Mayberry remembers it's veterans
Since Veterans Day is Monday, I thought we would reflect on veterans in Mayberry. I can think of at least 10 men either seen or spoken of in Mayberry who were veterans. Can anyone name them?? Well, here's all I can think of including both veterans both with us and those who aren't: Al, Burt Jenkins, The Milo Boys, (Barny's Sidecar) Andy (A Feud is a Feud) Barney (Staten Island Library?), Sam Becker (Silent Sam: Korea), Ed Sawyer (Stranger in town) Ed Sawyer's army buddy Larsen from Mayberry, Gomer, Frank Myers' grandfather (Civil War), Goober (learned YO! in the National Guard), Dud Wash, Malcolm Merriweather (Cold Cream Guards). Unnamed Recruiting SGT (allan Melvin) when Ernest T tries to enlist Sam Jones (spin off on Mayberry RFD. Italian Campaign) Old Hugo Hopfleisch (on the wrong side but a heck of a soldier) Otis Campbell's relative Nathan Tibbs LT Edwards (Ms Edwards ancestor in the Battle of Mayberry and below) COL Caleb Stonewall Lawson COL Carleton Taylor (NC 7th CAV) COL Goober Pyle (NC 7th CAV) Today is the anniversary of the Marines! Happy Birthday CPL Gomer Pyle OC Ed O'Dwyer History! That's My Subject! Veterans in Mayberry
I know Barney and Quiet Sam talked about their military days, and Andy talked about being in Paris when he was in the military. Gomer, of course, joined the USMC. Ernest T. attempted to join (just for the uniform, of course), but I guess he couldn't be considered a veteran b/c his attempt to join was so rudely rejected. Andy named off some of the Mayberry veterans when getting Barney to give up his motorcycle, and I can't recall the names right now. I think there were the Milo boys on that list. That's all I can think of for now. - Lisa ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Opie and Dennis
I remember an episode of Dennis the Menace that featured a very young Ronny Howard, and also in this episode, there was a TV repairman, played by Dub Taylor (Mayberry's mailman and Emmett's brother-in-law)...AND his name in Dennis the Menace was Opie Swanson! ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Veteran's Day
I noticed that someone mentioned on this list the Veteran's Day is on Monday. Actually, Veteran's Day is Sunday, November 11. The confusion comes from the fact that some of us have Monday off. Green Hornet
I don't recall ever seeing anything about this before, but while watching The Green Hornet (old TV show), they drove through downtown Mayberry! I was watching them drive through this downtown when it struck me that something was familiar about it so I backed it up several times to study it. The camera angle is one we never got in TAGS. Remember how the theater sort of juts out into the street? If you stood at that point and looked back toward the court house, you'd see 1) the side of the theater marquee, 2) the porch of the hotel, 3) a side view of the front of the court house. So the court house columns really looked like 1 column. You could also see the stores across the street from the court house where Walker's drug store and the bank were normally found. The Hornet came from where we know the Feed and Seed to be, turned onto Main St at the Court House and zoomed up past the theater and makes the slight turn into the street that begins at that point. When they make that turn, you can see the Palmerton Café as the 1st store on the street. I do recall seeing the Palmerton in TAGS streets shots (maybe in one of those waiting for the bus shots), now I know where those shots were made. I know Batman, Superman and Captain Kirk used the streets of Mayberry; now we can add The Green Hornet to the list. dan ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://wbmutbb.com/mailman/listinfo/wbmutbb_wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
