Re: Push from iCloud (photos)
Hi all, Just a follow up as promised. Everything is working as it should. PhoneView did a superb job of retrieving all my photos from various devices when iPhoto wouldn't recognise them. The only downside is that the album structure hasn't been retained and there are a number of duplicates due to the same image being stored at different resolutions on different devices. PhoneView itself allowed me to not import any images of identical size and nomenclature, etc. Unfortunately I still don't know the actual cause of iPhoto's inability to access the images, so I can't offer up any specific advice to anyone suffering similar problems. Cheers! Hi Ronni, Prior to my data loss on my iMac and iMac backup last month both my iPad and iPhone were set to iCloud backup, and remain so, and everything functioned as you, Carlo and Daniel describe below. My issues at the moment: Given the data loss I've experienced on my iMac, I'm very keen to repopulate it with the photos from both my iPhone and iPad. I tend not to delete photos on either device unless I'm short of space, so I've a fairly decent backup between the both of them. iPhoto on the iMac is currently recognising a limited number of photos in the photo stream as compared to both my iOS devices. As my understanding was that the photo stream was a shared resource I'm unclear as to why each device is showing a different number of photos available. It also hasn't recognised any of the albums set up on both iOS devices. The photo stream on all devices are also showing photos far older than 30 days Duplicate photos have appeared, sometimes three or four copies of each once I had tried the initial re-sync when my hard drive was replaced. iMac photostream = 294 photos iPhone photostream = 844 photos iPhoto on the iPad photo stream = 482 photos iPad photo stream = 482 photos I have only one iTunes account. You can then sync any photos you want to carry around to your iOS device. For example, you can create an album in iPhoto, and then, in iTunes, make sure your iOS device is configured to sync that album. However, if you don’t regularly use a Mac or PC that’s set up for iCloud, you should take the precaution of reviewing your Photo Stream photos every week or two and saving those that you want to keep in your Camera Roll (if they’re not already there) or another album. If you do also want to save Photo Stream photos to the camera roll on an iPhone or an iPad there is a bit of clicking involved but with the correct sequence you can reduce the click count to around one click per photo, and seeing there is a maximum of 100 photos in Photo Stream that is not too onerous. For an iPad, for instance, you can proceed as follows 1. Open up the Photos app and select the Photo Stream tab at the top of the page. 2. Click the share button. Its icon is a square with a curved arrow exiting up and to the right. 3. Click each photo of interest, or in your case all the photos. As you touch each a check mark will appear on it. 4. Click the Save button to save the selected photos to Camera Roll. I'll post some thoughts later on your Photo Stream mismatch. I have seen something similar but not as extreme as in your case. Hi everyone, Last month I had a massive technological failure resulting in the loss of my main drive and backups. Data recovery hasn't gone that well so I'm in the process of rebuilding everything I need. At the moment the only record of my photos exists in iCloud and in the camera rolls and folders of my iPhone and iMac. Re: Ominous iMac Ticking.
Just wanted to post something of a resolution in case anyone else has similar problems. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to eject the drive properly. The sequence of events: 1. iMac hard drive makes ticking noise, machine becomes unresponsive. 2. Boot into safe mode, run disk utility, identify and repair errors on iMac HD. 3. Immediately back up system via Time Machine to external WD MyBook for Mac. 4. Following day iMac is again unresponsive, no ticking just the grey apple logo screen. 5. Call AppleCare, try to run through diagnostics but can never move past logo screen. 6. Apple organise for the drive to be replaced on site. 7. On attempting a Time Machine restore, back up drive fails to mount. The drive has been with Dr Kerr this last week but sadly recovery hasn't been possible. It looks like that perhaps a surge made it past the Belkin surge protector taking out both drives and as of yesterday, my modem. Or it's just an unfortunate coincidence. Apple have been kind enough to replace items that weren't in the cloud (mostly movies) and my iPad has all my photos, though I can't seem to push them back into the photo stream and access them on the iMac. I do have to say that for the parts of the cloud that worked, they worked seamlessly. All up it's heading towards $3,000 to replace everything, with no guarantee of recovering everything/anything. Once everything is up and running again I'll be adding Crashplan to my backup strategy. Stolen iPhone Advice
Hi all, Sadly my partner has had her iPhone stolen in transit to the US. She was in Auckland for a couple of hours and had her phone and wallet stolen, and the airline lost her baggage(!). As she was also travelling with a toddler who had just done a Perth - Auckland flight and some security guards who didn't seem interested in helping her out, she wasn't able to report it to the police while she was still in Auckland. The phone's passcode protection was active at the time and we've already blocked the telephone account and removed my credit card data from iTunes. Is there anything else I should be doing? It's not likely we'll see the phone again, but should we be concerned about the data on the phone? How hard is it to break through the passcode protection? Cheers! iTunes store across different zones.
