Hi all,
There's something that's been bugging me since upgrading to Leopard.
When I open a normal Finder window and type something in the search

Well, I was really referring to M$ Office (disputably of course).
iWork doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Office does (not
much else does either) but I think iWork is definitely competitive
with Office because

(a) Pages is now so close to MS Word that the differences comprise a
very short list
(b) while Numbers is still quite a way from Excel in terms of speed
and overall power, it is sufficiently different in its feature list
from Excel that it can be considered to have a different purpose, and
(c) Keynote is already generally considered to be a markedly better
presentation tool than Powerpoint

Of course, iWork does not have any equivalent to Entourage, but in the
market at which iWork is aimed, Apple's own interrelated tools (Mail,
iCal, Addressbook, etc) more than fill the bill anyway.

Re: Search Window

2009-03-15 Thread Travis Hansen
OK, I figured it out.
This is how to change cmd-f to Find by Name (by default), and
cmd-shift-f to Find by Content.
This is just a clarification of Francine Schwieder's post that Ronni
referred to.

Goto System Prefs-KeyboardMouse-Keyboard Shortcuts.
Click +
Change the application to Finder
Type Find… in Menu Title - IMPORTANT: the 3 dots are the ellipsis
character (option+;) not 3 full stops
Make the Keyboard Shortcut cmd-shift-f
Click Add and check in the Finder's File menu that the shortcut has changed.

Go back to Keyboard Shortcuts and repeat the steps but this time the
Menu Title is Find by Name… and the shortcut cmd-f.
IMPORTANT: The Menu Titles are case sensitive and have to be exact to work.

Now in the Finder's File menu, Find… has changed to Find by Name…

This is just what I wanted. Thx WAMUG!

Cheers
Travis

iPhone Syncing

2009-03-15 Thread Adrian Skehan
I have been looking at the iPhone and the more I look the more
confusing the whole deal gets. My impression is that Telstra and
Optus present information on their deals in such a way that you cant
make a meaningful comparison, their contractual information is
presented in very long paragraphs with no spacing and very tiny print,
Optus are the masters of this having one of their paragraphs
approximately 1,500 words long, in pail grey print that is so small
you need a magnifying glass to read it which makes it unreadable. I'm
starting to feel sore in the backside already and I haven't even
touched one yet.

If I can get past all the above, a couple of things the iPhone users
may clear up for me are:

1.	As a low end user is there any particular advantage in going for
the 16Gb as opposed to the 8Gb.

2.	Is syncing your Calendar, Photos and Music demanding on the amount
of download you use. Bearing in mind that none of them change very
often.

3.	With only a 2 Mega pixel camera, is the quality sufficient to print
up to 8 x 10 photos.

4. And is battery life reasonable.

Sorry if the questions are a bit open ended but I have to start
somewhere.

I'm a low end user and have used just over half the capacity of my
16Gb iPhone. If I had to, I suppose I could par it down to less than
8Gb. They say the new iPhones on the horizon will be 16Gb and 32Gb
anyway.

2.	Is syncing your Calendar, Photos and Music demanding on the
amount of download you use. Bearing in mind that none of them change

Syncing is strictly by cable between your computer and the iPhone it
doesn't use any of your download quota

3.	With only a 2 Mega pixel camera, is the quality sufficient to
print up to 8 x 10 photos.

2Mb is sufficient for an 8 x 6 at 200 dpi. I suppose you could push it
to 10 x 8. The main limitation is the camera. It is acceptable in
quality, just... Don't expect the same quality as a DSLR

4. And is battery life reasonable.

Since upgrade 2.2 battery life has been significantly improved.

Unlike my previous mobiles when I had to specifically go and charge it
I use the iPhone differently. When I sinc to computer every 2 days
(ish) it gets charged, when I use my iPhone as a hands free iPod
music player in my car it gets charged. For these reasons I don't find
I need to specially charge it as often.

it to 10 x 8. The main limitation is the camera. It is acceptable
in quality, just... Don't expect the same quality as a DSLR

4. And is battery life reasonable.

Since upgrade 2.2 battery life has been significantly improved.

Unlike my previous mobiles when I had to specifically go and charge
it I use the iPhone differently. When I sinc to computer every 2
days (ish) it gets charged, when I use my iPhone as a hands free
iPod music player in my car it gets charged. For these reasons I
don't find I need to specially charge it as often.

However I use my iPhone far more often then I used my old mobile
because it does so much more.

Sorry if the questions are a bit open ended but I have to start
somewhere.

Regards,

Adrian

You might also find this useful:

It compares all iPhone 3G plans available in Australia in an
understandable spreadsheet, so you're not wading through websites
trying to take notes about key features of different plans.

Appointment Book Software?

2009-03-15 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

Can anybody recommend some software to replace our appointment book? I would
like to be able to schedule appointments for several people at our office.
It needs to be multi-user capable, and it would be great if it could handle
double bookings. I can't seem to find anything suitable.

I would prefer not to use a Filemaker-based solution.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Ta,

Andrew

Re: Appointment Book Software?

2009-03-15 Thread Eugene

Hi Andrew,

why not use iCal. It has the ability to publish calendars
automatically to the whole group. You can send reminders, invitations,
add attachments etc.

Either use a MobileMe account or use a WebDav server to host the
calendar(s)

  Eugene

on the bludge again

2009-03-15 Thread KEVIN Lock

Hi,

I have a few more iMacs ready for distribution to needy people, but
unfortunately I am short of a few keyboards and mice.

If anyone on the list has some spare USB boards and even the old puck
mice, I would be most grateful. I contacted Winthrop Technologies
and they have just dumped a stack of such gear.

I have some PC boards and whilst they do work, they lack the extra
USB ports needed when a printer, keyboard and mouse is attached.

Thanks for any help.

Sorry that I can't help. Wish I could. What is more I don't think
you are a bludger - you seem to be a busy bloke doing things all the
time. However, you do sponge off us from time to time, for a good
cause, so you're OK you old B..d.
