Hi Muggers My plan with phone is finally coming to an end this month, and Im thinking of going smart phone for once!! Im really keen on the iphone and am wondering if there is a possibility of a new iphone soon - maybe number 5? Does anyone know when? Are there any other smartphones I should consider, as some people have mentioned the Samsung Galaxy as one pretty good phone I wouldnt have a clue Thanks for any advice Chris Christopher L.K. Recently CNET said: …the iPhone 5 is a “complete redesign. This is a very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited.” http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/iphone-5-not-4s-was-steve-jobs-final-project-50005666/ The iPhone 5 release date rumour mill is up and running. According so some, iPhone 5 release date would be in year 2012, but the exact release date of iPhone 5 is not yet known. Does anyone know when? No, no-one knows when the iPhone 5 will be released, there are always plenty of rumours out there, and plenty saying that it will be released in late 2012 … but they are ONLY rumours. You won’t know when it is to be released until Apple announce a release date! The same applies to the release date of the iPad 3, that will ‘possibly’ be released in 2012. Personally, I do expect the iPhone 5 iPad 3 to be released in 2012 … but when in 2012? I think the iPad 3 will be released before the iPhone 5. Are there any other smartphones I should consider, as some people have mentioned the Samsung Galaxy as one pretty good phone I’m sure you would know my answer to this question Chris … the iPhone is by far the most advanced Smart Phone available! The iPhone 4S (which I have) and iOS5 is a great phone and operating system. Re: iphone
Hi Chris, I would strongly recommend the iPhone over the Samsung Galaxy or any other smartphone. Like all Apple products the finish and the design of the hardware is astounding, and the software is superbly designed. Add to that the so-called ecosystem that has been built around the iPhone (iTunes, App Store, Siri, Mac OS X) and it has a clear lead. Have a glance at this article to get an idea of the satisfaction rating that of the owners of iPhone 4S accord it: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/12/01/iphone_4s_is_apples_most_popular_phone_yet_with_96_satisfaction_rate.html If you want a very quick analogy the Galaxy is Windows (complete with viruses and software bugs -- not just in the analogy but in actuality) and the iPhone is Mac OS. As for the release date of the iPhone 5, I agree entirely that no-one really knows -- at this point probably not even Tim Cook as I am sure there are software and hardware hurdles to overcome yet, but my guess would be a year after the release of the iPhone 4s. That is in the northern summer. Whilst they're out there Malcolm, I'd ask them to run an antenna point to every room that you think you might ever have a TV in. Might save paying another call out fee later. Hi Mac, just a general point, if you now only use a digital TV, of course you will not need one of the old-style antennas with wide bars -- as far as I know, they are only needed for analogue TV. Hi Guys As usual, your replies and answers to my questions are just so useful and informative. Thankyou very much to everyone. The one question I wont even contemplate in future is the 'when will it be released', as I now agree with all of you..nobody knows! In regard to the iPhone 4S, I dont know what 'Siri' is and havnt heard of it before? Is it best to buy a phone outright then use a plan, or is it worthwhile to get the phone with the plan. We have just rung someone at telstra who was absolutely no help at all. The local shop in Busso sells the 4S but there is a waiting list. The Telstra website on the other hand does show a huge range of phones, however, even though 'Apple Phones' appears as a category in the Browse Phones page, it comes up with nothing found!! As I live in the bush near Dunsborough, I need a phone with a strong receiving capability, something that Telstra calls 'Blue Tick' phones, as the reception here is variable, and more so inside my house (my present Telstra Tough T90 is blue tick) and signals just drop out sometimes, so I have to go outside! Re: iphone
