Re: Advice about external hard disk to record live music

2009-09-23 Thread Phillip Bailey

Hi Rob,
The usual spec are:
7200rps and firewire.
What size disk depends on the sample and bit rate and how many tracks.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Rob

I would try and steer away from USB if possible? firewire or eSATA
would be much better.

As for how much storage it would depend on the quality you are
recording at and I am sure there will be others on the list that might
be able to give you some pointers?

Depending on your budget there are some raids boxes that might suit
your needs.

When you say direct from the sound desk is that via a mac?

Best regards

Re: Advice about external hard disk to record live music

2009-09-21 Thread Rob Phillips

Thanks for your advice.

Capture will probably be via a PC. Talking to some other people, I
might have had a simplistic view of the process. If the PC software
captures multiple tracks to disk, we will still need some software to
extract/mix these tracks, and this software or its file format might be
proprietary.

Using an external hard disk with iMovie

2007-10-24 Thread Greg Colgan
Hiya Muggers...

Anyone out there able to advise on the pros and cons of using an external HD
for storing and editing video footage using iMovie? I'd like to buy a disk
but don't know (for example) whether to get a firewire or USB 2.0 drive.

Also, is it best to transfer the iMovie software over to the same disk? If
so, what is the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance for advice!

Best regards,
Greg

Definitely firewire ... unless you have a G5 with a SATA hard drive
in which case the right PCI/PCX - SATA card and a SATA external drive
is a much faster speed .

I've been using an external Firewire 800 drive for a while now and
it's worked out well - though SATA would be quicker

my Powerbook doesn't have it.

Re: Using an external hard disk with iMovie

2007-10-24 Thread Eugene

Hi Greg,

I have always used external firewire drives for working on my movies
but recently was forced to use a USB drive. I was pleasantly
surprised as to how well it ran. No noticeable degradation is terms
of playback, editing and rendering speeds.

I agree with Brian though - leave iMovie itself in the Applications
folder.

  Eugene

Firewire is the format of choice when dealing with continuos data
which VIDEO/FILM is. Firewire 800 is a better option and can be setup
as a RAID within Apples disk Utility.

No, it is better to install all Software within Apples application
folder on your main drive. But your Project File, Cache, Waveforms,
Media, Shared Media folders relative to iMovie should be placed in
same area, your iMovie Project folder. Which is what the Firewire
drive is utilised for.

External hard disk

She wants firewire so she can boot from it.
Does anyone have something reliable at a reasonable price?

I made myself a 400G external HD using the MacPower enclosure
(Firewire 400/800, USB 2.0 + eSata). 336.00 + 216.16. Goto http://
www.staticice.com.au/ and plug in the components if you know what
they are. The result was Firewire-bootable (it actually has either
backup disk or a Linux install on it) and fast because of the FW 800
+ SATA internal.

External Hard Disk Power supply / black box dongle

2005-05-20 Thread Brett Carboni
Somehow bent broke the pins that plus into the black box that powers my
external 80Gb firewire drive. Anybody know if/where I can get another one?

Is this a thing that you get at a local electronics store? How many
different permutations of these black dongles can exist in the real
universe? Will Lucas make a TV series?

Specs
Asian Power Devices Model DA-30C03-M5
Input 100-240V 0.85A 50-60Hz
Output 5Vdc - 2.5A
 12Vdc - 1.5A

Brett,

Try looking for the plug online at the electronics stores.

For instance, Jaycar in Newcastle St is at http://www1.jaycar.com.au

You will not find one that is multi output (they all do one voltage at a
time and not two together)

If you would like to give me a ring on 0419 923 731, I can give you my
