I have become frustrated with the fact that, when I try to move a file from one

I don't use Google Earth much, but my thoughts are that you are best to use
Dropbox as the place you store you kmz files.

Under the File menu, select Save, then Save As, and Select your Dropbox
 folder.

Then to open the file on the other machine, go to your Dropbox folder and
double click on the file there.

If you don't have a Dropbox account, feel free to use this link to create
one. I get more quota if you do, and you get a bonus too I believe.

the files sent from Word was unreliable, so I switched back and reinstalled
Microsloth. I should have considered Pages right away and trusted Apple but
I simply find my mind doesn't think of that.

There are other things that as a long time mac user- My first was Apple 11
even a Mac portable and so on- is the idea that we actually need some apps
like Microslog when we don't, there are alternatives.
But Ronnie is right things like MacKeeper are just dangerous. There are
things we can do and there are programs that I think are really really
essential and thus my top ten of essential mac apps

 1. Techtool Pro ( Disk warrior until recently
 2. Little snitch (god that has saved my head so many times
 3. Onyx
 4. IStat Menus- that is so good for general observation of status
 5. 1Password ( that should be in capital letters)
 6. Graphic converter -small but really good picture editor.
 7. Mail
 8. Drop box
then I would love to say Pages but I do not use it enough and that is a
 shame
 10. CleanMyMac that has saved so much space and sanity.

I know this is off topic but I like others have favourites and I love to
see who uses what. AND MACKEEPER (I tried it and remembered Ronnie's
 missives and ditched it.
As far as What is happening and what consumes I find activity monitor is
 opened more and more.
So where is Microsoft Word I am a hypocrite and feel I have to use it but
I don't like it Keynote better than Powerpoint and numbers not so.
If people have their favourites and ways of using things such as Pages
 then really great please help.

Re: Happy New Year not so happy …but happy because we are Mac

2013-01-07 Thread tom samson
The thing that gets me about all the changes is not the programs and whether or
not we can afford to change them but our mindsets and what happens when we work
with the dark side and those indomitable .doc and .docx files. I tried Apache
and open Office but some of the rebuilding of the files sent from Word was
unreliable, so I switched back and reinstalled Microsloth. I should have
considered Pages right away and trusted Apple but I simply find my mind doesn't
think of that.

There are other things that as a long time mac user- My first was Apple 11 even
a Mac portable and so on- is the idea that we actually need some apps like
Microslog when we don't, there are alternatives.
But Ronnie is right things like MacKeeper are just dangerous. There are things
we can do and there are programs that I think are really really essential and
thus my top ten of essential mac apps

7. Mail
8. Drop box
then I would love to say Pages but I do not use it enough and that is a shame
10. CleanMyMac that has saved so much space and sanity.

I know this is off topic but I like others have favourites and I love to see
who uses what. AND MACKEEPER (I tried it and remembered Ronnie's missives and
ditched it.
As far as What is happening and what consumes I find activity monitor is opened
more and more.
So where is Microsoft Word I am a hypocrite and feel I have to use it but I
don't like it Keynote better than Powerpoint and numbers not so.
If people have their favourites and ways of using things such as Pages then
really great please help.

As a member and as an English teacher I have just noticed that the WAMUG groups
name is Western Australian Macintosh Users Group
you can belong to Western Australia or you can be A West Australian you cannot
be both at the same time when. Granted the longer form 'Western Australian' has
appeared in Governments but they are somewhat slack in their grammar. Don;t
trust the Macquarie on this it is cumbersome

Scenario. I have a couple of friends who only have a 4Gb download quota. They

Not wanting to breach any licensing conditions, how can I use my ML installer
on their machines to get around their download limitations?
Do they need to pay for ML in the AppStore first, then install from my USB?
 Will that work?

I remember some comments from the IT consultants on the list when the App

In the folder that appears, open Contents, then open Shared Support; you’ll
see a disk image file called InstallESD.dmg.

Just quick reply as still on the road but basically the process will erase
the USB to watch it needs, which is GUID format for those playing at home.

Just quit the Mountain Lion installer if it's open then go to Applications
and you'll find it there (called Install Mountain Lion).
Can the follow the rest of those instructions and should be good.

 Hope that helps

Okay! at this moment I have Rebuilt the Drive- with latest update. reset SMC.
Gone through with Apple test Disc. THe first USB port nearest the arm holding
the iMAc up can recognise my external HD. tried wired mouse and keyboard in the
others no go. I am just on the verge, with a new powered port coming to test
the other ports with the new hub. At present they are dead.
Erratic behaviour with mouse- cannot double click on any app or file icon and
have it open. Not sure about that.
THanks Daniel for the help- still a long way to go before back to normal- still
worried about the other USB ports because still no keyboard.

