The ability to do this lies with the user's own browser, whatever that may be. All you can do in Claris Home Page is to point your link to the location of the file you want the user to see; and of course, the file must be somewhere on the web server, not your own computer, unless it's on all the time and has a fixed IP address. -- Peter Hinchliffe Apwin Computer Services FileMaker Pro Solutions Developer Perth, Western Australia Phone (618) 9332 6482 Fax (618) 9332 0913 Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to. Re: Realist of the year
Tut Tut!!! The solution to me is obvious, but I must ask the question. Why would a company that builds (in this persons view) such crummy computers supply such magnificent software? I wonder if this person has ever seen a Mac or used one, me thinks not! On 29/5/03 4:14 PM, Phillip McGree [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Windows XP user mad at Apple; wants his iTunes Music Store Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 09:07 AM EDT We received an email this morning from a Windows XP user, Michael P., that we feel sheds some light on how some Windows PC users feel about Apple. Here is the email in its entirety: To be perfectly honest, I don't understand why anybody would buy an Apple computer. It is non-standard (everybody uses Windows) and proprietary. Also, it seems to me that Apple is very desperate to sell computers, so much so that they will withhold products that many would want by making them Apple-only, in a bid to force people to buy an Apple in order to use these products. I am a music fan. Yes, I wanted an iPod when it first came out, but it was Apple-only, of course. So, I bought a Nomad Jukebox for use with my Windows system. But, still, it was obvious that the iPod was better, and I kept my eye on them over time, so when Apple finally gave up and made a Windows version, I got my new iPod only to find out that I was stuck with MusicMatch software and not iTunes. At this point, I would like to make it clear that I want a Windows XP version of iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, iChat, iDVD, Sherlock - yes, I've been all over Apple's site - these applications look great, but I can't find versions of them that run on Windows! Why would Apple bother to create all of these applications and not make versions that will run on 99% of the world's computers?! Instead, Apple would force me to buy an Apple computer to run these programs. Why is Apple so insecure? Why do they need to try to force sales of Apples? Obviously, nobody is buying them or they wouldn't have to try to make Apple-only reasons to try to force sales of computers. Which comes down to the reason I am writing: The iTunes Music Store. Why can't I buy songs on my Dell running Windows XP? What kind of a company would open a store that only 1% can shop? It's worse than opening a store catering only to left-handers - there's many times more left-handers in the world than there are Apple computer users! This is ridiculous!!! I would love to use my iPod with iTunes and the Music Store, but I cannot. All because Apple can't seem to sell computers and they are trying to force people to buy Apples. Why limit all of these applications and services to a tiny, insignificant speck of the market? Why not offer them to the majority standard platform and create Windows versions, so the rest of the world can use them, too? In closing, here I sit wanting to spend money at the Apple iTunes Music Store, wanting to run iTunes, iMovie and the rest (I'd even PAY for them), but I cannot. Apple needs to provide a solution for millions and millions of computer users like me! You can print this if you want and I'm sending this to Apple as well. Thank you. - Michael P.

First, IF the general properties of your connection match what the ISP's device wants to see then a basic connection will be made (i.e. you are another modem speaking a known language). Next your login details will be used to verify your account. So if the calls are indeed answered by the ISP but the error doesn't indicate an account problem, it may be a difference between how you are configured (most likely you are configured as you have been told) and how you need to be configured. In other words a dialogue may not yet be possible betwen the two devices. Have you received any advice from the ISP on fixing the issue? Are you specifying the DNS servers (Name Servers) of the ISP in your Network Settings TCP/IP? Two separate ISPs had the same responses to me as to why I was getting slow, missed and dropped connections through them. As the symptoms from both accounts seemed the same, I believe them. However I tried a third ISP and viola! the previous two were made to be liars or worse: duds. A word from the wary. Paul
Problem with installing downloaded software
Hi Muggers, A colleague of mine is unable to install software downloaded from the net (or taken from a cd we have given him), even though two other people have succeeded in doing so. The difference, is that he is using an e-mac running OSX, while we are running OS8.6 and 9.2. The problem is that when the software tries to install, an error message comes up followed by another message stating that he does not have sufficient access privileges to proceed. Obviously, he can run 'classic' software, so it seems to me that the problem has something to do with privileges assigned to software installs by his computer (which is not part of a network). The software itself does not have any such restrictions applied to it. Any suggestions on getting around this problem would be appreciated! As always, thanks in advance.. Greg
Re: Problem with installing downloaded software
Any suggestions on getting around this problem would be appreciated! As always, thanks in advance.. Greg In the brave new world of Mac OS X (based on Unix) each user has their own box in which to play, install software, etc. theoretically without being able to affect other users. This is true even if there's only one user on the machine. So, to install software etc. you need to have what essentially amounts to 'administrator privileges'. If you open the System Preferences App and open the Accounts panel, you'll see a list of all available users. You can grant users administrator privileges from this panel, although ironically you may need to know the administrator password in order to do so. Thanks, Shay

Before you can establish any connectivity, you need to have a number of parts of the connection working. The first part is the hardware layer, are the sync lights on and steady (I'm assuming it has those at this point)? 2. If the sync lights are on and steady, you either connect using PPPoE, or you have an Ethernet over ADSL connection. If it's the latter, does your ISP know your modem's MAC address (this has nothing to do with Macintosh computers, a MAC address is a unique number for each Ethernet device.) 3. If you're not using Ethernet over ADSL, you're likely using PPPoE. Are you using the correct authentication method, you have a choice of PAP or CHAP. If you use the wrong one, it won't work.
