To prevent this from happening in the first place, take the following steps:

Read this advice from Google:

Purchase a good computer virus protection program, and use it according to
instructions. Be sure you run a complete check of your computer. It can be
difficult to rid a computer of a virus once it gets in.

The virus might have infected your e-mail files at montclair.edu. Inform
them.

Change your password. Use a strong password. NEVER use it anywhere else.

Gmail has a 2-step verification procedure, but I do not think this would
prevent the problem, because these messages are not actually coming from
your account.

It is not actually Ludwik Kowalski who is doing this. A virus invaded his
computer (or e-mail account) and stole his address book. Another computer
is generating the e-mails. I told him this. The only way he can fix this is
to change his e-mail address, which is a drastic solution.

That is what it is.

I believe it is the "AIM" virus (also called Oscarbot, Opanki, or Doyorg).
Use an anti-virus program on your computer. Also, change your e-mail
password to something no program can guess to avoid this. If you have
Gmail, use their 2-step verification. You can do this even without a cell
phone.

Notice that this message appears to be from Rich Murray but it is actually
from Kowalski.