Have you tried a SMC reset? As if the USB was overpowered then resetting the
 SMC may help do that.
SMC reset can be found here:-

If you're doing the SMC reset, sometimes a step 3a can help. That is, before
you plug the power cable back in. Press and hold the power button briefly
(About 2 seconds). THen do the other steps.
See how that goes and let us know.

TO be more specific. I have always had an edrive on my iMac until now. I
removed the old one thinking it was just an install from Techtool 6 DVD. What I
wanted to do was update the edrive and have the latest Techtools (6) and 10.7.3
but reading the techtool installer note that can no longer be done because
there is a recovrey drive from Lion on the machine and Techtool asks for the
latest version of Lion. I have that but the edrive can not be created. I find
that somewhat odd.

 Hi Tom,

What is happening when you use TTP 6 to create the eDrive?
Does it go through all the process and indicates it is complete, but then you
 find it is not bootable?
Are you creating the eDrive on a FW External Drive or what?

Have you tried repairing disk permissions on the volume chosen as the Mac OS
X Source Volume and then try to make a new eDrive?

Worth reading email tracker programs

 EMail Tracker Programs --
very interesting and a must read!!!

The man that sent this information is a computer tech. He spends a lot of
time clearing the junk off computers for people and listens to complaints
about speed. All forwards are not bad, just some. Be sure you read the very
 last paragraph.
 _
 He wrote:
By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with snopes.com and/or
truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is
just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites.

 Advice from snopes.com VERY IMPORTANT!!
 1) Any time you see an email that says forward this on to '10' (or however
many) of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck or
you'll get good luck or you'll see something funny on your screen after
you send it or whatever --- it almost always has an email tracker program
attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those folks you forward to.
The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is
able to get lists of 'active' email addresses to use in SPAM emails or sell
to other spammers. Even when you get emails that demand you send the email on
if you're not ashamed of God/Jesus --- that is email tracking, and they are
playing on our conscience. These people don't care how they get your email
addresses - just as long as they get them. Also, emails that talk about a
missing child or a child with an incurable disease how would you feel if
that was your child --- email tracking. Ignore them and don't participate!

 2) Almost all emails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others
are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business
cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of
Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of email is,
is a way to get names and 'cookie' tracking information for telemarketers and
spammers -- to validate active email accounts for their own profitable
 purposes.

You can do your Friends and Family members a GREAT favor by sending this
information to them. You will be providing a service to your friends. And you
will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam emails in the future!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listing
regardless how inviting they might sound! Or make you feel guilty if you
don't! It's all about getting email addresses and nothing more.

You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT!

Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a
virus attached! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich! Let's not make it
 easy for them!
ALSO: Email petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other
organization - i.e. social security, etc. To be acceptable, petitions must
have a signed signature and full address of the person signing the
petition, so this is a waste of time and you are just helping the email
 trackers.

Tips for Handling Telemarketers .Please read this too (Merelyn)

 Three Little Words That Work!!

(1)The three little words are: 'Hold On, Please...'

Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of
hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more
time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.

Then when you eventually hear the phone company's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you
know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently
 completed its task.

These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting..

 (2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and
records the time of day when a person answers the phone.

This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a 'real' sales
person to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to
immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times as quickly
as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call, and it kicks
your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in
 their system any longer!!!

 (3) Junk Mail Help:
When you get 'ads' enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these
'ads' with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail
 away.

When you get those 'pre-approved' letters in the mail for everything from
credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the
 return envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them
more than the regular 44 cents postage, 'IF' and when they receive them back.

It costs them nothing if you throw them away

I cannot save the ANZ login details to 1Password. The 1Password save bar

I get a 1PW message that there is nothing to save.

BankWest has a similar plain page to that used by ANZ but it did display the
1PW save bar.I had no problem with (apparently) saving my BankWest
login details to 1PW - but cannot subsequently login to the bank with 1PW!
I fear that 1Password is just not compatible with bank web security which
makes it pretty useless. Further, BankWest appears as an item under the 1PW

the Safari browser extension 3.9.0 (which I assumed is essential) is just not

 - but not very good for security. But I can't prevent the login details
from permanently displaying. 1PW accepted the login data and I can now
login via 1PW or by just clicking in the webpage box as per the old way.
How do I clear the Comsec home page login details from permanent display?
I removed the site from my browser bookmarks and tried a clean connect; I
used a Bing search and selected the site - but these still give the home
page with my login details displayed!

 3. Problem 2: I can't get 1PW to record my login into the ANZ Bank site at
all. (This site was never in the Safari autofill list.) I've followed the
WAMUG notes from Jane Griffiths (01 Aug 2011) for the 1PW workaround for

Perhaps it is well that the Bankwest site was down this evening as I will
try and be optimistic I can make friends with it and 1PW tomorrow.

