find where
you were.  I've also tried the adobe Reader for iOS but it seems to have
it's own limitations as well, reading an entire page at a time as opposed to
say, a single paragraph on a page.  Has anyone had better results with
 other apps?

 Thanks,

Re: Mighty boom Buster speaker ball!

 Hi,
I've just received, through the post, something I ordered last week. Now, I
must be honest, I have only played with it for half an hour or so, but,
considering the price, the size, the portability, this is a brilliant little
 toy! So, what is it?

Basically, it is a small plastic ball measuring approximately an inch and a
half in diameter. One half of the ball unscrews and shows a sticky rubberised
pad. This sticky pad can be attached to, virtually, any surface. The ball is
connected via cable directly to your iPhone. There is a small battery case
for two I think they are called penlight batteries but will check on that
later halfway along this cable. Also, when I say iPhone, this device will
work with any sound output device that has an ear plug Jack so, a nano and
iPod and iPad or any of the android devices. What it does: it uses the
structure of the body to which you have attached it as a speaker. Thus, when
I stick it to my large fridge I get a good big sound with a reasonable degree
of base! Wooden cupboards are, of course, very good too! You can create
different kinds of sound using different items, for example, a tin might get
you more high-pitched frequencies. I was thinking, this might be useful for
people with hearing difficulties who prefer different frequencies.

It is, of course, a sort of toy! But it actually works! I think it cost about
€12, but don't quote me on that. This is something you can put in a pocket
attached to the key ring or put in your bag and you could easily forget that
you've got it. But you do have to remember to keep the cables and batteries
with it. I shall play some more, but I was thinking it a worthwhile thing to
mention here especially with Christmas coming up! It may be that there are
Bluetooth versions of these which would make it even more portable! But as it
stands I'm very glad have bought this one for now. Below is the first scan I
have taken from the small bit of documentation that came with the device.
Maybe it will whet your appetite? And I will be back with more info, if
 anyone is interested, that is.

2013-12-12 Thread Blind Treasures
I'm still having issues loading books into Bard Mobile. I followed the very
detailed instructions below but when I get to the step where it states to
click on open in and I click on Bard Mobile, I get an error that states this
file type can't be viewed. I go into bard mobile anyway to see if it loaded
but nothing. Is there certain types of MP3 files that bard mobile can't
read? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

was: Re: Bard Mobile

The error looks to me like it's a bard problem but I think it's definitely
not a problem with anybody's individual phone.

I just posted steps for dropbox. Here they are again.

1. Put the zip file in your dropbox folder on your computer. Make sure it
has time to have uploaded into dropbox.

open dropbox on your device. If your zip file doesn't show up there, just
wait; eventually it will.

3. Find the zip file. Double tap it. Then wait till the progress says 100%.

4. Double tap share.

5. Double tap open in.

6. Double tap open in bard mobile.

The bard mobile app will open but will still not show the new book. This
time I just left it open and and after a couple of minutes I got an alert
that said the request had timed out. This may or may not happen to you.
Remember the book has to do more than just be in the app; it has to be
authorized which means the server is being contacted if I understand
correctly.

7. Go out of the app. I didn't remove it from the app switcher; I just
pressed the home button on my phone and then pressed the home button twice
to get back into the app switcher and found the bard mobile app and double
tapped on it.

I think it might have still said 5 audiobooks but as I flicked through the
books, I found my new one. Then I checked again and it did say 6 audiobooks.
Order of this may vary. You might have to go out of the bard app and back in
more than once.

RE: Bard wishlist problem plus transfering to Bard app with dropbox: was: Re: Bard Mobile

2013-12-12 Thread Thom Spittle
I don't think that you can import mp3 books in bard mobile.
What they were talking about with zip files were NLS books that you may have
on your computer that you wish to transfer to the bard app.
I have had no problems adding books to the wishlist and importing them to
the app.
If you need any help, let me know.

I'm still having issues loading books into Bard Mobile. I followed the
very
detailed instructions below but when I get to the step where it states to
click on open in and I click on Bard Mobile, I get an error that states
this
file type can't be viewed. I go into bard mobile anyway to see if it
loaded
but nothing. Is there certain types of MP3 files that bard mobile can't
read? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Then wait till the progress says
100%.

I didn't remove it from the app switcher; I just
pressed the home button on my phone and then pressed the home button
 twice
to get back into the app switcher and found the bard mobile app and double
 tapped on it.

I think it might have still said 5 audiobooks but as I flicked through the
books, I found my new one. Then I checked again and it did say 6
 audiobooks.
Order of this may vary. You might have to go out of the bard app and back
in
 more than once.

