Single Episode Appearances

2010-05-08 Thread Ken Anderson
Here are a few one time appearance Mayberry folks that came to mind. I too
am sure there must be more.

Bert Miller the peddler only appeared once. Never got to see him working
for Ben Weaver.
Mrs. Mendlebright, Barney's landlady only appeared once, and Hawthorne even
made her house for a village piece.

Frankie Flint and her Paw only appeared once.
McNally only appeared once, although he came back as a different character.
Mrs Lucken who owned the woman's clothing store.
Owner of the hardware store who sold Andy the canning jars.
Real estate agent who helped Howard buy Floyd's building.
Mr. Crawford who gave Opie the job at the drugstore.
Quiet Sam never appeared once his son was born.
Tom Silbey and Annabelle never showed up after he reappeared from the dead.
Frank Myers was only in the episode where he was evicted.
Jimmy the Goat never returned to Mayberry after eating the dynamite. Maybe
they had a restraining order on him.

The Boones never reappeard.
Henry Bennett the jinx was a one time appearance.

Re: Mayberry County's government

2010-05-08 Thread Dixonhayes
Someone else here said the show's writers wrote from the heart, not by the
book (to paraphrase Barney), and I've said before, this was a sitcom, not a
civics lesson, so there are a lot of unanswered questions concerning
governmental matters in the township/county of Mayberry. I submit that
perhaps
Mayberry County had an early form of what we would now call a metro form
of government--one body making decisions for the entire county, no separate
city council/county commission, etc. (Mayberry ahead of its time?) If
Andy and Barney worked for the county, they'd report to the county commission,
not the mayor or council (which they'd do if they were a police chief and
patrolman). But in a metro government they'd report to one board and
there might even be a mayor that serves all or most of the municipality.

*** If Andy and Barney are county employees why do they have to submit all
reports etc to the town Mayor?***

Perhaps partly due to the metro government setup, and perhaps because the
mayor was always threatening to cut funding to the sheriff's department.
Clearly the mayor can't fire Andy, only the voters can. The mayor seems
to think differently but then again his political tone deafness is a big part
of his character. I can't imagine Mayor Stoner ever getting re-elected.
The mayor was also always threatening to tell on Andy to the governor, so
that's why I think it was all about funding.

Clearly the writers wanted an antagonist for Andy and that's why prickly
Mayor Stoner showed up. But that's not easy when Andy himself is really the
boss and the viewers know it.

***Why does Mayor Stoner get to decide if the town band can go to Raleigh?
Shouldn't the council vote on that?***

There are some decisions that can be made solely by the mayor. Maybe the
band went previously due to a discretionary fund allocated by the mayor and
this time he said no.

***How can Sam Jones be head of the town council when he lives outside the
city limits?***

Again, same reason as Andy taking Barney's resignation to the town
council...Mayberry (possibly) had a metro form of government. Of course
calling
it the town council doesn't make a lot of sense but maybe that's more out
of tradition.

***How do Mayors Stoner and Pike get by with all those impromptu meetings
without following open meeting rules?***

Because no one ever called them on it, and that would've made a great
episode. (Gomer once made a citizen's arrest so he'd be a great candidate to
make a complaint.) But the show never was that big on such social
commentary.

***Why do Andy and Barney get to vote on council matters, like selling the
canyon? Doubt if they are actual members of the council.***

The biggest unresolved issue of the whole list, I would think. Most
likely a dramatic device showing Andy and Barney reluctantly coming on board,
but it makes no sense in the plot.

If Andy is Sheriff of the county of Mayberry why does he do all his
sheriffing in and around Mayberry only? Aren't there other towns in the
County of Mayberry?***

We never heard if Mayberry County had any other towns in it. And we do
see quite a few scenes with Andy or Barney taking their squad car way out
into the country, as a real life sheriff in the South most likely would.
A moonshiner firing shots at people to keep them away from his yard,
probably wouldn't have done that two blocks from downtown Mayberry.

***When Barney decided to run for Sheriff, he hadn't filed papers yet. If
he still had time to file his papers, why couldn't Andy have time to file
his?***

As I recall Barney filed his papers at the last minute, then the deadline,
then Andy found out he didn't get the job. Andy was perhaps foolish for
not filing papers, he could always withdraw later.

Yes, I admit some of these are a stretch but like I said, the writers
weren't trying to write civics lessons.

RE: List of things to do in Mayberry

I bet you had to wear your bucket for awhile to come up with all that!

I just come by it naturally. In Mayberry you can also make a citizen's
arrest, fill a fake hold up at a gas station or drug store, get drugs for a
dime, drink a malted, wink at a jinx, rub your head, rub your tummy, recite a
poem to ward off a hex, let moths nest in your hair, get lost in a cave, kick a
can, plant some spinach, sing ala Barney, kidnap a farm gal, eat a gala dinner
by candlelight, sing kitchen songs, fake brushing your teeth, listen in on

the road, runaway and join the Navy, peek in on newlyweds, try to stop a

night, call the man, eat dynamite, take a goat up town, print a newspaper, get
your picture in a newspaper, use a sling shot, sleep on an ironing board, host
a summit, answer a chain letter, teach a dog to talk, get a uvula, get a

an apple tree, fall down a well, put a bucket on your head, join the Marines,

Aunt Bee's Medicine Man and Harriet's List

2010-05-08 Thread Ken Anderson
I just finished watching Aunt Bee's Medicine Man and it brought to mind a
question. Barney drops Andy off at his house and then leaves to go pick up
Colonel Harvey. If Barney has the car, how did Andy get all those tidily women
to the courthouse? They could barely stand up. Aunt Bee asked the Colonel to
address the ladies church group. Now on Thursday I am addressing a church
senior fellowship group. Sure wish I had a few bottles of the Indian Elixir to
take along to liven things up. I can't even make smoke come out of my ears. I
think a movie should be made from the list of things to do in Mayberry that
Harriet came up with. What a great job she did with that. It could be titled
The Mayberry List and it sure would be one up on The Bucket List. It would
have to be a series though to accomplish all those things in just one movie.
Three cheers for Harriet .

Re: thelma lou, ken, and old times

2010-05-08 Thread daltonarick
I always wondered where Thelma Lou worked. She would get off early, about the
time Opie got out of school and she came from the direction of school. I
thought she might have taught or was the secretary.
I don't think Ken hogged anything. He has great contributions and knows. A
lot about Andy show. I think it is awesome he does the presentation about
Andy and all.
I think a lot about Andy and all he has given us. There is only one movie he
did I didn't like. It was the one where he played a murderer and he was
executed and they shaved his head. It was the point of him getting killed, and
I consider Andy family.
We have got away from many things besides work ethics. Things like hats and
dressing up and women wearing gloves and hankies. Andy still gives us that and
I think that is why the show remains so strong.

Recently, my daddy passed away. And, when I mentioned it, I received emails of

At the funeral, which I played guitar and banjo, I spoke. I talked about
needing my daddy always and all. But, I also talked about Daddy and me
fishing. We went on Saturdays. I always wanted to know where Andy and Opie
were. Daddy always said they had come earlier or was on the other side of the
lake or river. I will always treasure time I had and a lot of it was spent
watching Andy.
