Clearly Craig you need to send some blood with that apology.
To those that want to flog Craig reflect on this: Reading the Wamug
website there is nothing there that says sending an email to the
group notifying them of an impending event is punishable by public
flogging. Also there seems to be no mechanism for contacting
committee members via the website, though there is a tab for up
coming events...
For those of us who don't live and die by everything apple this list
is how I stay informed of Mac issues etc. Craig's 'welcome' really
just turns me off contributing.
Craig, I'll be wandering in for a look and a chat. All the best with
your new venture.

Why don't we cut him a little slack and just give him more details

corporate sponsorship works.

Just my 2c worth!

Re: Mac's at Educational Prices

2006-04-25 Thread Lindsay Adams

Hi Natas

If you read the bottom of the email there is a statement Thank you for
making apple the #1 in education notebook sales.

From this statement you have to agree there must be some dollars to be
made through the educational area. As a lecturer to medical students
who are constantly asking me about my G4 powerbook and what is it like
to use an apple I know there is lots of interest in the product from
the PC crowd. I show them the ease of use and the great graphic
rendering that is possible. The next question is about price and so we
talk about Apples education pricing and next question where to go and
talk someone about a Macs.

Now if you are a supplier and you limit access of a product to your own
store (Apple online) then you are penalising the competition (Local
Apple care centres). This is very similar to what Telstra is being
pursued for by the ACC with respect to telephone line rental and
wholesaling of phone lines. The result being that the local Apple
centre has to refer the customer to the online store for the purchase
of the product at the educational price. A price that they cannot
match. I'd be pretty sure that the local Apple centre would not be
getting a kickback for the referral (Maybe one of the local Apple
centre guys could comment on this)

In the end it comes down to taking money away from our local Apple
support centres and putting it in Steve Jobs back pocket. All I see
this doing is screwing down/ screwing up the survival of the local
Apple centres, which we all rely on; Just getting a little bit
Microsoftish IMHO.

Replying to my own email, from what I can find out, it seems that:
Quote:
In most cases, older DiskWarrior 3 CDs cannot start up newer
machines

because they do not have the necessary System files. To start up the
newest PowerBook models released at the end of October 2005, you
need a

DiskWarrior CD with a more current operating system.

An Update CD (revision 39) with the latest startup System (Mac OS X
10.4.x Tiger) and DiskWarrior 3.0.3 is available for order by
calling
our Sales Department at 800-257-6381 (US Toll Free) or at
281-353-4090

(International). The cost for the Update CD is US$12.95 plus US$7.95
shipping handling fees.

Finally, if you purchased DiskWarrior within the last 30 days, we
will

send you an updated CD for the price of shipping.

Seems odd to me that they are offering free upgrade software to
people with older versions of DW (ie. pre-3.0.3) But if you are
people who bought 3.0.3 specifically to work with Tiger, then bought
a new Mac and found that DW no longer worked with Tiger - you have
to pay for a replacement.

End of Quote:

Has anyone with a New PowerBook managed to startup from their
DiskWarrior 3.0.3 CD?

It is an ongoing argument I have with Diskwarrior and Australian
distributor - PICA software. When purchasing a brand spanken machine
you must purchase the upgrade CD for this machine from PICA at $25
each time unless of course it is within the prescribed 30 days for
which I have found is bogus here in Australia. Version you purchase
has to be able to start-up your machine, then you can go for the
online update even though an older version will update to latest
being 39 bad luck have to purchase an upgrade CD for current
machines.

This is an email response, one of many from PICA earlier in the year..

Hi Rob,

I can understand your frustration, however this has always been the
procedure with Diskwarrior. It is unfortunate that the disk was just
purchased, however revision 36 did not begin shipping until Feb 14th,
however I would have expected the reseller to have the revision prior
to this. It may be worth discussing the situation with them to see if
they can come up with an appropriate solution.

Once revision 36 is obtained this will boot your PowerBook, minor
software updates and most hardware upgrades will not affect this. You
will only need to obtain another minor update if you obtain a new
computer and/or when a new version of OS X (i.e. 10.4.x) is released.
This is simply an update, not an upgrade hence the price.

Diskwarrior is a great product for repairing hard disks as well as
preventing damage, however the reason for this is the fact that it
contains unique information about each Mac on the market. without
this information the product will not perform as it cannot meet the
standards that are required.

Cheers, Mairian.

