Thank you s much, Karen. Someone else on the list suggested turning the
Orbit Reader Plus on first. It worked. I will be using this unit mostly when
traveling. But I wanted a smaller and more compact unit And Hims Inc. stopped
making the best Braille display ever by discontinuing the BRAILLEEdge 40. I
love Braille and the Orbit's a neat little devicedd

You can use the move by word, then character, to get to the problem. Use the
rotor commands, space+dots2,3 turn rotor counterclockwise. Space+dots5,6, turns
the rotor clockwise. space+dot3 moves by whatever rotor choice to the left, and
space+6 goes to the right. So, using word and character on the rotor will get
You to the spot.
Of course the lines option helps too when needing to move farther.

Interesting idea for an app. I can’t seem to get it to recognize anything… I

I assume there is no interface to the app except for the start up dialog.

How to delete an Apple ID Account, Apple Insider

2022-02-26 Thread M. Taylor
How to delete an Apple ID account
By Malcolm Owen, Feb 23, 2022

If you really don't want to have an Apple ID associated with your identity,
it is possible to delete it.

Here's how to eliminate the Apple-centric account.

There are a few reasons to delete an Apple ID account completely, including
some that are quite sensible and plausible. For example, a person may have
multiple accounts set up by accident but only wants to use one and not the
other.

On the other end of the scale, there's reasons such as no longer wanting to
be associated with Apple or its products at all, or a person wishing to
disassociate themselves from technology as a move to go "off-grid."

Regardless of the reason, Apple offers the option to delete your Apple ID
account.

The results of deletion
As Apple has a strong track record concerning user privacy, the deletion of
an Apple ID is quite easy to accomplish, much like the ability to request
all of the data it has on file for your account. However, the action of
deleting the account can have far-reaching effects.

Obviously, the main change is that you cannot sign in to an Apple ID once it
has been deleted. Apple removes the account details associated with the
Apple ID, permanently deleting them and making them unusable for all Apple
services, such as the App Store, iTunes, Apple Pay, iMessage, and any
purchased or downloadable content on those services.
This also means any user data associated with the account stored on Apple's
servers will be deleted, including any photographs, videos, documents, and
other content stored in iCloud. Even Apple Store appointments and AppleCare
support cases are canceled as part of the process, but it doesn't cancel any
repairs or Apple Store orders.

Any subscriptions linked to the account will be automatically canceled at
the end of their billing cycles, but you won't be able to use your Apple ID
to access them. Users enrolled in the iPhone upgrade program will continue
to make payments for their devices.

These changes also affect things you may have acquired from Apple's digital
storefronts and already downloaded. You won't be able to watch rented items,
authorize computers to play DRM-protected content you previously acquired,
nor re-download any purchased items, among other problems.

If you delete the account, Apple warns that it is a permanent event.
"After your account is deleted, Apple can't reopen or reactivate your
account or restore your data," Apple warns.
Apple doesn't delete all of the data associated with the account, such as
transactional information for financial reporting or information needed to
comply with a court settlement. But outside of these exceptions, the Apple
ID will be functionally useless to its user once the deletion takes place.

Apple recommends performing a few actions before going through with a
deletion, to safeguard any personal data that you may want to retain.

What to do before you delete your Apple ID account
The deletion process
If you have decided that deleting your account is the right course of
action, Apple requires users go through a number of steps. By the end of the
process, the user will have made the request to delete the account
completely.

How to delete your Apple ID account
1. Log into Apple's Data and Privacy website with your Apple ID. You
may be required to perform two-factor authentication to continue.
2. Under the heading Delete your account, click the link to Request to
delete your account.
3. On the new page, select a reason for deletion from the dropdown box,
then click Continue.
4. After going through a checklist of things to bear in mind when
deleting the account, click Continue.
5. Review the Deletion Terms & Conditions, tick the checkbox, and click
Continue.
6. Tell Apple how to receive status updates on the account's deletion,
then click Continue. This can include a different Apple ID, an email
address, or a phone number.
7. Make a record of the access code Apple provides, and click Continue.

8. Enter the access code to confirm what you noted down was correct,
and click Continue.
9. Check the final reminders of the effects of account deletion, then
click Delete account.
10. On the confirmation screen, click Sign out.