Talking Tuner is Fixed

2013-12-12 Thread Karen Poulakos
An update to Talking Tuner was on the App Store this morning. It works much
better. I found the response time to be a bit longer from the time you play
a note to the time it is spoken, especially below middle C. This probably
isn't as much of a problem on a guitar, as on a 40 string harp.

It's a huge improvement from the last update, and I'm so happy to have this
app working again!

 Hi all,

I frequenntly have to access large PDFs. In the
native reader, if you move to another app while reading a PDF and then
 return to
the PDF it seems it takes you back to the beginning of the document. This
is frustrating when you're in a 600 pade PDF and have to scroll to find

it's own limitations as well, reading an entire page at a time as opposed to
say, a single paragraph on a page. Has anyone had better results with
 other apps?

 Thanks,

2013-12-12 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Make sure you are tapping on the zip file and not one of the individual files
or a folder. And no, you can't play mp3 files in the app which is what makes me
think you are not choosing the zip file. Also, just to be clear, once something
is in your wish list, you do not have to use dropbox. You can directly download
from your wish list in the Bard mobile app on your phone now that this feature
appears to be working again.

Maps iconMany urbanites and city dwellers get about by walking, the
oldest form of transportation in existence. If you’re one of us who
often gets about a concrete jungle by propelling your legs in a
forwardly direction, you’ll be pleased to know that the popular
mapping applications in iOS have you covered. Both the default Maps
app from Apple and Google Maps offer walking directions, though using
each is slightly different.

Set Walking Directions as Default in Apple Maps for iOS

Notice this is “set” walking directions, because with Apple Maps you
can set the default direction choice to be walking, which is excellent
if you spend most of your time in a walkable downtown region.

 1. Open the “Settings” app and choose “Maps”
 2. Scroll down to “Preferred Directions” and tap on “Walking” to set
foot traffic as your new default preference
 3. Exit out of Settings and go back to the Maps app for changes to
take effect

Walking directions on the iPhone

Directions will now be provided with a preference by foot travel, and
it’s usually pretty good, providing sidewalk shortcuts and foot/bike
overpasses when possible. For the most part, this is really best for a
city, and it’s a largely fruitless endeavor beyond the obvious for
smaller towns, which often set the walking directions as the same as
driving directions.

This can also be useful to toggle on for those visiting a downtown
region for the day, say if you have a car parked in a garage and have
spent the day walking around, since it can make the pin drop
find-your-car trick
http://osxdaily.com/2013/08/20/use-iphone-find-where-car-parked/
more appropriate for getting back to the car by foot.DRUDGE SIREN

Get Walking Directions in Google Maps for iOS

Google Maps handles walking directions a bit different than Apple
Maps, with no general default setting other than what you last used.
This means if you last looked for driving directions, that will be
your default, or if you last used walking, then foot travel would be
the default. Anyway, using Google for walking directions is super simple:

 1. Open Google Maps and search for a destination, or tap and hold to
drop a pin
 2. Tap the walking guy icon at the top of the screen to toggle
walking directions on
 3. Now tap the desired route from the list to draw walking directions
on the map

Walking directions in Google Maps

Google Maps seems to have more walking data than Apple Maps, and
you’ll sometimes get slightly different and often better walking
directions for some locations, particularly smaller cities. Google
also lets you drop a destination into the middle of nowhere, meaning
no where near a road at all, and it will try it’s best to give you
walking directions to get there – which can mean travel through parks,
trails, walkways, and other corridors that may be otherwise not quite
obvious.

Even for driving I generally recommend having both Google Maps and
Apple Maps installed on iPhones, since adding Google Maps doesn’t take
up much space, and, let’s face it, it’s still more accurate for many
places anyway. The accuracy gap is shrinking, but urban folks will
still often be better served by Google Maps, and thus it really does
deserve a place on the iPhone of anyone who plans on spending a lot of
time walking about in a city, even if it’s just for vacation. Another
helpful trick is to remember that many city streets are laid out on a
grid, sometimes in obvious north/south/east/west fashion, which can
makes reorienting the maps to be pointing north
http://osxdaily.com/2012/10/10/reorient-maps-to-run-north-south-again-in-ios/
particularly helpful when walking around.

Has anyone found a 30pin cable that would work from a docking station to
the IPhone 4 and 4s? I have one but it only works with the USB cable I use
to charge the phone.

Jambox question

2013-12-12 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I bought the small Jambox about two years ago on sale. Now I have a
problem with it and need input from other Jambox users before I decide
how to deal with this issue.

