Thanks guys!
no infra-red - bummer!
had a few probs trying to sort the ap out so thought my time was better spent
rehearsing my talk and i will do it from the Air
rather than prancing around the room.
;)

thanks heaps

SLOW DOWNLOAD Renting Movie from iTunes

2011-11-12 Thread rb...@iinet.net.au
Hi WAMUGers
Got new Apple TV and Timecapsule this week.
Rented a movie on iTunes tonight.
It took 20 minutes until it was ready to play.
Then after 70 minutes it stopped playing and we had to wait another 7 or 8
minutes until it had caught up downloading before
it was ready to play the rest.
Is this normal?
A bit underwhelming?
Are you going to say my Internet speed is lacking?

Should I phone iinet and have a chat?

AppleTV movie rentals

The last comments by LAR1999 are interesting:

/Quote:
I have had my ATV2 for over a year now and I watch itunes daily (really need
to get a life) But here is what I have noticed.
When trying to stream directly thru the apple tv box that is connected to my tv
the length of download time is totally crazy up to
20hrs? for movies or tv episodes.

However, if I log into my itunes account on my PC (desktop laptop both work)
and select the tv shows or movies I want to
watch and then I let them load to my pc, Then I simply go into my itunes
settings on my PC and under advanced settings
enable turn on home sharing”

Wait time is between 45min to an hour for movies and 30 to 45min for episodes.
What I do is select 2,3,4 movies/episodes all
at one time on my pc. I find that if I wait an hour to watch the first movie I
can watch a whole evening of uninterrupted
movies/episodes because when ordering thru your PC you can watch and stream
simultaneously which you cant do if you
purchase directly thru your tv connection.

I know this is not a fix and not what is advertised for the product but if you
are like me and and like the variety of the apple tv
you may want to try this you may still have to wait a little bit. However, once
the first movies has finished downloading and you
are watching it your others shows will already be downloading. Also, I have
never ever had an issue using the above method
with playback, stop, pause, or the same show downloading twice.”

Need for speed
The speed of your broadband connection determines how quickly you can start
watching your rental movie.
Apple claims that with a 6Mbps broadband connection, you should be able to
begin watching a standard-def movie in less
than 30 seconds and a high-def movie in less than a minute.
A 2Mbps connection gets you playback for a standard-def movie in about a
minute and a start time for a high-def movie in
about two hours.
If you have a 768kbps broadband connection you’ll want to plan ahead.
Apple suggests a standard-def movie will be ready to play in 1.5 hours and a
high-def movie in about eight hours.

Ronni

Hi blitto,

The simplest way to avoid re-downloading Lion on all your Mac computers is to
simply copy the Lion Installation app, that you
download from one computer, to all the other computers.

The installation app is just downloaded into the /Applications folder and is
named Mac OS X Installer.
Simply copy this file to your other computers and run it for the Lion
Installer – it will be just as if you had downloaded it onto
all of your Macs.

PLEASE NOTE: The Lion Installer does actually delete this file once it starts
the Lion Installation so make sure you copy the
Installation files before you run the installation otherwise you will have to
re-download it all.

I purchased a copy of Lion on the Mac App Store, how many computers can I
install it on?

The software license agreement (SLA) permits you to “download, install, use
and run” one copy of Lion on all Mac’s that you
“own or control”. So effectively if you own 10 Mac computers you can purchase
just one copy of Lion from the Mac App Store
and you are good to install it on all 10 of those. Below is the actual section
from the SLA relevant to this question:

“2B(i) to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one
(1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each
Apple-branded computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Mac OS X Snow Leopard
Server (“Mac Computer”) that you own or
control;”

Firefox disables two finger pinch/zoom gestures on a Mac.

Safari recognises ’Two Finger Pinch', but Firefox doesn’t. There is a way

I won’t bother typing it here unless this is your problem, post back if you

I have found that if a gesture isn't working as it should, going to
System Preferences and un-ticking and re-ticking
the required trackpad gesture can kick it into working correctly.
Just close SysPrefs panel after un-ticking, then re-open System

It's primarily Education focussed rather than Technology but stuff WAMUGers may be interested in includes:

ipad2
printing is becoming obsolete
apple has 40% of music sales with itunes store and claims a second revolution is about to happen - The Publishing Industry will soon be revolutionised by the iBooks store
The ipad took only 9 months to reach 15 million users!
• Ipad is not technology its about Content.
• The teacher need NOT be the smartest person in the class
• ePub – the open eBook standard
• We should be teaching kids to write aps

Dear Rob
You are the only person I know in the Apple echelons, so I seek some direction from you.
I am setting off on a 3 month photographic expedition within 4 weeks and my old Toshiba Tecra is a risk because of its age and also it doesn't handle HD vision.

So I have to try and upgrade.