Similar, but different in many aspects. I can see the benefits of some
 changes, others not so much.
The more I work in Lion, the more I will come to like it I’m sure. Change
sometimes takes a little time to get used to, especially when I thought Snow
Leopard was the greatest Operating System of our time ;-)

I find Lion is much faster and better installed on my MacBook Pro than the
external FW drive (even though it was 800FW connection). I have done the
‘tweaks’ to get coloured icons back in finder sidebar windows and iTunes, I
don’t like all the grey of Lion, picking up coloured icons is much quicker to
 see, especially with my eyes.

I’m getting used to the new Mail in Lion (but hope to change the grey
Mailboxes (or Apple does, as millions of people want colour back), I have
thought of a way but don’t really want to mess in the Resources folder ). I
would not recommend anyone doing this!

So probably, other than the grey of Lion I’m finding it is worth the upgrade
from Snow Leopard. I have not had any issues or problems with Lion. But, I
did make sure before installing it on my work computer that all my
applications worked and I did all the preparation, also a bootable backup of
my Snow Leopard system before installing Lion on my MacBook Pro (just in case
I ever wanted to go back to SL).

 Hi John,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Also I had misunderstood your
question, so my previous rushed reply probably made no sense to you ;-)
Especially the bit about Time Machine backup in Lion not being backward
 compatible with Snow Leopard.

One further question; when I do proceed as you advise, will I still be
able to return to Snow Leopard and use mail as normal?

I thought you had installed Lion on your Mac Mini and wanted to downgrade
(Go Back) to Snow Leopard on your Mac mini.
If that had been the case, NO you can't revert to Snow Leopard Mail from
 Lion Mail.

This is because Lion’s version of Mail uses a different format for its
 message database than older versions.
 It’s not backward compatible.
That’s why when you first open Mail in Lion OS X 10.7, it upgrades the
 format of your messages.

Because of the above, You would not be able to import 'Lion Mail' back to
'Snow Leopard Mail' if you decide to downgrade.
Lion modifies the Mail files so that you cannot go back to Snow Leopard
 Mail.

But, as you have Lion on an external FW Drive and Snow Leopard on your Mac
 mini.
And if you have IMAP Mail Accounts (or a POP Accounts that are set to
'keep messages on the server' for a period of time) so you will be able to
download the email messages again in Snow Leopard Mail, that you would
have downloaded when ’testing out’ Mail in Lion.
You could use both Mail versions of Apple Mail … Mail in Snow Leopard on
Mac mini, and Mail in Lion on the external drive.

That is what I did for a time while I was testing Lion on an external FW
Drive. Before I eventually installed Lion on my MacBook Pro.

As long as you don’t have to ‘Import’ any mail from Lion Mail back in to
Snow Leopard Mail you can use both.

But, make sure you do have Mail Accounts that you can download your
 messages more than once.
If you only have POP Accounts that are set to Remove copy from server
after retrieving a message - ‘immediately … you would lose some messages.

Hope that has answered your question correctly. Post back to list if not.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Your query after installing Lion can you go back to Snow Leopard”?
Well, you can, there are a few things you need to be aware of though.
You would need a ‘cloned backup of your pre-Lion drive’.

Once Lion writes to a Time Machine backup, it's not backward compatible
 with Snow Leopard.

 Hi Tom,

 Phone Disk:

iPad, iTouch or iPhone Disk Mode is made easy with Phone Disk. Using your
standard USB cable, this tiny program runs in the menu bar or system tray of
your Mac or PC. When it finds an iPod Touch or iPhone it seamlessly mounts it

Re: Lion and MS Word Office

2011-08-19 Thread tom samson

What I did is complete a clean reinstall after my first escapade with Lion and
then back to Snow Leopard- On my MAcBook Pro. I reinstalled word and when
trying to save various documents the word notification box about write
protected… disc space… permissions came up frequently and then I could not save
the document I was then working on. This happened a few times so they are now
all open on the machine. I thought that the permissions -as in Get info (I
remember from Snow Leopard were System and account (Me) were read and write.
So after trying everything I could think of with Word (I know I should be using
Pages) I tried to change the permissions on my HD to System read write Wheel
(group) read write. Still problems though.

There will not be any problems changing the permissions or ownership of

this will not affect the operating system. So feel free to make yourself the
owner of all your documents and to make them read-write for yourself.

I am not sure why the permissions are changed. How did you notice the

the toolbar will appear with the 1Password 1P' icon showing.