The process itself isn't an automatic deletion of the account, but instead,
a request to Apple to have the account and associated data deleted. For
security reasons, Apple will verify the account deletion request before
proceeding, and the entire process could take seven days to complete.
During this verification period, the account will still be active. It is
also possible to reactivate the account during this time, by contacting
Apple Support and providing the access code.

An alternative - account deactivation
If permanently deleting your data isn't appealing, you could still
temporarily close your account down while keeping the data and other
elements intact. Apple calls this account

Hello Mont,
Yes, the audio narrators are real people, not a TTS.
So, in the Kindle app, you can read the title via VoiceOver or choose to hear
the human voices which were recorded in a studio; the same audio heard in any
Audible title.
You can also navigate the title via the audio narration or via VoiceOver. For
example, when you use a VoiceOver gesture to change pages or jump to a specific
location in the book, when next you engage the Audible portion, the human voice
narration reading will resume at the same location. It's really quite amazing
(smile).
In the US, a standard annual Prime membership subscription is currently $139.

Subject: Attention All Amazon Prime Subscribers
Hello Everyone,
I am posting this because I recently discovered a new resource for accessing /
downloading newly released and more, Audible audiobooks at no additional charge
to Prime subscribers.
Please understand that there is a great deal about Amazon and Amazon prime
benefits that many find rather confusion, including me, so I am just going to
relay my experience and in no way am I posting as an expert.
Okay, the other day, I saw an advertisement for a newly released collection of
short stories that were published on Kindle, only, with audio narration
(narration by Audible). There was a fee for the collection but the
advertisement stated that Prime members could download and read the collection
for free.
Intrigued, I fired up my trusty iOS Kindle app and opened the Discover tab.
Now remember, I'm going to keep this as simple as possible. In no way was my
first experience a quick and smooth one for I had no idea of how any of this
worked.
Okay, after opening the Discover tab, I selected the category, "Prime Reading."
There is also a "Kindle Unlimited" category, which I did not explore.
I suspect that the Kindle Unlimited program is to Prime Reading as the Amazon
Music Unlimited program is to Prime Music; a guess, only.
Once I selected Prime Reading, a new screen was displayed. There are several
sub categories to explore but, in order to search for a specific title, I
selected "Browse the Catalog."
On the next screen, there are two important items to note: (1) the search
field and (2) the filter button.
Whether you merely want to browse the catalog or search for a specific title,
set the filter to "eBooks with Audible" and launch your search.
All of the resulting titles will be eBooks that have Audible narration that are
free for Prime members to read in Kindle and/or listen to via Audible.
Of course there are many, many ways to navigate through the Prime Reading
universe but the above was the method I used to get started.
What I find most delightful is that I have been able to download some titles
that were published for Kindle, only, and still enjoy the Audible experience
without having to pay additional fees.
Okay, I hope you find this useful.
Happy Reading,
Mark

Interesting idea for an app. I can’t seem to get it to recognize anything… I
gave it camera access.

I assume there is no interface to the app except for the start up dialog.

The app recognizes common obstacles (crosswalk signal, crosswalk and traffic

Re: Using voice over with Kindle

2022-02-26 Thread Barbara Stahl
Hi!
What version of kindle are you using? I ask because my app works very
differently than what you described in your previous email.
for instance doing a single two finger swipe down the page activates continuous
reading until you tap or touch the screen to stop it. You do a single finger
double tap to activate the menu and its really easy to use. You just double tap
the various options and there features and menus open. Its super easy. If you
double tap more options, you can move by page and if you go to the table of
contents, you can double tap the place you want to go such as a chapter or
section and the app will take you there.
as for turning pages, you do it with a three finger swipe to the right or left.
Swipe left to go forward and right to go back. To keep this straight in your
head, just picture turning the pages of a physical book. When you want to flip
forward, you flip the pages to the left and you do the opposite to go back a
page. If you just want to read by fliping the pages yourself rather than
continuous reading, then go to the page you want to start reading and kindle
will read that page then you do the three finger flick to the left to go to the
next page and kindle will read that page and stop at the end of it.
alternatively, if you are already on the page you wish to begin on just flick
back one page then forward to your desired page and kindle will begin reading
that page and stop at the end and you just flick forward to have it read the
next page.

