Re: [Vo]:Ban the killer robots before it's too late
The problem is not armed drones. They are little different from advanced artillery. The problem, as always, is who controls them. The real problem would be if they were put under the control of a computer program, like in the Terminator.

As I pointed out, no one controlled most previous weapons, such as WWII bombs dropped from airplanes. Any measure of control is likely to reduce innocent casualties, if the weapon is in the hands of responsible military officers. If the weapon is in the hands of terrorists, control will * increase* innocent casualties! The real problem would be if they were put under the control of a computer program, like in the Terminator. It seems unlikely to me that we will be able to make such a program anytime in the next 100 years. - Jed

Everyone needs to ban them and in a manner that can be verified. I expect a lot of cheating with such a powerful device. I feel like this is one of those quiet developments that will sneak up on us and have profound implications once the technology becomes ubiquitous. I do not see how the technology can profitably be banned without it simply being used solely by organized crime and rogue states. Controlling it will be like trying to push down water. I suspect that society will have to adapt to it by becoming a little more big-brotherish -- for example, keeping careful databases of the relevant parts inventories and and their global movement. I disagree with this author. I think antonymous robots are better than artillery, or WWII style bombs dropped from airplanes, or shooting arrows at a crowd of people in ancient times. Nobody likes to think about war. New weapons always seem especially cruel. Some are, such as gas or nuclear weapons. - Jed

I, for one, welcome our new robot masters... I am pretty sure they will watch the Simpsons, then kill you because you got the quote wrong, imperfection found, eliminate faulty human. I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.
