Time Machine

2009-12-11 Thread Bob Jackson

Every time I connect an external drive, to do a SuperDuper backup, a
splash screen comes up asking whether I want to use Time Machine. My
answer is always no. How can I turn off this annoying behaviour?

Re: Uprade from 10.4.11

2009-12-11 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Laura,

By Cleaned up your Mac, I mean uninstall any old applications that you no
longer use and are not compatible with Snow Leopard.

The critical factor for you is to be sure that any software you rely on works
properly in Snow Leopard.
Mainstream software in its latest versions is all fine (e.g., MS Office 2008,
Adobe CS4).
With your Applications you need to check if updates are available compatible
with Snow Leopard.

Also the Printer you use, check that there are drivers for Snow Leopard.
Check here to see if your Printer is listed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669

Check here: Mac OS X v10.6: About incompatible software:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258

I have to rush to Perth now and will not be back to my computer until tomorrow.
If you require more assistance tonight, others might help you.

Cheers,
Ronni

 Hi Laura,

I take it you have read all the WAMUG emails on upgrading to Snow Leopard and
you have cleaned up your Mac updated all your third party applications
Add On's / plugins and checked they are compatible with Snow Leopard.

I've certainly being reading emails about upgrading but don't know about
cleaning up my Mac nor updating third party applications etc etc.

If you have, and you have decided which Upgrade Install you are going to do,
you should not experience any problems.
If you haven't done the preparation, you install at your own risk!

I didn't know there was a choice of upgrade. All that seems available to me
is what is in the Mac Box Set

Go into System Profiler (under the Apple Symbol - About this Mac, then click
 on More Info).
Under Software, click on Applications. This will give you a list of all
 applications on your Mac.
This list will also show which kind of binary the app runs under: PowerPC,
 Intel, or Universal.

If Kind is PowerPC, you're going to need to update that application if you
want to continue to run it in Snow Leopard without installing Rosetta.

I've done that and there are many PowerPC among all the Universal and Intel.
Most of these I'm not even sure what they are for and can't imagine they
would be missed. There are a few exceptions which I would need to retain i.e.

Epson Scan settings and Epson Scanner Monitor
 Java plug in settings
 Silverkeeper (used for back up)

Then there is Word and all its applications, all PowerPC. I would happily
remove Word from my MacBook and use Open Office but not sure if I would lose
documents etc in that process, nor do I know how to uninstall Word.

Note that if you have a program like Photoshop CS installed, it will count
droplets as individual applications, so this list will be much longer and
 potentially more confusing.)
You can use that application's built-in software updater to check for updates.

 I don't have Photoshop.

If you have done the preparation and decided on which Upgrade Install you are
 going to do.
 1. Automatic Upgrade:
The Snow Leopard installer’s single upgrade method attempts to make the
transition as simple as possible by leaving almost all your files,
applications, and settings in place. The installer simply replaces all the
components of your old Mac OS X installation with their Snow Leopard
equivalents, and it deletes those that are obsolete.
It contains a list of software known to be incompatible with the new
operating system, and when you run the installer, as long as you have an
active Internet connection, it even checks for new additions to the list.
Software that’s on the list is moved safely aside into an Incompatible
 Software folder.

That sounds a bit more comforting!

 DO TAKE NOTE though:
The installer doesn't disable all software that’s incompatible with Snow
Leopard—only software that loads automatically on startup and that runs in
the background, such as drivers and other kernel extensions. Ordinary
applications (such as those in the /Applications folder), which you must run
manually, are never disabled, even if they couldn’t possibly run under Snow
 Leopard.

That is why you are wiser to check for problems before installing, rather

Anyway I ran the Verify Disk and this time the result was very

Verifying volume on Intel iMac HD

G'day Pedro.

I've still still got my old PC and use it quite regularly for dedicated Windows
thingys. It's also good for getting the heart pumping under higher blood
pressure and exercising the vocal chords plus plenty of quiet time waiting,
waiting, waiting...

Anyhow, both still receive email. My iMac is set to delete from the server
after 1 day whilst my PC is still set to delete immediately (must change that
one day!)

I go through Mailwasher on the PC to scan emails and sort junk, etc before it
opens up Outlook and downloads what I want. Any email downloads will only
happen when I hit the Send/Receive button (or whatever it's called). I've
always had this setup. When I first got my iMac last year, I downloaded emails
to both. The iMac is set to automatically download from my main account (and
delete from the server after 1 day) and manually from both my email accounts.
The PC is still set to download manually but deletes from the server
immediately.

Having said that, I haven't used the PC to download email for ages. However,
it's a good emergency tool (which I may be using next week when my iMac is
going to be looked at for possible repair - thank goodness for Applecare --
they are very helpful, spent over two hours on the phone with them today - but
that's another story).

So in summary answer to your question. My PC and iMac do it so it is possible.

Oh, and my email is POP with Internode.

Enjoy the new 27.

Hi Pedro, I have the following settings in Mail on my MacBook (and other Macs):

To set up I go to Prefences, add a new email account, then choose IMAP instead

incoming server: smtp.iinet.net.au

Re: Uprade from 10.4.11

2009-12-11 Thread Laura Webb

Hi Ronni

Many thanks for your help.