2022-02-26 Thread Cris Ali
I downloaded the nest app few months ago and it seemed accessible to me.
However, I do not have a nest thermostat to pair it with and try. At any rate,
you could probably buy the google home speaker and use google assist to manage
the nest thermostat.

it’s an app from Amazon. Books cost various amounts. You can sign up for
something called “Kindle Unlimited quote and you could can get books to borrow
up to 10 at a time I think the cost for that is about nine dollars a month but
there are a lot of books. You can go on Amazon to the Kindle store and see
what’s there.

I'm not sure of the distinction you are making.

If you are doing space+dot3 with the rotor on words, are you not using the
Orbit to move the cursor?

If you are using any keyboard, qwerty or braille, the only way to move the
cursor is with VoiceOver commands using the keyboard.

I don’t think just using the arrow keys works when connected to the iPhone.

Perhaps it should.

A new build for the firmware is going into beta testing next week for the Orbit
Reader 20 plus. This would be a good time to request any changes to the
current functionality.

RE: Attention All Amazon Prime Subscribers

2022-02-26 Thread M. Taylor

Mark

Hi all,

Thanks, Mark, for this tip. I’ll get some good mileage out of that, I suspect.
:)

Just thought I’d add that you can do something kind of similar to this from
within the Audible app. If you tap The Discover tab, at the top will be severl
filters you can use, one of which is Included in My Library. These are titles
in the Audio Plus category, which means they are free to you as an Audible
subscriber. When I first learned about this, I dismissed it, because it seemed
like a lot of the freebies were just podcasts. But when I looked more closely,
I saw that there are some interesting titles included. For example, after
watching The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix, I was able to download the audio book
for free. If you’re looking for a specific book, and want to see if it’s in
your Audio Plus catalog, go to the Discover tab, and then tap Search. Type or
dictate the title you’re looking for, and then select the Included in my
Library filter.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Donna

The app is free. Books cost whatever a sighted user would pay Amazon for the
Kindle version of the book. Mark just posted a message to this list about the
books that are available free with an Amazon Prime subscription.

it’s an app from Amazon. Books cost various amounts. You can sign up for
something called “Kindle Unlimited quote and you could can get books to borrow
up to 10 at a time I think the cost for that is about nine dollars a month but
there are a lot of books. You can go on Amazon to the Kindle store and see
what’s there.

When you want to flip
forward, you flip the pages to the left and you do the opposite to go back a
page. If you just want to read by fliping the pages yourself rather than
continuous reading, then go to the page you want to start reading and kindle
will read that page then you do the three finger flick to the left to go to the
next page and kindle will read that page and stop at the end of it.
alternatively, if you are already on the page you wish to begin on just flick
back one page then forward to your desired page and kindle will begin reading
that page and stop at the end and you just flick forward to have it read the
next page.

For Karen and others, Orbit Reader and Editing using the buffer

2022-02-26 Thread Richard Turner
Karen,

Another method you could use is the buffer Edit Mode.

It allows you to buffer your text on the Orbit itself, so the arrow keys
work as normal arrow keys to navigate the text you have written.

While connected to your iPhone, get n the body of the message, or whatever
edit box it is, then press select+down arrow. You will read, buffer edit
mode on the display.

Now, everything you write until you press dot 8 will only be on the Orbit in
a buffer that you can edit at will.

Once you are satisfied, press dot 8 and it will send it to the Orbit.

VoiceOver will speak each word, slowly, as it receives the text. But this
is a more sure fired way of insuring that you get your text prepared without
mistakes then send it into the edit field on the iPhone.

When you want to flip
forward, you flip the pages to the left and you do the opposite to go back a
page. If you just want to read by fliping the pages yourself rather than
continuous reading, then go to the page you want to start reading and kindle
will read that page then you do the three finger flick to the left to go to the
next page and kindle will read that page and stop at the end of it.
alternatively, if you are already on the page you wish to begin on just flick
back one page then forward to your desired page and kindle will begin reading
that page and stop at the end and you just flick forward to have it read the
next page.

That is great to know.

Please let us know if you take it for a spin and how it does. Remember, for

Have you been able to try it at an intersection or two?

Interesting idea for an app. I can’t seem to get it to recognize anything… I
gave it camera access.

I assume there is no interface to the app except for the start up dialog.

I don’t have a prime membership, but I can also get audible companions for some
of my kindle books. They cost seven dollars each. There is, as I wrote in a
previous message, the option to subscribe to “Kindle unlimited “. You can see
what kinds of books there are in that section by going to the Kindle store.

Mark