On the surface, it seems that the battery won't hold a charge because
the sound is extremely fuzzy even immediately after a full charge.
Also, the battery dies quickly and becomes completely non functional.

So now for the question. Since the battery is not user replaceable, I
need to ascertain whether the problem is the battery or the Jambox
itself. So if others have experienced similar Jambox problems, please
tell me if the problem is battery related or not. If it is, then I will
take the thing down to batteries plus.

Thanks much.

RE: temperature App

2013-12-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Cathy,

Did you see my post about the Netatmo Weather Station? It will do what you
want, but you do have to buy the weather station for $180.
There are a ton of weather apps which tell you the outside temperature at
the nearest government weather station to you, but for indoor temperature
you first need something to measure the temperature since the iPhone itself
is not a thermometer.
If you look for my message yesterday or find the link for the archives in
the footer and then search for Netatmo you will find all my previous
messages about it, it's an easy search since Netatmo is a completely unique
word, it's not like Bluetooth headset or mini keyboard.

Interesting enough Steve, this does seem to be correct. I am wondering what

Re: Jambox question

2013-12-12 Thread SSEric
I don't have a fuzzy sound nor his, so much as a fluttering his? My jam box
does still keep a charge rather well.

I did recently have my son try downloading an update. This is after almost 2
years of having the jam box. What ever the update was, it does not seem to have
made any difference in performance.

I must say the hiss is mostly noticeable only when using voice over. If I am

noticeable.

The error looks to me like it's a bard problem but I think it's
 definitely
not a problem with anybody's individual phone.

Then wait till the progress says
 100%.

 7. Go out of the app. I didn't remove it from the app switcher; I just
pressed the home button on my phone and then pressed the home button
 twice
to get back into the app switcher and found the bard mobile app and
 double
 tapped on it.

I think it might have still said 5 audiobooks but as I flicked through
 the

 audiobooks.
Order of this may vary. You might have to go out of the bard app and back

Re: Fleksy Alternatives for pre-iOS 7 Users?

2013-12-12 Thread Bill Rappos
Lucian, Christopher, thanks for following up on the discussion.

I understand your concerns and agree that the switch to iOS 7 did not go as
planned. The unexpected time bomb bug forced our hand before we could
incorporate iOS 6 support for our brand new engine or even communicate the
change appropriately.
There is, however, reason why our keyboard service is at this time
compatible only with iOS 7. As of today, Fleksy is available as a keyboard
option for third party apps. This means that Fleksy can be integrated at
the application-level of any iOS app. Any developer can incorporate Fleksy
into their app, giving their users the choice to type with Fleksy.

We were able to develop the SDK because of the tools iOS 7 introduced.

However, since last week we made progress in porting the new engine to iOS
6 and have built alpha versions since. Pending a few crashes, we will be
submitting an update for Fleksy to restore functionality for iOS 6 as soon
as possible.

Once again, thank you fore your patience and understanding!

- Bill from the Fleksy team

I'm not sure Fleksy is leaving that many people behind. The vast majority
of people have moved up to IOS 7. I think the people with a real beef are
those iPhone 3 users who can't move up to IOS 7 at all.

Fleksy is by no means the only app that predates IOS 7 which is now only
supported on IOS 7. Obviously, a developer would have to spend testing
resources on IOS 6 and IOS 7 if they're going to continue to support both
levels of the operating system. This cost alone may keep a small company
from supporting both operating systems. It's also my understanding that
Apple changes API's from version to version, so it's not a given that
there's no work involved in supporting both IOS 6 and IOS 7.

Apple did take a beating when they rolled out IOS 7 updates automatically
to people whether they upgraded or wanted to upgrade or not, so I'm sure
they'd take a beating in the scenario you described below. This doesn't
mean it isn't a good business idea for Apple to keep moving people up and
for developers to assume everyone is on the latest. This model has
obviously been wildly successful for Apple, and there's a lot of benefits
for Apple, developers and users to all be on the latest and greatest
 software.

On 12/11/2013 12:48 AM, Lucian Fratila wrote:

Honestly I can't think of any other app that with no prior notice pulled
support from a large chunk of its users (those on iOS 6 in this case).

Yes I have an iPhone 4 and no, I don't want to upgrade to 7 for an
obvious variety of reasons - and most certainly not because an app forces
me to. What I find absolutely mind-boggling is that we're talking here
about an offline app, that worked very well thank you on iOS 6 before.

Yes, I did contact Fleksy support and they simply told me that Fleksy
version 1.9 (the last iOS 6 working version) is not supported anymore. As
 if they had to!