Hi all, I've slowly been converting my family over to Apple, and it seems I've had some luck with my partner's family as well. Her dad has just bought a new Mac and he's been asking my advice about accessing the iTunes store in different countries as he splits his time between Indonesia and Australia and would like the ability to purchase from the store in both countries. My understanding is that he'll need two separate iTunes Store accounts, one for each country. Is it the case that your ability to purchase from a particular store depends on you having a valid billing address for that country, and that you can switch accounts within iTunes? Or will he be able to access the Australian store from Indonesia providing he has a valid Australian account? Does anyone have any experience or advice around this? Cheers! Re: DVD region
In addition, DVD players currently sold in Australia (and for the past 18-24 months or so) must be multiregional. I'm not aware of being able to detect region coding by looking at the disc itself, but if it's a legitimate (store bought movie / tv series / music etc.) DVD on the back cover of the case down the bottom along with the copyright information, running time and such, there's a tiny icon of a globe with a number in it which indicates which region it's from. As Jude says, the actual video format will be more of a hassle than the region coding these days. Again, most modern DVD players account automatically for PAL and NTSC without the user being aware of the difference, but some older televisions won't display them properly. Cheers! Callum The region code won't be inserted unless you do it on purpose. It's really a form of copyright protection that is used to control when and where things are released. You may need to think about PAL vs NTSC though, unless he is going to play the DVD on his computer. cheers Jude Is a DVD that I burn from my DVD recorder a Region 4? Likewise, what region comes out of iDVD or Toast 8 and my G5? Is there a way to look into a disk and find the region? The only way I can think of is by forcing a region change in my computer and see what reads, but no way for that? Arises from request to send an off- air recording made here(region 4 probably) to a friend in Canada (region 1). Re: Monitor distress
The darkness is growing rapidly. I think I should probably turn the monitor off and disconnect it. But then, How will I start up the computer next time, because the start button is on the monitor? I do have 2 monitors. The second one is one from the PC world. Will the start button on that take over the job of starting the computer if the first one is removed? When I got the blinking monitor lights it turned out that the backlight for the bottom half of the screen had blown / gone / ceased to function. It's noticeably darker than the top half. I've been living with it for about 6 months now (out of warranty, and no spare cash) and nothing too severe seems to have happened apart from the irritating blinking light and maybe a little eyestrain from the incongruously lit screen. Using G4 tower dual 1 GHz, OSX 10.4.6 Cheers, Callum

Howdy all, Mail has spontaneously stopped displaying messages in my Inbox, all other folders seem to be unaffected. Currently Mail is telling me I have 0 messages in my inbox, 58 unread. iTunes Australia
Howdy, Thought this might be of interest to some, from http:// www.themusic.com.au TUNING OUT? The launch of iTunes Australia is rumoured to be about five weeks away. But will consumers be able to buy tracks from Delta Goodrem, Offspring, Kelly Clarkson and other Sony BMG artists? Perhaps not, if the Japanese experience is any guide. iTunes Japan launched last Thursday with about a million tracks available - but none from Sony. In Japan, Sony runs its own online service, Mora, which has about 150,000 tracks available in a proprietary Sony- only format. What will happen here? I can't comment, says Bony Australia's Emmanuel Candi. Sony's decision could see it frozen out of the automotive audio market: in a separate announcement, Apple says Nissan, Mazda and Daihatsu have agreed to build iPod compatible stereos into their 2006 Japanese cars. Meanwhile, a new study by Sydney academic Alex Malik finds chart hits are hard to legitimately obtain online. Many songs including three in the national top 10, and this week's top two songs) were actually unavailable as paid downloads from the two largest suppliers of digital downloads, Malik says. ABC: FREE MP3 ABC radio's posh network, Radio National, is giving away free downloads. The MP3s are of live performances by acts including Ben Lee, Laura Veirs and Gelbison, recorded for the network's daily arts and music show The Deep End (weekdays, 2.20pm). RN's Nick Bron says the downloads are plain-vanilla, non-DRM encumbered MP3s. No strings attached, he says. Some of the artists/rights holders have restricted the amount of time for our usage of the material, but as we have a policy of only having six sessions up as MP3s at any one time, this won't be a problem. As new material is made available, older sessions will be removed from the website. All of this will be well within the rights period granted. Most artists will be available for download for about six weeks after the on-air broadcast. We are trying to keep some popular ones up for longer, Ben Lee for instance. Each show includes an interview as well as a live performance. Coming up: Marcus Teague (ex-Deloris) and Micah P Hinson. The free music downloads are part of RN's podcast program; visit abc.net.au/rn/arts/deepend for more information. Cheers! Callum