My solution has been to learn about FSCK from the internet and with
assistance of some very Patient folk over at the Perth Linux User
Groups (PLUG) mailing list or monthly workshops. Hence, have not
needed DiskWarrior for some time just run the Apple scripts through
Cocktail and problems seem to resolve themselves. Which I have not
seen any since using 10.4 and later .3 OS X anyway. Defragmenting and
corruption issues are solved by using HFS+ Journalling file system
and Disk Utility monthly, which is utilising FSCK anyway.

http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintainingmacosx.html

Another informative site for OS X issues http://www.macosxhints.com

Finally, if not implemented already Introduce yourself to a backup
regime, Automator and an external firewire drive works for me.

No need for said software and save a bit of money on upgrades.

Cheers!

Re: Ebay

2004-03-26 Thread Lindsay Adams

To All re ebay
This type of auction pre-apporoved bidder type is currently under
investigation by several agencies. The auctions are run by individuals
who have stolen anothers email identity and use it to list items on
ebay. A trick to picking the cons is to see what the seller has sold
in the past and I bet it wasn't computer gear. They will ask you to
depoisit money through western union and also say they are sending you
a UPS booking number. They may also give you some bull about it being
part of a bankrupt store sale OS. UPS will give anyone a booking
number without sending goods as they give out quote numbers for
transport. Please report to ebay and if you get caught the federal
police who will take details of the site/auction. Also there is the
escrow service that ebay offer however the scammers will give you a
reason why they can't do that.

It is similiar to scams running involving cheap plasma screens, digital
cameras, large LCD screens. most are coming out of central Europe and
are very difficult/almost impossible to track.

Buyer beware.

Note ebay only give fraud protection to $400 and then its all your
cost. .

In closing if you can't touch it don't buy it.
Talk soon

Slightly off topic, but is it 'safe' to buy things from Ebay? I just

noticed a dual 2gig G5 with 500 gig of 7200rpm drives, an apple 23
inch cinema display and all the

other bells and whistles going for $3800.

Usually if it's too good to be true, it probably is!

There are a number of e-bay con artists selling either stuff that

doesn't exist, or stuff

that's stolen. My rule is usually don't spend more than you can afford

to lose.

Definitiely a scam of sorts.

Important points with this particular one:

Note: This listing is restricted to pre-approved bidders or buyers
only.

Email the seller to be placed on the pre-approved bidder/buyer list.

(ie: Please sign up for our spam list and get hassled to buy all sorts
of

junk :)

and the Feedback shows that bob6960_0 apparently hasn't ever sold
anything

on Ebay (but has bought an odd assortment of Xbox and elctronics gear).
Identity fraud on eBay is a potential problem to watch out for. (ie:
sellers hijacking someone's account that has reasonable positive
feedback)

I've used eBay a number of times with no problems whatsoever, but you
do

need to be able to spot a scam, and do your homework. I'd _always_
contact the seller prior to placing a bid, and prefer to buy local,
so I

can see the goods before parting with my hard-earned.

Re: quick laptop question

hi to the interested
Have been the victim of Toshiba quality for the past 4 years. Work for
Govt dept that seems to have a love affair with the company. Sadly the
satelitte series has been a huge disappointment. Recurrent similiar
failures involving video power supplies, and other varied technical
short comings requiring the machines to be shipped back to Sydney for
repair as the local agents not authorised by Toshiba to do repairs.

Okay if you live over east but when you live in the west it means
being without your machine for 2 to 3 weeks. ( Broome to Perth to
Sydney to Perth to Broome) as Toshiba will not receive goods or send
goods directly to the client. Indeed with 2 of the machines they
travelled to Sydney twice to have the same problem fixed. can't
comment on the 2003 or 04 versions as we won't be touching Toshiba
again.

So for after sales service I would give Toshiba a big fat Egg.

And for quality of product regardless of price the old adage is true
you get what you pay for (almost) ;o).

considered as a quality PC laptop manufacturer some models yes some
models no... buy with caution and only after a hands on

and remember _if_ a key point is that prospective buyer wants to
transport it frequently the 17 models of all brands may fail due to
weight. I haven't seen/picked up Sony's but the Toshiba is SERIOUSLY
HEAVY!

for this reason my next laptop will be a 12 iBook or PowerBook

.mac account

2004-01-28 Thread Lindsay Adams

Hi All
Am new to the Mac world and am wondering what value there is in a US$99
.mac account.. Does one have to subscribe to get the security updates
etc, or is it just another email server? Of course listening to the
Apple people it seems that I will be unable to breathe without one...

