Hi Stephen

I went onto something else and when I went back to calendar I touched the space
bar and it all came back so panic over for now. I had hit the space bar before
many times before, as well as other keys, so I don’t know why it worked this
time

I don’t use iCloud but it sounds like a good idea to at least park my calendar
there in case it happens again. It was very scary and worrying when it happened

I presume it’s backed up both on Time machine and Carbon Copy Cloner but I was
hoping someone could tell me how to get the data back from a backup. Presumably
the data is kept somewhere

It is probably old age and it’s not the latest software but is it likely to

Is there something I should be doing on a regular basis or that I can do now to

Re: Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-12 Thread Allen Gladwell
Hi Ronni

Then that is what I will do next. Presumably the re-install will clean up the
system side but how much cruft will there be in my Home folder particularly the
~Library?

Is there any way to avoid bringing some of cruft in my Home folder back from
a backup without extensive knowledge which I don't have?

Regards Allen

 Hi Allen,

Yes, an Erase Install of Snow Leopard would be very sensible, there are
problems on your current system, most possible brought over from previous
upgrades. As I have mentioned before on WAMUG, left over Clutter from
previous systems can slow your Mac down and also cause problems.
Over time, your disk accumulates obsolete, extraneous, or otherwise useless
files, often called “cruft”—hacker slang for digital detritus. Removing cruft
increases the disk space available for the system and reduces the chance of
 software conflicts.
I erased my Hard Drive and did a 'Clean Install' of Lion, and have not
experienced any problems in Lion or now Mountain Lion (which I did just an
 upgrade install).

A clean system installation brings the system software back to the standard
configuration. This is necessary when system software is unusable or has been
modified, preventing a normal installation. It is also useful as a final step
 in troubleshooting.

Options to Erase and Install and Archive and Install are no longer
present in the Mac OS X 10.6 installer. This was done for convenience, so
that users do not accidentally erase and install their Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
 partitions.
However, Erase and Install remains available through Disk Utility, which is
also included on the installation DVD.

After you select your language and click the right arrow, an Install Mac OS
X screen, this is where you diverge from Apple's standard upgrade script and
erase your disk. Choose Utilities Disk Utility.
I would also Repair the Drive also before installing SL.
If you need details how to preform the Erase and then installation of SL,
 post back.

 Point 1:
Your TM backups and any other current backups will contain whatever is
causing your problems. So you will have to be careful what you 'bring across
from any backup'. First just bring across essential Data. Also installing any
applications you require from the backup is much safer than dragging the
applications across to a clean install.

 Point 2:
After the erase and install of SL, download the Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Combo.
 Snow Leopard 10.6.8: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
(Note: there's a separate Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Supplemental Update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429 that is not included in the 10.6.8
 combo.)

It’s likely to have come bundled with another third-party system modfication
 that depends on it.
If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous

The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly

SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

Is it possible to go back to an earlier version of Safari if so is it worth a

Earlier when you suggested removing third-party add-ons that was just for
Safari wasn't it? That wouldn't include recently downloaded aps like Skitch and
mSecure which I am reluctant to un-install

Re: Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-09 Thread Allen Gladwell
Good morning Ronni

Right click on the toolbar does bring down a Customize Toolbar menu and
clicking on that has the same effect as in View ie no drop-down menu and the
tools disabled

I repaired permissions before, in between and after the OS 10.6.8 Combo and
Supplemental installations
Software Update has only a Canon printer update which I think I will leave
until this is resolved

I cannot see any reference to 32 bit in Safari Get Info

I bought mSecure 2 weeks ago and is 3.1.2.

One problem with all this is I have no idea when it happened since I rarely
touch the toolbar once it is set up. Although something is obviously wrong it
does not seem to affect my normal operations. It works perfectly in Mail.

Thanks for all your help Allen

Do you have another Administrator User Account on your MacBook Pro?
If not I would like you to create another User Account so we can see if it
is system related or just related to your User Account.

If Safari works properly in another user account, reinstalling it would not
 solve your problem.

 So, if Safari does work properly in another account;
Please boot in Safe Mode, Log in as yourself, launch Safari, and test...
 Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)

To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:

 1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
 2. Press the power button.
 3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The
Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but
 not before the tone.
 4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress
indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

During startup in Mac OS X v10.6.8, you will see Safe Boot on the login
 window

Let me know how you get on please Allen.

Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-07 Thread Allen Gladwell
Hi All

I have a problem with my safari toolbar (Safari 5.1.7 - MacBk Pro 2 Core Duo
- OS 10.6.8)

I cannot customise the toolbar. When go to View and click on Customize Toolbar
nothing happens ie no drop down menu to rearrange the icons. I don't know when
this happened since I don't do it often. I have restarted twice but it still
doesn't work

In addition if I then click on View-Customize Toolbar I find that the icons in
the toolbar have stop working until I stop safari and reload it from the dock
and they are working again

I'd be grateful for any suggestions

Thanks Allen

Unsupported third-party add-ons may add features to Safari or change its

Use the add-on's uninstaller, if possible

 Quit Safari.
Remove any unsupported third-party add-ons you've installed (see if the

 Manually uninstall third-party add-ons

If the software doesn't have an uninstall feature, quit Safari and try
manually removing the third-party add-on files. These files are usually
installed in one or more of the following locations:

 Hello WAMUGers,

If you are thinking you ‘might’ want to upgrade to Lion OS X 10.7 at some
stage, I have prepared a tutorial PDF “Prepare For Lion”; which might be of
 assistance.

The tutorial explains what you need to do to get your Mac ready for Lion. How
to check if your Mac can run Lion, the amount of RAM free Hard Drive space
required, and application ‘kind’ that will work in Lion. How to ‘clean up
your computer’ and the correct way to install Lion.

I have not had time to do much testing of my ‘Lion' which I have installed on
 an external FW Drive.
I’ve played around looking at the interface and where everything is placed
and if everything works, but have not done any serious work in Lion.

There are certain things I like about Lion, but not everything. It is a
different operating system to Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8.
Lion is ‘Using gestures’ and is similar to the iOS (the operating system on
 iPad / iPhone).
 • Multi-touch gestures
 • App Store
 • App Home screens
 • Full screen apps
 • Auto save
 • Apps resume when launched

Just a few of Lion’s features: The Mac App Store, a new way to discover,
install and automatically update desktop apps; Launchpad, a new home for all
of your Mac apps; system-wide support for full screen apps; and Mission
Control, which unifies Exposé, Dashboard, Spaces and full screen apps into an
innovative new view of everything running on your Mac, and allows you to
 instantly navigate anywhere.

Lion brings many of the best ideas from iPad back to the Mac, plus some
fresh new ones like Mission Control”

I won’t be putting Lion on my work machine for a while yet. There are certain
things I just don’t like about Lion ;-)
But guess eventually I will have to get used to it, as it is the way Apple is
 moving forward.

you can download the PDF ‘Prepare For Lion’.

Time Machine question

2011-07-22 Thread Allen Gladwell

My daughter's MacBook Pro has just failed and it will be a week or so before it
can up and running again. Meanwhile she needs to access some files and an
email from her Time Machine backup

Could somebody tell me please how to access these files, if it's possible,
using my MBP? We are both using 10.6.7

Can I, for instance, stop my Time Machine running and disconnect my TM HD. If I
then make an a/c for my daughter would she be able to access her Time Machine
if it is connected to my computer?

Cheers Allen

Re: Time Machine question

2011-07-22 Thread Allen Gladwell
Thanks Carlo that's very helpful. I did look in the help files and didn't find
anything useful. I will use your suggestions when my daughter comes over
tomorrow

Thank you Allen

 Hi Allen,

Yes you can access all Time Machine backups either manually, (without using
the Time Machine animated interface) or from within the Time Machine
 interface.

To access a Time Machine backup manually:

Caution is required here: do not delete or modify any file manually. You may
corrupt the backup. Take a copy any file you wish to work on and work on the
 copy.

 1) In Finder navigate to the disk containing the Time Machine backup and
connect if necessary so you can browse the disk.
 2) Find a file named computer name.sparsebundle. For instance if you
computer is called Fred, there will be a file named fred.sparsebundle.
 3) Double click on this file so as to mount the sparse bundle. This process
may take some minutes and often involves the operating system scanning the
 sparse bundle for layout errors.
 4) You will now see a newly mounted file system named Time Machine Backups.
This file system is a collection of many Time Machine backups stored by date
and time. Navigate down to the required file. For example:
Time Machine Backups Backups.backupd Fred 2011-07-11-113337 Fred
 Users Fred Documents my file.pages

To access a Time Machine backup from the interface:

 1) Control-click on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, or Option-click on the
Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar, and select
   Browse Other Backup Disks...
Then just follow the prompts to mount any visible Time Machine Backup.

 Cheers,
 Carlo

Re: Scanners

2010-01-04 Thread Allen Gladwell

Hi David

We bought an Epsom V500 last year from H.N. for about $450 and it does
an excellent job on slides and old colour and b/w photos (we haven't
tried negatives yet) and it comes with a host of different sized
holders. The ICE software that comes with it does a really good job
of cleaning up scratches, dust marks and colour blemishes.

It is quite slow if you use the highest definition scanning

Go to File ‘Save As’ and download the PDF to your desktop.
Open the PDF in Preview Application. The PDF can be opened in Adobe

Double clicking the PDF in Finder will open it in the default

Re: Macbook battery

Hi Chris

I'm afraid a replacement battery is not automatic inside a 3 year
warranty. Apple may well claim normal wear and tear as the 300 cycles
is not guaranteed. Mine had 226 cycles and I had to buy a new one.
Needless to say it only has 5 on it now as I am more aware. Still its
worth a try
