I have compared all Mail preferences with Mail on another Mac

Also as I said , I strated another User and it was OK , preferences

I must have a damaged file somewhere in the specific USER .

Hi Bob,

I have never experienced this.
The only other thing I can think for you to check is in Mail - under
Format Style Styles - click Favorite Styles,

do you have Default Left aligned, Spacing 1.0x?

Definitely sounds like something wrong in your User Account settings.
You don't experience double line spacing in any other Apple
Application, TextEdit for example, do you?

Hi Bob

I know you said you deleted the Mail preferences, but did you also try
removing the following files as well:-
Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost
(take out com.apple.blahblahblahblah.plist) It will be a long file name.
And
Users/yourname/Library/Caches/
Take out folder com.apple.mail

Throw them on the Desktop and restart then see if it still happens.
Also, do you have any different Fonts in your Users/yourname/Library/Fonts
folder that isn't in the other user. Could be picking up a corrupt font
there if you have some as well, that not in the other user when you create
it. Try temporarily removing them as well.

Worth a shot :)

Re: can't open iPhoto

2009-06-30 Thread F.W. Hänel

Thanks Ronni,

The removal of the plist file did not rectify the situation. Then I
went into rebuilding the iPhoto library.

During this process the progress box states Loading Photo Library
After approx. 6 min the original alert You can't open etc. returns.
Can I change the Open with option to Preview in order to see whether
the photos are still actually in the

iPhoto library or what would you suggest ?

Thanks

Ok Walter,

If you do have to Rebuild your iPhoto Library, you will require
approx. 20GB free space leaving you only 8GB left on your HD.

Before we think about whether it will be worth updating iPhoto to
perhaps iPhoto 6 or iPhoto 7 ('08) (as you don't have a very large
HD).
First I would like to get your current iPhoto Library functioning if
we can.

Please do this and let me know the result.
1. Quit iPhoto (if it is open)
2. Go to Home Library Preferences Folder and find
com.apple.iPhoto.plist
4. Drag the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file to the Trash (don't empty
the trash just yet)

5. Open iPhoto

If it works, DON'T do my next instruction:

If you still get the same error message, QUIT iPhoto and then try to
rebuild the Library.
1. Rebuild the photo database by starting iPhoto while holding the
shift+option keys.
2. Don't release them until you're prompted to confirm the intent to
rebuild.

3. Click Yes, then click Save.

Hi Walter,

1. iPhoto 2.0.1 with this iPhoto Library was working on this iBook

GOOD QUESTION. I CAN'T SAY THAT THERE WERE ANY EVENTS.
When you first received the message You can't open your current
iPhoto library using this version of iPhoto etc, what had you
done recently to your computer or iPhoto?
AGAIN, I'M NOT AWARE OF ANY ACTIVITIES AFFECTING iPHOTO OR
ANYTHING ELSE.

2. Your iPhoto Library is 9.3GB in size, is this the size it was
before you encountered this problem?
I NEVER CHECKED THE SIZE OF THE iPHOTO LIBRARY BEFORE - I DON'T
KNOW.
3. How much FREE space do you have on the iBook's HD? To rebuild
your iPhoto Library you need free space equal to the size of your
current iPhoto Library, otherwise the rebuild will not complete.

28GB OF THE 60GB ARE AVAILABLE.
4. Do you have a backup of your iPhoto Library on an external
drive or disk?
NO - I TRIED TO PLACE A COPY ON THE EXT. HD BUT IT ONLY WENT TO
THE PREPARING TO ETC. STAGE AND THE NEXT MORNING
IT WAS STILL ONLY PREPARING AND I COULD NOT SHUT THE IBOOK DOWN,
I HAD TO TURN IT OFF WITH THE POWER SWITCH.
Why you are unable to install iLife 04 is because you cannot
install an older version over a newer version. You already
have iPhoto version 2.0.1, the Install disc will be version 2.0.
You can install a newer version of iLife, i.e iLife 05, 06, 08, or
iLife 09 (if your iBook meets the specifications).

I TRIED ILIFE 09 BUT IT REFUSED BECAUSE ITS NOT ON LEOPARD.
I have iLife 05, 06, 08, which I no longer require if you want I
could post to you.

IF YOU THINK THAT WOULD RESOLVE THE SITUATION I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT.

Thanks,

Walter

although the installation went through all the
normal steps and was apparently successful I could not find
iPhoto or iLife 04 not even searching in spotlight.
The iBook only shows one 9.3GB iPhoto library in home /
pictures. I can try to find the original installation
disc that came with the iBook - if iPhoto is on that one and
install iPhoto from that disc. Should I do that ?

Photo libraries from other iPhoto versions have never been

come via software update from Apple were installed.

2. When you say you Have trashed iPhoto from the applications
and installed iPhoto again (Version 2.0.1) from another G4 iMac.

How did you install iPhoto 2.0.1 from the G4 iMac?
Looking back through the WAMUG Archives, doesn't your G4 iMac
have Leopard installed on it? iPhoto 2.0.1 is not compatible
with Leopard.

iPhoto 2 is different to newer versions of iPhoto and needs to
be installed from the Restore Disks that came with your computer.