Thanks
Lindsay

ebay G5 bargain

2004-01-13 Thread Lindsay Adams

Hi all

Was surfing ebay the other night and came across this sweet deal.
supposedly these nice people in Italy send you a new G5 and a 23 inch
cinema screen for the below price and they pay for postage/delivery.
The delivery cost alone from italy to Aust for the UPS 48 hours service
for an item of this size is around $1000.

I'm sure they'll manage to rip some poor fellows of. Is similiar group
that were peddling plasma screens and digital camera recently.

If you want a laugh check out ebay.

the guys whose email they have highjacked usually sells crockery :o).

sadly the ebay group refuses to axe auctions like this which are
clearly bogus. apparently no crime committed until they actually rip
someone off.

Just another example of buyer beware, and keep those passowrds secure.

Lindsay

Hello Lindsay,

If you agree with what i am going to propose to you we have a deal.
First of all i need your full name and address,so i can make a
reservation at UPS service for sending the package and you will have it
in 48 hours at your place.

Look below are all the details I think you need to close this deal
quick and successfully.

I'm sales representative for an US corporation that trades its products
and since the end of November l'm working for their Italian office.
THE BUY IT NOW PRICE FOR THIS PRODUCT IS AU $2,699.00 WITH SHIPMENT
INCLUDED and you can buy it without winning the auction.
Right now l'm located in Palermo (country: Italy) because here I meet
my source directly in the factory.

The product is brand new, factory sealed with all the accessories.

It is an US model and will come with warranty fully transferable to
your name.
It will come with the receipt from the authorized dealer and there will
be no problem for you to use the warranty.

Shipping: l will ship via UPS but you can choose other mail
carrier .ltusually takes 48 hours till the package arrives to your
door. l

will cover the shipping and insurance costs.
Payment: l'm a serious seller with more than 2 years of experience in
this field.
l'm a fair trader with a very good feedback on ebay which is the proof
that l have closed a lot of successful deals.

During this period l learned that best deals are made when the
risk involved is minimum.
You will arrange payment through western union.
I have something safe for you because I want you to be sure that
you will receive the product and I hope we will collaborate in the
future too because I want to develop this business as soon as possible.
Look what I can do for you:
-you will make the transfer to my location but not to my name(you will
use your best friends name for example as receiver's name)so you can be
sure that I will not pick up the money until you get the product. So you
make a deposit at western union and you will give me the transfer's
details(SENDER'S NAME,RECEIVER'S NAME,MTCN) so i can check that the
deposit was made.

After i verify I will send you the product immediately and email
you the tracking number from UPS.
-only after you will receive the product and check if it OK you will
have to change the of the transfer to my name so i can collect my money.

So until you will NOT have the product in your hands money will be
deposited in your best friend's name at an western union agent.
My old buyers of course make the transfer at western union directly to
my
name which is easier and i will be happy if you can trust me in doing
so but because it is our first deal i proposed you this very safe and
efficient method so you can only deposit the money first and after you
will get the product to allowed me to cash it.

Probably this payment method it is not very familiar to you but since i
am in Italy (where is a lot of bureaucracy ) l am used to it each of my
customers being satisfied with it. l have to admit that it is the most
efficient process to go through.
Return policy: 20 days.my suppliers only approved this kind of  deal
and that is why i have to follow his desire.

Product: 2GHZ Apple Power Mac G5
Price: AU $2,699.00

Here is my address:

Mail me asap ,if you are still interested!
Thanks!

Virtual PC 6.1

2004-01-05 Thread Lindsay Adams
Trying unsuccessfully to load above onto the mac. Using Dual 1,25 G4
with 1.7 G of RAM and continue to get the following error message
whenever I try to create a new PC.

OS not found.
Install OS on this hard drive.

However, there is no command prompt to allow typing of instructions,
nor do windows shortcut keys work in the window.

Have tried M$ website but that is only useful if you have bought the
full version with the OS included. Have tried loading full versions of
Win 98 SE, ME, and XP with the same result.

Reason I need this is to run M$ Access as this has the last 7 years of
data for thesis I am writing and can't afford the time to re-enter the
information.

Any thoughts would be gleefully entertained.

Thanks in advance.
Lindsay

Fwd: Phil's story

2003-12-29 Thread Lindsay Adams

Phil,
sorry to hear about the visitation you had. would also suggest we keep
an eye out on ebay as this seems to be the modern way of fencing goods
(no ID needed). Do you have serial numbers etc?

Good luck with the search