Yes, there are apps that only work on iOS 7 these days. But they either
started on iOS 7, or they have a backend that no longer supports the iOS 6
version. As far as I understand, the technology behind Fleksy is built-in
inside the app and does not require online presence (heck, if a typing app
requires you to be connected to their servers, then something is fishy big
 time).

So in short I find no excusable justification to what Fleksy did. They're
lucky their service is not high profile and they don't affect a real lot of
paying users. Just think the backlash that, say, Apple would get if
suddenly iTunes would no longer start on OS X pre-Mavericks, and would give
you no option but to upgrade, even on a 2007 laptop. Luckily for them
Fleksy is no Apple. But at this rate, I don't see them even turning
profitable. What a shame when it's not the technology that buries you, but
 poor customer support.

Hi,
I've just received, through the post, something I ordered last week. Now,
I must be honest, I have only played with it for half an hour or so, but,
considering the price, the size, the portability, this is a brilliant
little toy! So, what is it?

Basically, it is a small plastic ball measuring approximately an inch and
a half in diameter. One half of the ball unscrews and shows a sticky
rubberised pad. This sticky pad can be attached to, virtually, any
surface. The ball is connected via cable directly to your iPhone. There is
a small battery case for two I think they are called penlight batteries
but will check on that later halfway along this cable. Also, when I say
iPhone, this device will work with any sound output device that has an
ear plug Jack so, a nano and iPod and iPad or any of the android devices.
What it does: it uses the structure of the body to which you have attached
it as a speaker. Thus, when I stick it to my large fridge I get a good big
sound with a reasonable degree of base! Wooden cupboards are, of course,
very good too! You can create different kinds of sound using different
items, for example, a tin might get you more high-pitched frequencies. I
was thinking, this might be useful for people with hearing difficulties
who prefer different frequencies.

It is, of course, a sort of toy! But it actually works! I think it cost
about €12, but don't quote me on that. This is something you can put in a
pocket attached to the key ring or put in your bag and you could easily
forget that you've got it. But you do have to remember to keep the cables
and batteries with it. I shall play some more, but I was thinking it a
worthwhile thing to mention here especially with Christmas coming up! It
may be that there are Bluetooth versions of these which would make it even
more portable! But as it stands I'm very glad have bought this one for
now. Below is the first scan I have taken from the small bit of
documentation that came with the device. Maybe it will whet your appetite?
And I will be back with more info, if anyone is interested, that is.

Re: IPhone voices

2013-12-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
There are potentially two places to check. First, Settings - General -
Accessibility - Voice Over On and look for the Use compact voice
setting. This should be toggled to off if you want to use the high
quality voices.

Also, continue on into Languages and Dialects and double tap on your
default dialect. At the bottom, you'll want to make sure Enhanced
quality is set to on. This will download the enhanced quality voice if
it needs to.

There is a search button in the upper left corner of the screen.
Double-tap on it and enter the street address, city and state and zip if you

Re: Apex staying paired with IPad and IPhoneBluetooth and

2013-12-12 Thread Alex Hall
I find that turning off the iOS device, then turning it back on, lets me try

tell you that search is dimmed, you probably will need to turn off BlueTooth
in both the iPad, as well as the Apex and reboot both devices and start the

enter the and then quickly find the pair button. Sometimes I have been
lucky and have paired very quickly; however, the first time I paired my Apex

What helps is to turn off or lock the first device before pairing

There is an active discussion going on the BrailleNote list where

I have both an IPad and an IPhone. I recently got an Apex BT 32.
It seems that when I get my apex and IPad finally paired and work
with that for a while things go well. Then, if I try to work

Should I maybe completely turn off the device I was using with

 pair each time?

Hope my question is clear enough?

Re: Which speakers are better

2013-12-12 Thread Steve

Yes, I have both the Bose and the large Jambox.

I did a comparison a couple years ago. The Bose reproduces slightly better
low end bass, but there isn't a significant difference. Frankly, what
difference there might be can be addressed by using a different sound
equalization with the Jambox.

From a usability standpoint, the Jambox is just much better. It is
extremely useable with Voice Feedback for mode, battery, etc. It has the
ability to be used as a speakerphone or to interact with Siri which the Bose
does not. If we're listening to music in the hot tub, the Jambox will allow
us to ask for a specific song or atist or answer the phone.

Finally, I haven't had the pairing fights with Jambox that the Bose speaker
used to give me. The Bose has acted a bit better after their software
update, but still no comparison to the ease of using the Jambox.

The only bad thing about the Jambox, (but when I updated the Bose it was
similarly annoying) is that the update software is not real accessible. I
had to use the Jaws OCR feature to be able to run the updater.

