Have you looked at Memory Maps and access to Hema maps through them. It has
the advantage that you can trial maps for a short while for evaluation, the
app is free but there is a charge for maps.

Re: map app

2014-02-01 Thread Tim Law
Rod I use Memory-Map on my iPad 1 connected to an external GPS receiver made by
Bad Elf. It's powered in series with the iPad. Later iPads have built in GPS I
believe.

The iPad sits on the jesus bar in front of of the passenger held in place with
big bulldog clips.

I downloaded AusTopo 250k for free with Memory-Map and this is quite adequate
for all the offroad adventures I've ever done, and there's been a few. 250k
resolution is the same as the GeoSciences series of maps that many people use
with OziExplorer.

The map takes 470mb of space.

The downside is that MM don't have an Apple app to connect with the mobile
device. To get around this I use Crossover on my Mac, an emulator programme, to
run the MM software with very little drain on my Mac resources..

Once the map is loaded, and any tracks and waypoints you might like to have, it
works fine on the iPad. I find I never need the extensive capacity of
OziExplorer which doesn't run on the iPad anyway.

Yes. This area needs lots of research.

I found that printed HEMA maps weren't good enough. WikiCamps is a
cool app for finding camping sites, but it uses Apple maps, and

I did some research in December, and came across ExplorOz's

However, the requirements aren't clear. After paying $90-100 for
the maps, I found I needed an app for them, and these are mainly
  PC-based.

They allowed me to swap my purchase for the Memory Map version.
This is pretty good. It shows you where you are, but doesn't tell
you how far you are from the next place you're going to.

If anyone knows of a better iPad solution with Exploroz maps,I'd

All these 'off-road' maps use GPS to make their calculations. They use a
geocalibrated map in combination with the device's GPS to show where you are.
If you mark a waypoint on the map at the destination, it should tell you,
somewhere, how far it is. But it will alwAys be direct point to point, and not
follow the road, track etc

If you want this feature then you need a turn by turn mapping app such as
Sygic, tomtom, etc. these are generally setup for city and major routes, not
navigating tracks off road

I found Sygic works on the iPad without 3G connection, if I recall, but nice
features like search, what's around, etc need the internet to work.

ExplorOz is a good site for keeping up with what's around for remote travel,
including mapping, but I've not yet seen a 'perfect Mac supported system' that
suits iPad users, which there are many. We all want it cheap too!

Hema make good maps with plenty of extra details. I always carry the good
spiral bound 'Roads and TrAcks Western Australia' by QPA as it has 250k and
500k mapping, in conjunction with the electronic mapping. The latter shows me
where I am, the former provides the bigger picture of where I am going.

Re: map app

2014-02-01 Thread Rob Phillips

Hi Tim

I wasn't clear. I didn't want a turn by turn solution as I was
following the old telegraph line from Cocklebiddy to Israelite Bay! :-)

But I did want to know if the next turn off on the map was 200m away or
2km! A direct distance mechanism would be great, or even an indication
of map scale at the given zoom level, like WikiCamps does. Memory Map
doesn't seem to be doing this.

And yes - the QPA maps are good, except for the odd inaccuracy.

Cheers
Rob

found I needed an app for them, and these are mainly PC-based.

They allowed me to swap my purchase for the Memory Map version. This
is pretty good. It shows you where you are, but doesn't tell you how
/far/ you are from the next place you're going to.

If anyone knows of a better iPad solution with Exploroz maps,I'd love
to hear it.

Cheers

I downloaded AusTopo 250k for free with Memory-Map and this is
quite adequate for all the offroad adventures I've ever done, and
there's been a few. 250k resolution is the same as the GeoSciences
series of maps that many people use with OziExplorer.

The map takes 470mb of space.

The downside is that MM don't have an Apple app to connect with the
mobile device. To get around this I use Crossover on my Mac, an
emulator programme, to run the MM software with very little drain
on my Mac resources..

Once the map is loaded, and any tracks and waypoints you might like
to have, it works fine on the iPad. I find I never need the
extensive capacity of OziExplorer which doesn't run on the iPad anyway.

I would be interested in how much disc space it requires on the

And TomTom didn't work there!! Shameful :-)

You're right, that would be a good feature to have.

I, rather the passenger, has to follow the map on the screen and identify
where to turn. We did this well as we scratched our way north of Koolyanobbing
to Menzies via the Helena and Aurora ranges and north of there. Was this a
detour around a fallen tree or the real track???

All good fun in the end.