I have a good measure of sponsorship and support forthe expedition
- Tropical Marine Services are providing a 70 foot expedition vessel and skipper for frre
- West Australian Marine Science Institute are putting in $23000 to be able to put three scientists with us for 20 days
- Linney's Pearls are providing $20,000 for a film maker from Geo New Media to come on board with the scientists and make a doco about my work and the interaction with the scientists.
- Am still hanging out for two other sponsors to approve support with upgrades to some Canon SLR equipment and lenses

But I can't get money for computer upgrade. And my personal resources are stretched to the limit.

I want to go to Final cut pro because of its ability to handle the HD formats I will be using with video from the new Canon SLR bodies and from the underwater cameras.. I will be using the Canons as HD 1080p movie cameras as well as for stills. The focus is on the stills work, but I will shoot HD video as well (because I can). The Geo New Media crew will bring their own HD gear on board, but I will supply them with the 'blue chip' close-up macro work, time lapses and general coastal image of when they are not aboard.

Two things
- what is the minimum hardware and software I can get away with at the moment on Apple? I won't be editing long form in the field, but will need to edit some short pieces and be able to create 'hold take' reels.
- if I can beg, borrow or steal a MAc from somewhere for the three months - at least I will have ingested to hard drives with material that I can work with on Final Cut Pro when I can afford a machine after the expedition.
- Do you know of any program or route that Apple could lend a machine as sponsorship?

I have become quite 'sponsorable' for my stills photography over the last couple of years. Australian Geographic has been good to me with three runs now, including the last one that I got to write as well as photograph. They just told me that my work is to be included in a coffee table glossy book they are putting out to celebrate 25 years of great Australian photography. Also Photo Review Australia ran a five page feature on my work at the beginning of the year. It's that article that brought about the offer of the expedition vessel from Tropical Marine Services.

The vessel already has Apple gear on the bridge. Given that someone else is making a doco about me - we could ensure good product placement. I am a well qualified broadcast producer and editor and would do Apple proud if I could access some gear for the project period.

There is a website "Fine Art Photography from remote shores"that I have set up to present the project as it evolves. It is a groundbreaking project that is already getting a lot of attention. It will get good coverage. I will have some idea of the Australian Geographic articles over the next 12 months generated from this. The current issue is 'just being put to bed' and then The photo editor and story editor will work through my suggestions. So I should be in a good position to pitch to an appropriate person for IT support at the end of the week.

There will be a series of exhibitions of the collection after the expedition. I can create video interstitials of Apple media working in the field.

This will undoubtedly be the most interesting and extensive display of photographs and media materials of Australia's remote Kimberley coast available at completion. An announcement of Heritage Listing for the Kimberley coast is due very soon.

If you have any thoughts on my equipment needs - ie suggestions; or know of any process or contacts to approach Apple for some support - it would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you are well.

Kind regards

Restore new mac from old Time Machine b.up

2010-02-03 Thread rb...@iinet.net.au

<rb...@iinet.net.au><ma...@zeus.as.edu.au>

Hi

I'm trying to restore a students account ontonew macbook using the students external HD time machine backup (that backed up the old macbook which is kaput).

Both Migration Assistant and the original mac setup program fail to recognise the time machine backup. I get to the point where you have to select the time machine backup volume, the usb drive is plugged in, but I just get a spinning wheel that continues to spin.

Although i can see the volume on the desktop.

Could it be because the student was using 10.5 and the new macbook is 10.6??

Or is what i'm trying to do not possible?

Any ideas appreciated please

Firefox is OK when i log in as a different user.
So what is the next step (please)?

 Rod

So from that we conclude the problem is most likely to be in your user ,

so you explore in

Hard drive - users - your user - Library - for things firefox and
Mozilla .

You could throw them all away but you would probably lose all your
bookmarks
so you need to be selective ...

If we ask the question ... if something off the net has stored itself
in Firefox
where is the most likely place to look ?

I would try ... Caches and Cookies

You should find caches in

  USer - library - caches - Firefox - profiles -

I am not sure about cookies with firefox .

AND

There is another place to look and that is :

User - Library - Application support - Firefox

Noy sure what you will find there .

AND

User - Library - Preferences - org.mozilla.Firefox.plist

 Hi
Halfway through a Firefox session a strange dialogue box came up.
Unfortunately I don't remember what it was.
I tried to cancel it, But Firefox seemed to freeze.
After a Force Quit, now I can't get Firefox to launch.
It seems to launch but there is no Firefox Window.
I have deleted the mozilla prefs or plist.
I have also downloaded a new copy, but still it won't launch.
I have Repaired Disk Permissions and run MacJanitor.
The following message was in Console

 12/03/09 8:32:53 AM com.apple.launchd[141]
([0x0-0x1d01d].org.mozilla.firefox[258]) Exited with exit code: 143

Please - any suggestions would be appreciated.

Start up as an alternative User ... create a new user if you have to

 and try firefox from there