RE: Fleksy Alternatives for pre-iOS 7 Users?

2013-12-12 Thread Alan Lemly
Bill, thanks so much for providing this information. I am still optimistic
I'll get Fleksy back on my iOS 6.1.4 iPhone 5 but it is very nice to know
what was driving your decision to move to iOS 7. The ability for third-party
apps to integrate the Fleksy keyboard into their app so that users can type
with Fleksy is a wonderful feature. If I'm reading my list posts correctly,
it sounds as if BlindSquare has already integrated Fleksy.

I look forward to your updates on this issue at least until I decide to
upgrade to iOS 7.

This means that Fleksy can be integrated at the
application-level of any iOS app. Any developer can incorporate Fleksy into
their app, giving their users the choice to type with Fleksy.

We were able to develop the SDK because of the tools iOS 7 introduced.

However, since last week we made progress in porting the new engine to iOS 6
and have built alpha versions since. Pending a few crashes, we will be
submitting an update for Fleksy to restore functionality for iOS 6 as soon
as possible.

Once again, thank you fore your patience and understanding!

- Bill from the Fleksy team

keyboard right now at

I'm not sure Fleksy is leaving that many people behind. The vast majority of
people have moved up to IOS 7. I think the people with a real beef are those

Apple did take a beating when they rolled out IOS 7 updates automatically to
people whether they upgraded or wanted to upgrade or not, so I'm sure they'd
take a beating in the scenario you described below. This doesn't mean it
isn't a good business idea for Apple to keep moving people up and for
developers to assume everyone is on the latest. This model has obviously
been wildly successful for Apple, and there's a lot of benefits for Apple,
developers and users to all be on the latest and greatest software.

On 12/11/2013 12:48 AM, Lucian Fratila wrote:

Honestly I can't think of any other app that with no prior notice pulled
support from a large chunk of its users (those on iOS 6 in this case).

Yes I have an iPhone 4 and no, I don't want to upgrade to 7 for an obvious
variety of reasons - and most certainly not because an app forces me to.
What I find absolutely mind-boggling is that we're talking here about an
offline app, that worked very well thank you on iOS 6 before.

Yes, I did contact Fleksy support and they simply told me that Fleksy
version 1.9 (the last iOS 6 working version) is not supported anymore. As if
they had to!

Just think the backlash that, say, Apple would get if suddenly
iTunes would no longer start on OS X pre-Mavericks, and would give you no
option but to upgrade, even on a 2007 laptop. Luckily for them Fleksy is no
Apple. But at this rate, I don't see them even turning profitable. What a
shame when it's not the technology that buries you, but poor customer
support.

Hi, how much are these jawbox speakers? I did search on qvc and hsn.com
and they are selling there for about $250 to $300. I know you gave a
comparison of the Bose and the jambox but are they worth that kind of money?
I would love to hear your comments if you will. Thanks, Andy

I can'

Voice Dream Reader Cost

2013-12-12 Thread Joe
Hi, I see Voice Dream Reader costs something like $10. How much do
additional voices cost? It didn't say in the app store description. Sorry if
I've missed this somewhere. Finally, is Voice Dream Reader going to be
significantly better than the twenty-dollar InDAISY I've already got? Thanks
in advance.

Re: Voice Dream Reader Cost

2013-12-12 Thread Richard Turner
The extra voices are between $1.99 and $2.99.
I had bought several voices, but now pretty much use Bridget for things I want
a high quality British female reader and James for a US Male reader.
Of course, you will also have access to the iOS voices for free.
I have not used Indaisy so I can't comment.
Voice Dream handles text, word documents, pdf and epub plus now MP3 files.
Plus, downloads directly from Bookshare or Gutenberg. Accesses Dropbox and even
web pages if you have a URL you want to paste in.
I used to have the $20 Read 2 go app, but now exclusively use Voice Dream.

RE: jawbones jambox will not stay on and looking for the jambox home page for updating

2013-12-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Dan,

What you describe when the Jambox is plugged in is normal behavior. I am not
sure why more companies don't make products which can be used as well while
they are plugged in, but that's beside the point, if the Jambox is plugged
in you can't use it.

Now, as for the Jambox not staying on while it's unplugged, have you checked
your charging cable and charger? Make sure everything is properly oplugged
in and there is power to the outlet you are using. If all that is OK you
might want to try a different micro USB cable in case the one you are using
is defective. To me it sounds like you plug the Jambox in but it is in fact
not charging and the battery is so run down that it doesn't come on or if it
does immediately shuts off again.

Regards,

Sieghard
