Bigpond Mail Problems

2003-04-10 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi all,

Has anyone noticed erratic behaviour with Telstra Bigpond Mail recently.
Over the last week or so (I'm not sure exactly when I first noticed it) I
seem to be getting a lot of mail error messages. The message I get (I run
Outlook Express) when I get info from the error log is:

Error

Could not retrieve mail from the account Neil Houghton.

Explanation

The server returned the following error

local error; please try again later (AU).

Error: 7002

The error seems to be short term since I have OE set to check for mail every
10 mins and I don't get a string of consecutive errors. Also often if I run
send and receive immediately after an error it will run OK, though sometimes
it takes two or three tries.

From the error message it would seem that the problem is at Telstra's end?
But as I say, the problem is quite frequent now whereas up until a week or
so ago I never (or almost never that I remember) saw it.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

400MHz Ti G4 Powerbook
OS 9.1
Outlook Express v5.02
Telstra Bigpond dial-up using nation-wide 019830 #

TIA

Sony P800 syncing with Mac

2003-04-10 Thread Brett Carboni
Just saw a customer's Sony P800 mobile phone and was impressed. Perhaps this
can do away with my Newton as long as it can import 8 years of contacts,
recurring appointments and notes.

The owner who writes a electronica column seemed to think it didn't sync
with the Mac. In Windows you can drag drop spreadsheets to the phone. Was
very impressed, esp with ICQ ability which is cheaper than SMS and the
programs available.

Anybody on the list have any success linking their phones with their Macs?

It's almost perfect. Not sure about the small screen, but handwriting
recognition was good, albeit not as god as Newton but that doesn't matter
when your screen is wearing out :-)

BTW, seems Newton is still very popular.

Sony Ericssons are usually what Steve uses to demo iSync, so I'm sure
it'll work with the Mac, the question is, how well? Dropping
spreadsheets onto the phone might be a bit dubious though.

I've iSynced my Palm and phone with my Mac, and I'd be quite happy
with it if there were some way of copying syncing notes off my Palm
with some application. Alternatively there is a phone client which
lets you download, edit and upload the address book from such phones
via BlueTooth.

The printing recognition is quite good, but I don't know about
handwriting (I don't think I tried cursive script). The GUI isn't as
good as the Newton's though. Sigh.

Have fun,

The non-PDA SonyEricssons work fine. The P800 is quite a different
beast. If you try and sync it with a Mac using iSync it will pretty
much kernel panic every time. You should be able to sync the P800 when
Panther rolls out. From what I have heard, you will be able to sync
just about everything with it then.

Can't say too much without dobbing somebody in but you may see a
syncing solution for the P800 prior to Panther.

You can copy information Mac to P800 via Bluetooth but the iSync
solution is obviously the way to go one never knows what might be
around the corner.

BTW the P800 is THE neatest phone I've ever used.

New Virex

2003-04-10 Thread Antony N. Lord

When on earth are we going to see a new version of Virex for either 9.x or X ?

I was thinking about it today and it's just so klunky (to me anyway)
- it just seems very ancient and ugly.

I also seem to remember is isn't exactly easy to install / use under OS X.

Perhaps its just a case of if it ain't broke - don't fix it!

Cheers, Antony.

7.1 was released recently, but in all honesty... virus scanners are
next to useless on a Mac (not counting MS Office junk).

Well yes, this last point is true,..but it's always good to have some
protection. I always look on it like car insurance,I have
it,..but I sure as hell hope I never have to use it!!! (And no digs
at my car thanks Matt or Phil) :p

I used to use Virex, but since they sort of left the race when OS X
came out, I changed across to Norton AntiVirus. I find the Live
Update feature handy and it's fairly easy to use! (Well that's when I
load it of course) :o)

I remember working on a client's machine when they got told they had
a virus (on their Mac.) I was a bit dubious, but infact all of their
Microsoft Word and Excel files (ie their documents) had a Macro Virus
but the rest of the System was clean,...including all the
Applications (Microsoft Word and Excel included),..so went to show
that the Mac holds up,...but Windows lets it down! :o))

well that's my view on it anyway!

Enjoy!!

Re: Wanted - IDE hard disk

2003-04-10 Thread logrythm
Hi Andrew

Due to a recent death (our pc) we have two IDE Seagate Ultra DMA 100 Drives
that we want to convert into the Cash for Blue and White G3 Scheme.
Our poor little 6100 is looking forward to retirement.

We would like to hang onto both drives really, but as we need cash for a
replacement machine, we are willing to sell a kidney!

Take your pick:

20gb $100 (ST320410A)
10gb $60 (ST310211A)

If anyone out there knows of an ATA/PCI mac for sale, that students could
afford, please let us know.
We currently have $500 to spend with a view to gathering together another
hundred or so.

Thanks
Paul

Internet Explorer

2003-04-10 Thread Kelly Duffy
My apologies if the groups gets this twice, but it didn't appear in my inbox
all day so I assume the first one didn't actually get sent properly.

Hi all,

I had some problems with Internet Explorer 5.1, running on Mac OS9.2 the
other day. Its a G4 tower (466) with 640mb RAM. IE crashed my computer and
when I restarted all my IE preferences had changed. The homepage had changed
to an MSN page I don't recall ever having visited rather than the default
page, the security settings changed to maximum, the browser colour had even
changed. My default mail program had also changed, including the Mail alias
on the desktop, and my dictionary/spelling settings had changed to US
English. None of my automatic logins worked and neither did the auto-fill
related things. It was as though IE had reinstalled itself and overwritten
all the preferences and related things but the favourites and cookies were
all still there. It was really strange and I have never seen or heard of it
before. Its been running a little slow recently, particularly with the
Internet, and its crashed quite a lot more than it should, and not with
particularly taxing tasks. It can run multiple big graphics packages without
issues but a few Internet related apps and it runs quite poorly. I have a
56k dialup connection with iiNet and have had no problems like this before
with their service.

I reset all my preferences again and they've saved without a problem but its
still running slowly and below its usual stable self. I ran Virex, with the
most recent virus definitions (updated last night), and it found nothing and
my computer is regularly maintained with Disk Warrior. I've updated all my
Microsoft office programs and Entourage, which is my default mail program,
and there are no further security patches or updates on Mactopia. I've
virtually ruled out software conflicts and I have no idea what else it could
be.

If anybody could give me any suggestions I'd really appreciate it. Perhaps I
need a different virus scanner or to try some further maintenance, or search
for something specific, but I have no idea what. Its got me stumped this
time.

Kind regards,
Kelly Duffy