When you go to select the music 'Sample Music' is available, but 'no iTunes Music Library' is greyed out. Click the Finder icon in the Dock, and choose Go Go to Folder. Type ~/Music/iTunes or ~/Documents/iTunes and click Go. Drag the iTunes Music Library.xml file to your desktop. Open iTunes and create a new playlist by choosing File New Playlist. Quit iTunes and open iPhoto to make sure you can see your iTunes library when creating a slideshow. But to no avail. Any ideas? Clicking Drive of Doom
I have a 120Gb Htiachi Deskstar hard drive (my main drive) that started making a terrible clicking sound then a clunk last night. I immediately shut down, thinking it might have been the heat and tried starting up later with no luck, just the clicking noise and failure to recognise the drive. The machine just wouldn't start. Now, I do have backups, but I'd really like to get hold of the stuff I was working on at the time this happened (I'm four weeks away from a national tour with the band and thus feverishly working away). Anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? Is it worth taking the drive into my local Apple Store / Apple repairer, or will I need to go to a data recovery company? Any help or advice you can offer would me very much appreciated. Cheers! Callum Prior

Canon i865 CD-R Printing
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this printer, I picked one up yesterday but am yet to get the direct printing to cd feature working using the CD Label Print application that came with the printer. Here's what I have: Dual 1Ghz G4, 768Mb DDR SDRAM running 10.3.3 Here's the situation: It won't print using the cd tray. But it prints fine regular A4 pages. When you turn the power off on the printer, the tray ejects, so I'm assuming that mechanism is ok. I've installed the i865 v2.32 driver from the canon site. Select Paper is set to CD Label Print Standard CD (12cm) Paper Size CD-R tray. When you hit Print the following happens: Print label sheet window opens. Printable Label 'all' selected. Hit print in this window. An alert appears Select [Quality Media] from the pop-up menu of Print dialog box and then selct printable disc (recommended) or printable disc (other) in [Media Type] that matches your selection which I do. Then I select print from this window. Another dialog box appears Printing to a printable disc will begin. Set the CD-R tray guide on the printer and insert a CD-R tray with a printable disc into the CD-R Tray Guide. Press the RESUME button on the printer before clicking ok to start printing, which I do. Yet another dialog box appears, similar to the last one (this time from the print utility itself), I select stop job from that window, select the job, and click resume. It then attempts to open the printer connection, this continues for a couple of minutes until i get a job stopped message, with no sign of life from the printer. I've checked and rechecked the tray itself, and as far as I can work out, I've done everything as per the manual. Also contacted Canon support who were (sadly) completely useless, and as yet haven't returned my calls. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers! Callum

I've trashed the preferences of the offending applications as it's happened, used the disk utility and DiskWarrior but the problem still persists. It's really making working quite difficult. MySQL Databases Dreamweaver
Ok, Seems Onno pointed me in the right direction earlier :) I now have my first MySql database setup with one table (CD Library), two fields (cdartist_ID and cdtitle_ID) and three records (Alex Lloyd, Augie March, Amos - Tori). Given that this is my first time with PHP/Apache/MySql, I'm attempting what I hope's the relatively simple task of a catalogue of my CDs which I can put up on my site. However. The database seems to be working swimmingly, there's just the three records at the moment, and I'm presently trying to get Dreamweaver to connect to the database. On filling out all the details in Dreamweaver I've been getting the message There is no testing server running on the server machine. There's currently no password set for the root user, although I've managed to set up a separate secure user with privileges limited to Select, Update, Insert and Delete. Just hoping someone can point me in the direction of where I should be looking for problems? Cheers, Callum (For reference, I'm now working through the second half of the Macworld tutorial which can be found in the December 2002 issue pg 66-68. Part one, which covers the setup of Apache, MySql and PHP is in the November 2002 issue pg 60-65)