I think I've done as much cleaning up as I can. Apart from Word and
all its components, the only Power PC applications remaining are:-

Epson Scan settings
Epson Scanner Monitor
Heredis
Silver Keeper (will replace with Super Duper)
Java 1.4.2

I have concerns about the EPSON printer which I believe is the same
model as you have TX700W and which you helped me set up. It works so
beautifully printing and scanning wirelessly. I would hate this to be
upset. Although not specifically mentioned in the list of drivers
for Snow Leopard I'm assuming the Artisan 700 listed would cover the
TX700W.

The genie program Heredis is, I believe, not compatible with Snow
Leopard. I am aware of Reunion 9 for Mac but given that family
history is currently on the back burner for me I can't justify the
cost of Reunion. Heredis is now more a repository for numerous
records acquired over many years so I probably need, for the time
being, to move its content to a disk.

So, perhaps I am almost ready to take the plunge?

Laura

Mainstream software in its latest versions is all fine (e.g., MS

Hi Laura,

I take it you have read all the WAMUG emails on upgrading to Snow
Leopard and you have cleaned up your Mac updated all your third
party applications Add On's / plugins and checked they are
compatible with Snow Leopard.

I've certainly being reading emails about upgrading but don't know
about cleaning up my Mac nor updating third party applications
etc etc.

If you have, and you have decided which Upgrade Install you are
going to do, you should not experience any problems.

If you haven't done the preparation, you install at your own risk!

I didn't know there was a choice of upgrade. All that seems
available to me is what is in the Mac Box Set

Go into System Profiler (under the Apple Symbol - About this Mac,
then click on More Info).
Under Software, click on Applications. This will give you a list of
all applications on your Mac.
This list will also show which kind of binary the app runs under:
PowerPC, Intel, or Universal.

If Kind is PowerPC, you're going to need to update that
application if you want to continue to run it in Snow Leopard
without installing Rosetta.

I've done that and there are many PowerPC among all the Universal
and Intel. Most of these I'm not even sure what they are for and
can't imagine they would be missed. There are a few exceptions
which I would need to retain i.e.

Epson Scan settings and Epson Scanner Monitor
Java plug in settings
Silverkeeper (used for back up)

Then there is Word and all its applications, all PowerPC. I would
happily remove Word from my MacBook and use Open Office but not
sure if I would lose documents etc in that process, nor do I know
how to uninstall Word.

Note that if you have a program like Photoshop CS installed, it
will count droplets as individual applications, so this list will
be much longer and potentially more confusing.)
You can use that application's built-in software updater to check
for updates.

I don't have Photoshop.

If you have done the preparation and decided on which Upgrade
Install you are going to do.

Re: Uprade from 10.4.11

2009-12-11 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Laura.

I'm back home! Warm drive down the freeway from Perth today with the top down
on Tigger. Had to go a little over the speed limit ... Only kidding, I never
speed ;-)

OK Laura, it sounds like you are ready to do the Upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Don't worry about Heridis or any other PowerPC apps you still have on your Mac.
Snow Leopard install will place anything that is NOT compatible into a
Incompatible Softwarefolder.
Snow Leopard will just automatically disable any plug-ins that will not run in
Snow Leopard.

For your TX700W Multi Function Network Printer . After you have installed Snow
Leopard and go into System Preferences Print Fax to Add your EPSON SP
TX700W Series ... make sure you select the Epson Drivers version 8.07 ( NOT
Gutenprint v5.2.3).
You might get a notice from Apple's Software Update that there are Epson
print drivers available for Snow Leopard, if so just download and install.

If you find you are still unable to print, just go into System Preferences
Print Fax, right-click (Control-Click), on the printer, click on reset
printer system, clearing out the printers, and then choose add the TX700W
printer.

If you have a current backup, I think you are ready to do the Automatic
Upgrade.
Just take your time, follow the instructions exactly and you won't go wrong.
1. Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon. A
window appears with just two buttons: Utilities and Continue. Click Continue.
2. After you select your destination disk, you get two options - Default or
Customize the Installation.
I went Customize BUT, you should GO WITH THE DEFAULT. It's the option most
people choose.
3. Click the Install button, when the alert asks if you are sure you want to
install Mac OS X, click INSTALL again, then Enter your Administrator user name
and password.
4. Click OK and away you go :o)

NOTE: Partway through the installation process, your Mac restarts from the DVD
(and then later restarts again from your main disk), but all this normally
requires no intervention.
While the installation completes, don't use your Mac for anything else, just
let Snow Leopard Installation do it's thing!

When the installation is finished, a Restart button appears—but if you don’t
happen to be paying attention at the time, your Mac restarts by itself after 30
seconds—this time under Snow Leopard. The first time you use Snow Leopard, a
program called Mac OS X Setup Assistant runs. You’ll know that’s what’s
happening when you see the animated “Welcome” message and hear the music
playing. Because you performed an automated upgrade, you needn’t manually enter
information in Setup Assistant (which you had to do with older Mac OS X
installers, and which you still must do in an Erase and Install upgrade).
On the Thank You screen, click Continue to quit Setup Assistant and begin using
Snow Leopard.

Cheers,
Ronni
