DISCLAIMER: This response is incomplete, from memory and in my experience. Eg. You are on your own :-) On Tue, 2004-06-22 at 22:38, Reg Whitely wrote: The NetGear WG 302 ProSafe WAP seems to meet all the required specifications and has been recommended to me. http://www.netgear.com.au/products/prod_details.asp?prodID=224 I have not used this device. I have downloaded and referred to the data sheet where appropriate. 1 The ability to be configured from MacOS 10.3.4. System requirements suggest Win 98-XP but maybe that is for Resource CD. DLink devices have some issues in this regard. I'll take that in two parts: The data sheet says that it supports secure SSH Telnet, I'm supposing that this means you can telnet to it to configure it, but you'd need to talk to Netgear. It also says that it has SSL remote management login - (albeit in a future firmware revision) - which means you can use a web-browser to talk to it - again, confirm with Netgear. Finally, it supports SNMP, so you can likely also configure it with an SNMP tool. All in all, very likely to be configurable with a Mac. Hmm, just read this paragraph in the specs: · Network Management: - Remote configuration and management through Web browser, SNMP or Telnet with command line interface (CLI) - SNMP management supports SNMP MIB I, MIB II, and 802.11 MIB Yes, your Mac is supported. Your reference to dLink is incorrect. You can configure any of their devices that I am aware of using a web-browser. Their own software runs under Windows only AFAIK, but it is not required at all. 2 Range: It has 2 x 5dBi detachable antennae. I would like it to act as a stand-alone wireless provider for my whole school. Currently an Apple Extreme Base Station cannot quite meet the distance to the extremities of the school - ~40m total Extreme range. We need at least 60 m radius, reliably receiving and sending. Range is a two-way street. If you have 5km range, the other end needs that too! Similarly, if you have 60m radius, the other end also needs to be able to transmit across that distance. In general I've found that lower speeds travel further - some times *much* further with less errors. These days I run my link at its slowest speed, because it's still faster than the satellite down-link. 3 What are your experiences with extension antennae? NetGear offer 2, one being omnidirectional. DLink have quite a few nice models. Are they cross-compatible? DLink's 5km radius is tempting to ping it out to the rest of town... http://www.dlink.com.au/products/wireless/antenna/ant24_1500.htm The biggest issue is one of plug compatibility. I've found that dLink sometimes does weird stuff with their connectors. Ask and find out. But again, a high gain antenna will only help if you have two of them! 4 Does it have capacity to obtain internal IP address via DHCP? This is needed. I can't find this info in the tech specs. Uhm, give out an address via DHCP? I would be very surprised if it didn't, but ask. 5 Is a G4 Dual Processor Xserve running 10.3.4 Server software considered to be a RADIUS server, presumably to enable EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, EAP-PEAP security and authentication, which are DET requirements and which the WG302 supports? A radius server is a server that provides a specific authentication protocol. It has nothing to do with OS or hardware. I suspect that there is radius server software for the Mac, but it is only required to provide authenticated access to the network itself. I'm not sure that you need this, but perhaps the EdDep says otherwise. There are other more minor details but these are the most pertinent now. If you'd like more info on the DET Standards for clarification, please let me know off-line. email hijack?
I'm possibly being paranoid but a few strange things have been happening with my email of late (mail client is outlook express v5.02): 1) I've just started to get spam offering cheap software ( bad spelling) - yes, I know, welcome to the club. The strange thing I noticed today was that the recipient (ie me) was shown as Fred Rivka my email address - I've never used the name Fred Rivka - does that mean that someone with a Fred Rivka alias is messing with my mail or is it just as the result of some email virus somewhere cutting and pasting different names and email addresses together? 2) Quite frequently when I first connect to my ISP and then try and check my email I get an error saying cannot connect - the file name is already in use (I don't remember the exact wording but that's pretty close) I wait a few minutes try again then it works. This has also only started happening fairly recently. 3) Yesterday I decided to add a new sub-folder when I went to the New drop-down menu there were lots of new options which had small brown rectangular icons followed by text which seemed to be related to various internet sites I had visited - very strange - and the menu was not working properly. I quit OE and re-launched it and the extra options had disappeared it all seemed to work again. (Strangeness #2 is still happening though) Any ideas? - is this just OE strangeness indicating corrupted preferences or something - has someone managed to access my email account ( how can I check) - is it some strange virus/spyware Machine is 400MHz G4 Ti powerbook running OS 9.1 Cheers -- Neil R. Your reference to dLink is incorrect. You can configure any of their devices that I am aware of using a web-browser. Their own software runs under Windows only AFAIK, but it is not required at all. Unless you want to do a firmware upgrade and have a version of the firmware that doesn't yet support x-modem firmware upgrades via the console serial port. Then you need a PC. This is probably only relevant if you're buying ancient (ie 2 years old :) secondhand D-Link equipment, otherwise a Mac should be fine. 3 What are your experiences with extension antennae? Good disk deal - going, going ...
WA list members might be interested in chasing the same deal I got this week from Myers. In their electrical departments they sell a few computer bits and pieces including CDRs. At the moment they are discounting these by twenty percent. This means you can pick up a pack of 25 Imation CDR for about $12.62. (You can get an extra 30 cents off this if you present a Coles/Myer share card) Furthermore the packs of 25 have a special-offer sticker in the form of a $10 coded voucher redeemable on any online purchase of recorded media from http://maximusic.com.au You can lump together up to a limit of $50 worth of vouchers. Register the vouchers at http://maximusic.com.au/imation I bought three packs of 25 disks and thus registered online for $30 worth of free merchandise. I ordered a Charlie Parker music CD including postage. ($27.50) This was easily covered with my $30 credit and they can keep the change. They also sell DVDs. There are no catches and you are not required to provide any details other than those necessary for mailing. No credit card details are required unless you want to spend more than the voucher total. The Imation voucher deal finishes on 31 July but the Myer sale much earlier. So be quick. I find the Imation disks very reliable media, much more so than other name brands. iPods and BMW's
Much as I hate to say it, Apple has lost the plot with this. Any technohead who (together with their bank in many cases !) can afford a newish BMW will option the TV/On board computer and/or GPS Navigation. The kit doesn't work with these options or even if a CD changer is fitted. Even if you missed out ticking those boxes, there isn't good integration at all - No track titles - just 5 BMW specific playlists. The BMW Bluetooth phone kit works perfectly and allows selection/dialing from the steering wheel, selection of numbers and names from the TV screen, Caller ID and so on. A lot better integrated than what the iPod kit will. Of course if you want to use iSync and have a BT equipped BMW, there appears only the SE610/630 that works 100% (as far as I know). It could have been so much better... In the US, the cost to have the kit supplied and fitted is US$249 - fairly steep eh ? A company called Dension is working on a new version of the their product named iceLink where you can display the ID3 tags on the Nav screen along with CD cover pictures! - now that may be nice ! I am hoping for this - kills the Apple solution
Deja Vu / Toast 6 Titanium
Hey all, I've been trying to use Deja Vu (included with Toast 6 Titanium) to backup my internal hard drive to an external hard drive. I check 'Perform manual backups' from the options, select my user folder to back up, select the external drive to backup to, hit backup then Toast spends 20 seconds or so thinking, then tells me the backup is complete. When I explore the external drive the only thing on there is an empty user folder, no other items or sub folders. Running 10.3.2 on a Dual 1Ghz G4 768Mb DDR SDRAM. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers!