You can't just drag the Application from another computer.

3. In your Home folder Pictures, do you have only ONE iPhoto

Re: can't open iPhoto

2009-06-30 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Walter

You can't open the iPhoto Library with another application like Preview I'm
afraid. It basically belongs to iPhoto. If it's still the same size as
before there's a very good chance it's all still there.

The major issue as I see it, is that the iPhoto Library belongs to a newer
version of iPhoto then version 2.
If you don't have an external drive, or finding that it's not backing up,
I'd be hesitant to try anything else without getting it looked it.
Sometimes with these things, the more you play around with it trying to fix
it, the more chance it can get worse, or something can get lost.

Once it's backed up successfully, then iPhoto can be looked at and tweaked
if needed to get it all working again.

Hope that information helps.

Anyone know of freeware to delete duplicate email addresses ?

2009-06-30 Thread Steven Knowles
I have a text document full of email addresses, maybe 5,000 of them,

I came across eMail Extractor, but before I go down that route and

does anyone know of alternative freeware which will do the same job?

Or if someone has it already I could email the document through if

Hi Bob

I know you said you deleted the Mail preferences, but did you also
try

removing the following files as well:-
Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ByHost
(take out com.apple.blahblahblahblah.plist) It will be a long file
name.

And
Users/yourname/Library/Caches/
Take out folder com.apple.mail

Throw them on the Desktop and restart then see if it still happens.
Also, do you have any different Fonts in your Users/yourname/
Library/Fonts
folder that isn't in the other user. Could be picking up a
corrupt font
there if you have some as well, that not in the other user when
you create

it. Try temporarily removing them as well.

Worth a shot :)

Re: Anyone know of freeware to delete duplicate email addresses ?

2009-06-30 Thread Andrew Bignell

Steven

You could this in a spreadsheet like Excel or Apple's Numbers. The
trick is after opening or importing the text doc, is to sort them by
the email address field and then add a formula in a new column that
tests to see if the email in the cell directly above is the same (the
first cell will be empty). If it's the same (duplicate) the formula
returns the value of 1, and 0 if false. Now you have to sort all the
columns on this new column and all the 1's will be the duplicates. BUT
before you do this, you have to convert the column from a formula to
just the value of 1 or 0 FIRST. To do this Edit-Copy and then Edit-
Paste Special and choose Values.

I have attached an excel doc (sent direct to your email only) with a
sample formula for you to work with, but if you get stuck I can do it
for you (but I know it is email address i.e personal data) but I
thought I would offer any way. Duplicate the text doc before you start
and work on the copy, just in case.

Re: can't open iPhoto

Hi Walter,

As Daniel has already said you can only open iPhoto Library by using
the iPhoto Application.
Somehow the iPhoto Library you are trying to open does not belong to
the iPhoto Application you are using to open it.

I would suggest you don't play around with this anymore as you don't

all of your photos.
As you don't have a backup of this iPhoto Library and I cannot

you contact Daniel to drop your iBook to him so he can see where the
problem lies and fix it for you.

I will contact Daniel as well and see if I can arrange to give him one
of my iLife version discs that I no longer require.

Point of fact Ronni - specifications for iWork '09 are 10.5.6 OR
10.4.11 if you're still running Tiger. iWork '09 is running quite
happily (albeit a little slowly) under Tiger on G4 computers (going
back to the old table lamp iMacs) across the network of one of my
clients.

Of course, it runs much better on the Intel/Leopard machines, but
that's only to be expected :-)

My bad there Peter ... sorry ;-(
Am I correct in my assumption below?

As far as I understand, 32 bit code will still execute on 10.6.
It's just that you'll get better performance with 10.6, regardless
of whether or not the application has been written to take
advantage of multiple cores.

Yes, I think sums it up, from my understanding. The main advantage of
64-bit is that you get access to far more memory than 32-bit. Of
course, the limiting factor is the amount of RAM your computer is
physically capable of using. Mac OS X has been 64 bit compliant for
some time, but we are only just now seeing mainstream consumer
products capable of using more than 4Gb of RAM, the limit of 32-bit
addressing. The new Macbook Pros can all accept 8 Gb of RAM. The main
increase in performance here, in the short term at least, will be
seen in the reduced use of virtual RAM, where the system has to use
areas of the hard drive instead of built-in RAM under large loads.

I don't know how Windows 7 works, but I know that with Windows Vista
you have to chose between 32-bit Vista and 64-bit Vista, and software
does have to specifically written for 64-bit Vista to take advantage
of it. As I understand it, Leopard and its underlying foundations
contains not such constraints (especially with Cocoa-based software),
and Snow Leopard will take it to the next level.

Inkjet Printer

My Epson Stylus C61 has given 7 years of good service but has reached
a point where it needs maintenance beyond my capabilities. Cleaning

A discussion of colour laser printers occurred on the List in about
January 2008 but further exploration of that choice tells me that
quality photos can not be produced for a machine under $1000 where as
inkjets can.

An Epson inkjet would be my first choice and a likely product

identified feed problems. Anyone had good performances from other
Epson photo quality printers, or an alternative Brand?
