Re: 27 iMac Screen going black but not sleeping
That was my initial thought too David but no, not the screen blanking/turning off to save energy. There is no way to get the screen to display again as usually would be with energy saver. Using the serial number, their computer records showed that the item was registered to me. I don't know if this is standard policy or a one-off polite Apple rep., but your friend could give the store a call and check. As for the black screen, I seem to remember that there was some discontent surrounding the iMac display some years back. I don't recall the details of the problem but I believe Apple issued a firmware fix. Does your friend have the latest firmware? How to check for, and clean out dust I often have to clean dust out of various computers (including my Mac Pro) by blowing or vacuuming but it is best to determine where the dust is built up so you draw the dust out of the build up rather than forcing it further in. And of course these iMacs are not easy to get into. It is still under apple care (just) and he is hoping to make use of that but is not yet sure if he can find the original receipt. Key logging software on some Android phones
A so-called researcher has found key logging software on an HTC Android phone. The key logger cannot be disabled and is on automatically -- there is neither opt-in or opt-out options and one of the key logger's processes is hidden from the running process list. Every single phone keypad key-press is recorded as is every URL entered into the browser, even if the browser is using Google secure search mode. The users position is also reported even if the user has opted out of the location service. I am not sure how widespread this software is or which carriers are involved but the article says the software is on millions of phones. It is also not clear yet if anyone is receiving this information but it is certainly in the log on the phone. Here is a 17 minute video which I watched in its entirety because it interests me, but you may want to skip to the middle where he shows the key logging in action http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/11/secret-software-logging-video This is a bit of a black eye for the open-is-better Android bunch where rather than open software what they are really running is a version that their carrier has tampered with and they have not even been aware of this. If the carrier had done a slightly better job of covering its track, not even the researcher would have noticed. Re: Key logging software on some Android phones
Addendum to my previous post. The carrier involved is CarrierIQ (I previously thought that was the name of the software) and the information is being sent to the CarrierIQ servers! Re: Backup has stopped working ???
Hi Stephen, Are you receiving any error? I never used Backup when on MobileMe but you perhaps could try: Log out of MobileMe, Restart your Mac, log back in and see if the problem continues. If not, go to http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme/ Select +Backup iChat,+ then Backup, then try the +Express Lane+ link at the bottom. Also if you have a very large backup Plan (over 4 GB)? Can you divide it into smaller plans? Apple does not recommend exceeding 1 GB for backups to iDisk, although sometimes they do work. See the second point under *I can't perform a backup to my iDisk* here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1716 Sent from Ronni's iPad On 30/11/2011, at 9:25 PM, Stephen Chape chap...@bigpond.com wrote: No Peder .. perhaps I should try that !! Toast 8 or 9
Hi team, I have a pensioner friend who is on a G4 (thank you Kevin Lock) he has messed things up a bit, to the point where Applejack won't sort it out. I will try get around that maybe with a reinstall. The real issue is I can't load Toast 8 on to his G4 as my copy is damaged. I've tried to find it on the net but no luck. He wants to transfer his cassettes to disc of course you can do that with CD Spin Dr in Toast 8 (maybe even 9 will run on 10.4.11?) Does any one have an old disc of Toast Titanium 8 (or 9 if it works)? Or any suggestions as to how to get Toast on to his machine?
