ISDN fouled by MacOS 10.4.2
Telstra already recognise this as a widespread problem. They offer the Apple support # 133622, extension Tier 2 Australia. This offered some hope, but when I rang, I was given a rundown on working hours and told they were closed. Looks like a long weekend wait ahead. Background: After installing the MacOS 10.4.2 Update, I couldn't connect by ISDN. I tried the MacOS 10.4.2 Combo, but the result was the same for my G4/800. Vlad James

Importing graphics into PowerPoint 2004 for Mac
Hi, I've decided to give Microsoft PowerPoint a go, even though I would normally avoid it like the plague. Having done all the text for my presentation, I am now inserting the graphics. And there is a problem. All my standard images are (and have for years been) in PDF. However, Microsoft software (unlike every other piece of software on the planet) has never liked using PDF. For instance, when I place my graphics into PowerPoint, all the PDFs are displayed with a (false) white background. The background of the PDF images should be displayed empty (i.e. the underlying objects should show through). Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I have already checked that 'Fill' is set to 'No Fill' in PowerPoint. Transparency is not the answer either.

I found it at this link: http:// www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00054.htm If you have PowerPoint X on your Mac In PowerPoint X, you can simply click the Insert Picture From File button on the Drawing toolbar (or select Insert, Picture, From File from the main menu bar). Then choose your PDF and click OK. Open your PDF in Reader. If you have Reader 5 or earlier Choose the Graphics Select Tool from the toolbar (click and hold the toolbar button to the right of the zoom tool; when the flyout menu appears, click the rightmost button on it). Use the Graphics Select Tool to drag a rectangle surrounding the area of the page you'd like to use in your PowerPoint presentation. Choose Edit, Copy or press Ctrl+C, then switch to PowerPoint and choose Edit, Paste or press Ctrl+V to paste a copy of the selected area of the PDF file into your presentation. If the result is too low-rez, switch back to Reader and without changing anything else, type a higher zoom percentage into the zoom text box at the lower left of the Reader window, then re-do the copy and paste into PowerPoint. If you have Reader 6 Use the snapshot tool (a camera icon with a dotted line around it on the Basic toolbar), drag the crosshairs to draw a box around area you want to copy. The snapshot tool automatically copies the selected area to the clipboard; you can then paste it into PowerPoint. If you want higher resolution, zoom in on the image while it's still selected, then rightclick it and choose Copy Selected Graphic Don't get too frisky with the zoom trick. If you zoom in too close, you can put so much data on the clipboard that it brings your system to its knees. Start at a fairly low zoom setting like 200% and work your way up to a value that works well for you. Cheers, Ronni When Microsoft asks you, Where do you want to go today? Tell them, Apple!

Did you get a reply? I was going to dig out some of my old PageMaker files to see what the format was like, because if the text is simple enough you might be able to extract it (without formatting) using the `strings` utility on the command line. Otherwise, there are probably few people on this list (myself included) who may still have access to PageMaker 5.0, 6.0 and 6.5 if those would be old enough to read your old files.

multifunction device suggestions
Hi all, I am looking at replacing our antique photocopier at work. I was thinking of getting a multifunction device that does: - copying - scanning - printing - maybe fax too All these things are pretty low volume stuff. We also have a laser printer for most printing needs. We are a Mac only place mostly running 10.4. A networkable device would be preferable. Can anyone suggest a brand/product from their own (satisfied) experience? I've been trudging through on-line reviews, but its always nice to hear from a real user! Cheers, Andrew

Re : mulitfunction device suggestions
I'm also using an Epson - Stylus CX5300. It's been great, except for the annoying habit of refusing to print anything if one of the ink cartridges is empty, even if that colour isn't required for the job. Although I guess that's similar across the brands? It does printing, photocopying and scanning. No fax. Epson printers
For what it's worth I support the earlier comments about Epson printers on Mac. I have had three, an SPEX(A3), an SP720 and an SP1290Silver(A3+) as well as a Perfection 3200 Photo scanner and all four devices have worked/are still working hard for some years and performed flawlessly. re external CD burner
For the information of the list. Our old Iomega Zip 650 CD burner has a driver CD for OS8-9 only and the Iomega site has no updates for OSX. Peter Cutrona suggested 'PatchBurn'. I downloaded PatchBurn and started to install it on the iMac just to be told that 10.2.8 can handle the CD burner and doesn't need PatchBurn. Tried it and sure enough it read CDs. I had to load up Toast Titanium 5.1 to get full function. Slow, but it works well. cheers Kev

Quicktime Player Stops After 3 Seconds?
I have a user here with a curious problem (X 10.3.9 / QT 7.0.1) - it seems whenever a browser (Safari / IE) uses Quicktime to play a sound file it plays for 3 seconds and stops. Any ideas? Some audio streams work perfectly yet some stand alone files fail. The files that fail, always fail. Those that work always work. I can't see a pattern though. (Oddly enough as I type one of them just started playing again!) Any suggestions for beating the machine back in to submission? Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. Among them are the iFlea Accessory Kit which includes the iZoom 750x Visual Enlargement Device for viewing the device’s microscopic controls, and the iPic Compression Module for changing settings; the Flea Collar, a Multiple Song Accessory Kit (which can hold up to six iPod Fleas for listening to half a dozen songs); a link to the iTunes Flea Market to download music; the iTic (an external battery for the iPod Flea); a Bluetooth Flea and Tic Device to remotely control them both, and even a Handy Flea Bag (a carry case for the Flea and Tic). MacOS 10.4.2 and ISDN
This message from Apple Discussions pretty well sums up the predicament for ISDN users who have (like me) or might upgrade to MacOS 10.4.2. Happy days, Vlad James Telstra ISDN NT1 Plus II Modem (Australia) and OS 10.4.2 This is a warning for all people (in Australia) who use the Telstra ISDN service and use an Open Networks NT1 Plus II Modem (USB connection). The drivers that enable this modem are supplied by Telstra using an installation disc which utilises an installation wizard. If you upgrade from 10.4.1 to 10.4.2 (using the combined update downloaded from the Apple Website): 1. The Install Wizard will no longer function. 2. Even if you install the modem scripts correctly (by dragging them from the Modem Scripts folder on the installation disc to the Modem Scripts folder in Systm/Library) an inability to connect due to a modem error will occur because 10.4.2 does not support the modem scripts supplied by Telstra. I contacted Telstra about this, and they acknowledged that this problem was associated with the 10.4.2 update. They said that their level 3 technicians were working with Open Networks to provide a solution. No timeline on this as yet. Telstra then instructed me to contact Apple Support to register this issue and to talk with a level 2 technician. I was subsequently informed that, because these are third party modem drivers, Apple doesn't, and never has, offered support for this ISDN system. I have notified Teltra of Apple's response to this and put in an official complaint (against Telstra). Telstra has indicated that they will attempt to engineer a solution. In the meantime, using Archive and Install, I have downgraded my OS to 10.4, then updated it to 10.4.1 (and subsequently regained full functionality of this connection). Bottom line: The present Telstra ISDN service in Australia is not presently supported by OS 10.4.2, do not upgrade to this operating system if you wish retain connectivity. If you have already upgraded to 10.4.2, you will have to downgrade to 10.4.1. to regain connectivity. Once I have resolved this issue for myself, I will submit a posting to that effect. Cheers! Karl
