Mayberry Day in Knoxville, TN Sept. 19

2009-09-16 Thread King of Mayberry
Just to let everyone know that our Knoxville "Mayberry" chapter
(www.mayberrychapter.com) of the TAGSRWC will be hosting a "Mayberry Day" at
the TVA&I Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee this Saturday, Sept. 19 from 4:30 pm to
6:00 pm. Last year we had over 200 people join us for the festivities. We will
have a pie-eating contest, Opie look-alike contest, whistling
contest, and of course a TAGS trivia contest. Winners will receive cash prizes
and gifts from Weaver's Department Store! Several of our chapter members will
be in character in addition to a squad car parked out front. We'll be spreading
the word about TAGSRWC and our chapter too.

The festivities will be in the Pepsi Entertainment Tent down from the Kerr
Building. For more information, go to www.tnvalleyfair.org or contact me
directly.

It's BIG!

mayberry_bloopers

2009-09-16 Thread Larry Hamrick
Allan, I love hearing your podcasts and reading everything at wbmutbb.com.
Please keep up the good work. Mayberry Days are just a week or so away and I
just can't wait! I've seen a blooper that I haven't heard about anywhere else.
In the episode "TV or not TV" (season 5), Andy, a TV producer and his
assistant(bank robbers) are discussing a new TV show called "Sheriff without a
Gun". It's a scene in the courthouse and Barney comes in with his hat strap
under his chin. Please note the gun rack. It's locked then cut away and come
back it's unlocked! This happens a couple of times. Also, Barney puts away his
gun in a locked gun rack! Has anyone else noted this? Anyway, these type of
things are what endears us to TAGS. I'd like some feedback from you or any
other member. See ya' at Mt. Airy.

Frank-ly speaking

2009-09-16 Thread Tom Lawrence
I saw an ad in a magazine this week that depicted current actors with classic
stars. Frank Sinatra was shown ... and he DID near an amazing resemblance to
Barney Fife/Don Knotts!
The closing scene of that episode, when Don Knotts shuffles off in a Sinatra
salute, always elicits a smile. Mr. Knotts was a genius, pure and simple. TV's
Keaton.

You're Right Ken!

2009-09-16 Thread Bob James

"Wasn't the actor who bought the Mayberry cannon the same actor who was Ward
Cleaver in the very first pilot episode of "Leave it to Beaver"? I could be
wrong on this but for some reason this comes to mind."

Ken: I think you're correct on this one. The actor named Max Showalter was
signed to 20th Century Fox in the late 1940's. His name was later changed to
one more acceptable, Casey Adams. After appearing as Ward Cleaver in the Leave
It To Beaver pilot, he was replaced by Hugh Beaumont before the series started
filming. He did appear on a single episode of TAGS in 1961. P.S. The character
that portrayed Wally in the pilot episode was also replaced for the series. Bob

TAGS' biggest guest star, again

2009-09-16 Thread m white
TAGS fans,

I appreciate the reminder (why did I need it?!?!?) of Buddy Ebsen as possibly
the "biggest" guest star. I think that may be right as he had already had big
roles in "Davy Crockett" and many other movies. As much as I like Alan Hale
Jr. (and concede that he is bigger physically) I think he was viewed more as a
character actor until he showed up on "Gilligan".

Any other votes or suggestions for "biggest guest star" on TAGS?

Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 10, Issue 270

2009-09-16 Thread Ken Anderson
My vote for the biggest guest star on Mayberry would have to be Alan Hale
Jr. There is only one word to describe him. Big, really big. Now I
understand why folks think Buddy Ebsen would be there choice, but Alan Hale
was much bigger than Buddy. Why he must have outweighed him by 50 pounds or
more.

Biggest Star and Goobers digs

2009-09-16 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
I'm impressed with the knowledge and answers on the biggest star question.
During the original run, I was like Goober in the "punch in the nose" episode,
still comic book age.. I was going to say that Allan Hale was the "Biggest"
guest star, ha ha..but I didn't really have a clue. I thought Jack Nicholson
was kind of an unknown at that time.

I've been thinking about Goober. I guess he never really did outgrow the comic
books, did he? I wonder what his place would look like. Besides his cousin
Gomer, he was one of very few main characters that we never really saw where
they live. We saw Floyd's porch only..and heard about Gomer's room in the back
of the station..but never really got a clue of where Goober lived. .or what it
was like.

I'm guessing rather drab, Early American Comic Book décor...just a little
bigger than the backroom at the courthouse?? Perhaps a room on the back of a
bigger house where he could park the truck out back, and tinker around in a
detached garage off of an alley. You walk in, and it's kind of a one-room
efficiency. A refrigerator, and small stove with just a few cabinets. A
larger coffee table in front of a beat-up overstuffed couch (that also serves
as a bed) with multiple stacks of comic books on the table. On the wall, a few
worn-our movie posters of things like the Crab that ate Minnesota. A small TV
is dwarfed by a large hutch that it sits on..a family heirloom that may be the
only nice piece of furniture in the place. Besides the TV is a checkerboard
and checkers, some wrenches and a spare tire gauge.A small closet holds the
brown suit and few clean uniforms. There is a special hook for the beanie.
A small table with two chairs sit near the refrigerator. On the table is a
radio, a box of cereal, a package of cookies, and a few more Comic books, and
copies of Popular Mechanics
. Is that how you picture the Goober home?

What can you expect from the latest TAGS book, 'Yes, There Is A Mayberry'

you will find four orginal poems throughout the book, plus you will learn how
the show challenged the other two networks and what series failed against TAGS.
There's a story of the challenges in the early life of the author plus you will
learn all about Mrs. Andy Taylor. Her likes and dislikes, where she came from
and  how Andy met her.
You'll read how Andy became Sheriif and where he and his young wife lived

You will go along as Choir Director John Masters gives the author a first hand
look on one of the most nostalgic tours of Mayberry you will ever take.
Other features include a look at the writers of the show and in how many
episodes each participated. There is also a dedication to the members of
WBMUTBB on-line club, and those who worked behind the scenes to make TAGS one
of the greatest television shows ever.
Finally, if your not too tired you will be challenged to take eight different
quizzes supplied by eight of Mayberry's finest educators, consisting of 875
questions
The book is designed in beautiful orange and blue reflecting Mayberry Union
High School colors.
Get ready for an unforgettable reading experience.

I am the author's daughter-in-law, Lois, and America's newest Andy Griffith