Re: MySQL Databases
Within the phpMyAdmin directory is a file called config.inc.php. within it lay the default username and password pairs. Also you may wish to actually run the command line MySQL utilities first to ascertain if your installation was successful. Cheers for that Onno, Unfortunately as far as I can tell I've done both. What I've done (and I never thought I'd say this): From the terminal window ./bin/mysql -u root -p And at the mysql prompt show databases Wherein I get two listings mysql and test, which as far as I can tell from the article means all's well and good. In regards to the config.in.php file I've done the following: Changed $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = '' To $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = 'http://localhost/~myusername/phpmyadmin/'; Where ~myusername is my username. Changed $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'config'; To $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'http'; The user string is set to 'root' and I've entered my password on the password string. But when I go to http://localhost/~myusername/phpmyadmin/index.php (again, where myusername is my user name) it won't accept my chosen password/username combination. Of course. I don't understand anything I've just said. :) Just though it might be a lark to learn something new/extend my ability with Dreamweaver. It's my first time using the terminal/php/mysql. As at the time of writing this I haven't been able to access http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/mysql to check the documentation to see if I could work it out for myself. Cheers! Callum
MySQL Databases
Howdy, I've been trying to follow the tutorial in Australian Macworld (November 2002) in setting up Apache / MySQL / PHP. I'm up to the stage (page 63) where you begin building a new MySQL database but I can't seem to get it to recognise my password/username combination when trying to access http://localhost/~username/phpmyadmin/index.php (and yes I've replace ~username with my username :) ) I get a Wrong username/password. Access denied message. Given this is my first attempt using these, I'm not too sure where to look for the problem, or what information I should be providing for someone to help me. Cheers, Callum

I can find plenty of resources on using DreamWeaver with Access, but having trouble locating those that use FileMaker. Basically what I¹m interested in finding out is: *How to set up a database with the specific intention of using it for a website. *How to use that with DreamWeaver What I want to use it for is archiving on the website a catalogue of articles, reviews, discography etc for the band. If anyone can point me to any resources that might be useful, or might be available to run me through the process, I¹d much appreciate it. Cheers! I've had a look through the archives to no avail, same with the Entourage online help. I understand it's possible to do when starting up entourage for the first time / when you initially make the move, but what I'm after is the ability to import these old Outlook messages into a pre-existing Entourage account (with 1-2,000 messages stored away). My concern is that if I try to Import into Entourage at this stage, the current messages will be replaced. Just hoping someone might be able to offer some advice. Cheers! Callum

TechTool Pro
Howdy all, Just acquired a copy of TechTool Pro (3.0.5) as I haven't previously had any kind of maintenance / preventative software and I've been experiencing problems that Disk First Aid hasn't been able to deal with. It's fixed up a whole bunch of minor problems, but there's three that have left me not knowing how to proceed. First, when running a check on System Files, the following error is reported: Mac OS ROM : Failed With the suggestion I should replace it, but I'm not too sure how. And secondly, when running a check on Volume Structure: Extents File : Failed Invalid Leaf Node (2,4344) Allocation file : Failed Bitmap mismatch (22,3136) Neither of which I've been able to find more information on, with TechTool suggesting I recover the files and reinitialize the drive, but again, I'm not to clear on how to do so, or what the consequences of that might be. I'm running OS 8.6 on a G4 400, 384 MB Ram. Cheers, Callum Prior
Umax Astra 2000U Scanner
Howdy, My scanner's gone a bit funny in that all it's started doing is scanning bands of colour like so: http://www.fourthfloorcollapse.com/scanner.gif (a segment of what it's scanning). When I preview the image / photo to be scanned all I'm getting is those bands of colour. Any ideas? I've had no luck searching the archives / UMAX Site. Cheers, Callum
