Apple will release information when they are ready and not a second earlier (well, when Steve Jobs is good and ready)... Meanwhile everyone and his dog, cat, canary and goldfish will all post rumors, thoughts, opinions, criticism, and then they post even more rumors that they heard from their Aunt's neighbour second cousin's who works for a cleaning company in the building six blocks from Apple HQ in Cupertino and post it as 100% reliable news... which of course it isn't but then they have the hide to blast Apple for not producing the product THEY demanded (regardless of the fact that 90% of the buyers, which often amount to millions of people in a matter of a few days are over the moon by the REAL announcement and product specs!) So until Apple themselves post the announcement(s) about new products, everything is hearsay and rumor... and even after the official announcements come out, you need to take some reports with a grain of salt. I must say I'll be very amused if, after all this hype and innuendo, and with Apple's compettitors falling over themselves scrambling to release tablets of their own, Apple doesn't release one! That would truly be a master stroke. Apple's official line, from Steve Jobs down, is we do not comment on unreleased products and until Apple themselves do make an official announcement, NO ONE should make any decisions based on the rumors and news stories that fly around the Internet in the weeks leading up to Apple Events... in the past we had a major surge of rumors late December, early January leading up to Macworld Expo... this year Apple aren't involved in it, so the rumor mills started trying to pin down dates for the next Apple Event... and the indications are that Jan 27th US time there may be such an event... but again there is NO official announcement nor media invites sent out yet. We all have to wait until January 27th (28th here) when Apple hosts a Special Event at which point they may or may not announce a product called the iSlate. In answer to your question: No, it is not normal for Apple to refrain from announcing new items.