Click on that 1P icon and the new style 1Password vault interface will appear

If you do the Apple eye , are you saying that when you click on the

it does not offer you a window to authenticate by entering your

Basically you need to go into terminal and type
(assuming your drive is called My drive)

sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/My drive
Hit Return

sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/My drive
Hit Return

Instead of typing the drive name once you've written
sudo chflags nouchg
You can also then drag the drive icon into the Terminal window and
it will

write it in for you.

Once it's done you can quit out of Terminal, then redo a Get Info on
the

drive and you should have access to them again.

When I did it on the clients computer it took me two goes to get it
right as

I miswrote a command. I also gave it a restart as well.

Re: URGENT Techtool Pro

2009-03-08 Thread tom samson
Thanks Ronnie, I have read the techs from Micromat My laptop only went
through the first two test and hung. Then I had no option but to go
back in with Techtool it was then that I could not see the HDD. I
would love to say that it was coincidence and the Drive was about to
pack in but SMART gave no indication of this. So My presumption, right
or wrong was that Techtool was the culprit. It may be then that
something else was afoot. If the concensus is that TTP5 is stable then
I shall try again. If not I will wait.

Welcome back Ronnie and thanks for the imput

Hello WAMUGers,

I installed TTP5 Version 5.0.2 (Build 3968M) a month or so ago on my
MacBook Pro without any problems and have run all the tests without
any problems.

The only issue I have with TTP5, is it won't run on my TechTool
Protégé.
TTP5 is NOT compatible with Protégé at this time. I've been in touch
with MicroMat Support and they will have a new release of the
Protégé Manager to support TechTool Pro 5.0.x. They have been unable
to tell me WHEN this new release will be available on DVD.
Micromat have no mention on their website that TTP5 is not
compatible with the latest Protégé, and did not know it was
incompatible until I alerted them.

PLEASE NOTE:
You do need to Uninstall TechTool Pro 4.6.2 before you install TTP 5.
I Uninstalled TechTool Pro 4.6.2 first using the TTP 4.6.2 installer
disc.
When I went to empty the trash I was unable to because “the
Operation “TechTool Protection” is in use.

I found out that the TechTool Protection would be removed replaced
when I install TechTool Pro 5:
There is no need to remove the Protection files in the invisible
folder at /.TechTool Pro Items; they will be removed when they are
replaced by the Protection feature of TechTool Pro 5.0.2 (a System
Preferences pane).

PLEASE NOTE:
It also is important to do as suggested by Micromat:
Install the program on a bootable external drive if possible. When
you run the program from the bootable DVD, virtual memory cannot be
used.
When the disk directory is replaced, all of it, plus part of Mac OS
X and TechTool Pro, must be able to be held in RAM.

Unless you have a lot of RAM, this is not likely to be possible.

Micromat suggest you see The Proper Way to Use TechTool Pro. This
was written for TTP4, but also relevant to TTP5.
http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_simpleboardItemid=func=viewcatid=6id=3267#3267

I don't know why Tom Samson had problems, I did read his post on
Micromat Forum and the reply from Micromat to him.

I'm now just waiting for Micromat to release a new version of
Protégé Manager for my TechTool Protégé so I can put TTP5 on him.
I have installed on my Trusty TechTool Protégé - Disk Warrior
v4.1, Data Rescue 11 v1.2.1, Disk Utility, Disk Studio, System
Profiler, Terminal.

Cheers,
Ronni

I still have not heard a thing. Mine still sits here but after
losing a hard drive I am not game to touch it. If someone else has
any luck I would like to hear otherwise my weekly annoyance email

Britannica Again

2009-03-03 Thread tom samson

I really need some help with this.
I have installed Britannica on my iMac (intel) 10.5.6
And I get to the point where it starts to load and then I get this
THIS IS THE ERROR MESSAGE

Cannot Launch Java Application
Uncaught exception in main method:
java.lang.AbstractMethodError:
org.apache.xerces.dom.DeferredElementImpl.getText
Content()Ljava/lang/String

They suggest opening another account and trying again Lo and behold it
works

But all my work is on my initial administration account.

I tried changing the permissions in terminal but no go.

Thus I do not have Britannica running when I need it
Can someone help please.

Re: academic pricing same as non-academic?

2009-02-12 Thread tom samson

I had a much better Deal with JB HiFi
They beat the education prices and offered better deals with
accompanying hardware and Apple Support.
Grab a price and they will beat it. IT is all about sales figures
right now.

Hi Susan,

Yes the Education option is still alive. However, there are only

Mac products at Curtin Computer Shop's website - http://www.bookshop.curtin.edu.au/computershop.html

At the moment Apple is also offer a Back-To-Uni prom, see

Hi all, it appears that students no longer get special pricing on

special academic pricing available, or whether this no longer
happens. cheers, Susan.