Hi Chris, You can find out all about the iPhone 4S here: http://www.apple.com/au/iphone/ SIRI is my Personal Assistant and she keeps me organised much better than I organise myself ;-) Siri is the intelligent personal assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. It allows you to use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. But Siri isn’t like traditional voice recognition software that requires you to remember keywords and speak specific commands. Siri understands your natural speech, and it asks you questions if it needs more information to complete a task. Siri uses the processing power of the dual-core A5 chip in iPhone 4S, and it uses 3G and Wi-Fi networks to communicate rapidly with Apple’s data centers. So it can quickly understand what you say and what you’re asking for, then quickly return a response. http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri.html http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri-faq.html Telstra has the best Mobile Coverage, that is why I have always stuck with Telstra… certainly not because of price ;-) You can buy the phone unlocked from Apple, and then get a plan through Telstra or another Telco. http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone I don’t know why you are unable to find anything about iPhone 4S on Telstra website? http://telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/iphone/ Freedom Connect Plans: http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/plans/freedom-connect-plans.cfm Or you might want a Business Plan. Re: TV antennas
sorry to interfere here: Hi Mac, just a general point, if you now only use a digital TV, of course you will not need one of the old-style antennas with wide bars -- as far as I know, they are only needed for analogue TV. this statement is wrond! you need a better antenna then for analog quite often with booster, reason: 1) less power on transmitter 2) digital tv is more sensitive to interferences 3) digital tv is within the same frequency range as the old analog (180 to 700 mhz) i normally suggest the second or largest antenna, in many cases in the metro the houses are on a down hill side pointing to the beach thus less reception.. your antenna should point toward kalamunda morley areas, eg in the Girrawheen area i had to fit the largest available antenna (vhf uhf combo) plus a 30db booster, since that installation the customer has now perfact dtv reception on 3 tvs in the house if you move house then check if there is a optical cable connection, you may have dtv on that one. in the Clarkson area i found a dtv connection within the optical box for the phone internet, the signal was strong enough to feed 3 tvs through a passiv 4way splitter James SAD Technic U3 6 Chalkley Pl Bayswater WA Australia +618 9370 5307 mob 0414 421132 (international +614 14421132) sad...@iinet.net.au http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~saddas/ Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. Re: TV antennas
OK, I stand corrected. But I was not suggesting that a poorer antenna was as good, only that the wide bars on the old antennas were not needed -- I was under the impression that the bar lengths were a reflection of the signal wavelengths to be collected, and that if you were using only digital TV (broadcast on higher frequency, shorter wavelength) and no longer needed analogue (longer wavelength), you did not still need a wide-bar antenna. But I'm pretty ignorant in this area, I only wanted to comment that a user should check if they still needed analogue (some parts of WA are still without a digital signal). Re: TV antennas
hello David ch7 9 are in the 190mhz range thus you still need the longer rods, just fitting an sbs type yagi antenna may reduce the reception quality of the commercial channels, it is correct that the bar length has to match the frequency for good reception James SAD Technic U3 6 Chalkley Pl Bayswater WA Australia +618 9370 5307 mob 0414 421132 (international +614 14421132) sad...@iinet.net.au http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~saddas/ Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. Re: TV antennas
Hmmm Very interesting - and I wouldn't want to argue with your facts - however, it doesn't really reflect my experience. I only have the rabbit ears type indoor antenna and analogue reception was (to be expected) poor/hard work so I was expecting to NEED an external antenna when I went digital. However, to my surprise I can get digital OK :o) Tuning the antenna is trickier since the digital looks perfect until it doesn't - that is the picture starts to pixellate and/or the sound drops in/out. My method, since the analogue digital come from the same transmitter, is to switch the TV to analogue and play with the aerial until I get the best picture (still pretty bad/snowy on SBS) and then switch back to digital and watch my perfect picture. - its then OK till the next time somebody knock the antenna ;o( I do realise it would be better to get a good external aerial (one of these days) but I certainly find, even with my poor antenna, that digital reception is much better than analogue. Note: this is in Albany with just SBS and ABC digital channels - they are just about to FINALLY give us commercial digital channels (not that I've missed them really) so it will be interesting to see in the experience still holds.