The best combo I've come up with is Memory Map app and my map of choice, the
free AusTopo 250k. Not a perfect solution but I've grown used to it.

 I wasn't clear. I didn't want a turn by turn solution as I was

But I did want to know if the next turn off on the map was 200m away or 2km!
A direct distance mechanism would be great, or even an indication of map
scale at the given zoom level, like WikiCamps does. Memory Map doesn't seem
 to be doing this.

And yes - the QPA maps are good, except for the odd inaccuracy.

All these 'off-road' maps use GPS to make their calculations. They use a
geocalibrated map in combination with the device's GPS to show where you
are. If you mark a waypoint on the map at the destination, it should tell
you, somewhere, how far it is. But it will alwAys be direct point to point,
and not follow the road, track etc

If you want this feature then you need a turn by turn mapping app such as
Sygic, tomtom, etc. these are generally setup for city and major routes, not
 navigating tracks off road

I found Sygic works on the iPad without 3G connection, if I recall, but nice
features like search, what's around, etc need the internet to work.

ExplorOz is a good site for keeping up with what's around for remote travel,
including mapping, but I've not yet seen a 'perfect Mac supported system'
that suits iPad users, which there are many. We all want it cheap too!

Hema make good maps with plenty of extra details. I always carry the good
spiral bound 'Roads and TrAcks Western Australia' by QPA as it has 250k and
500k mapping, in conjunction with the electronic mapping. The latter
shows me where I am, the former provides the bigger picture of where I am
 going.

Hi Ronni

I have not yet updated to Mavericks as before I left there were apparently
still problems. I did a search on the mailing list but did not find
anything that indicated a specific fix or update.

So it looks like the only way will be to upgrade and see, I was not even
aware that Mavericks had been updated. I was away for a long time, doing
wine tours in Australia and the US, good stuff if you have the time!

What issues are you referring to?

Are you having issues with Exchange Servers with Mavericks Mail?
Or Gmail's unconventional IMAP implementation with Mavericks Mail?

Are you already running OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 and have installed the Mail
Update for Mavericks?

Hi Paul,

Mavericks OS X 10.9 has had an Update to Mail plus an update to OS X 10.9.1

If you make sure you do the Preparation before upgrading to Mavericks and then
follow the 'Installing After Installation completes' as below you should not
experience problems.

First thing to do is:

Get your Mac ready for Mavericks OS X 10.9

INSTALLING MAVERICKS OS X 10.9
DON’T FORGET TO BACKUP FIRST:

1. Backup your system BEFORE installing
2. Repair Permissions before installing
3. Turn OFF Time Machine in System Preferences
4. Unmount Disconnect any External USB Firewire Drives /TimeMachine
5. Download the Mavericks OS X 10.9 upgrade app from the Mac App Store.
6. Run the Mavericks OS X 10.9 upgrade app to Install Mavericks
** Apple warning for installing Updates:
Do not interrupt the installation process once you have started to update your
system.

What to do after installation of Lion-Mountain Lion-or Mavericks completes and
your Mac restarts
Spotlight

1. In most cases, as soon as Lion or Mountain Lion or Mavericks starts up the
first time, Spotlight begins indexing (or re-indexing) all the files on all
mounted volumes.
This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending
on how many files you have and the speed of your CPU and disk.

During this time, you’ll notice a lot of disk activity (along with, perhaps,
somewhat sluggish overall performance), and you’ll see a pulsing dot in the
center of Spotlight’s magnifying glass icon on the right side of your menu bar.
(Clicking this icon during indexing displays an estimate of the time remaining
for each volume.)

Software Update

2. After Spotlight has finished indexing the Volume: Run Software Update
The next thing you should do is to update Mac OS X itself (and any other
crucial Apple software) to the latest version. Sometimes Apple releases bug
fixes and security updates almost immediately after a major upgrade, and if any
such urgent updates are available, it’s in your best interest to install them
right away.

Shortly after your Mac starts up under Lion or Mountain Lion for the first
time, Software Update should run automatically; if it finds updated software,
it displays an alert “Software updates are available for your computer..”

If Software Update does not run, choose Apple  Software Update. Software
Update checks if a newer version of Mac OS X (or any of the software installed
with it) is available—and if so, offers to download and install it.

Repair Permissions

3. Repair Permissions

Let Apple Applications Update their Databases

4. Open Apple Mail from the Applications folder and let it update the Mail
Database

5. Open iPhoto from the Applications folder and let it update the iPhoto
Database

6. Open iTunes from the Applications folder and let it update the database

Ronni
