Mayberrians in Oscar movies
Maybe I didn't make it very clear...I thought I did when I posted my correction..The questions were Three Mayberrians appeared in a movie in which Estelle Parsons won a supporting actress oscar. That had to be a dead give away b/c that's the only one I think she ever won... the movie ..Was Bonnie and Clyde...also starring Michael Pollard (Barney's cousin Virgil), Dub Taylor (Emmet's insurance salesman Brother-in law) and Denver Pyle (Brisco Darling).. I did not say any of them won an oscar but that they only appeared in the movie. The fourth Mayberrian was Buddy Ebsen(hobo David Brown) who was in Breakfast at Tiffanys with Audrey Hepburn and George Pappard..the movie garnered 5 oscars... Ronnie Howard has won several Oscars as Director..One of the best directors in recent years I love all of his movies but he wasn't an answer... George Kennedy won a supporting actor oscar in Cool hand Luke and Jack Nicholson won a best actor oscar in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and of course Bernard Fox (Malcolm Merriwether) appeared in Titanic 1997..which won 11 Oscars... Movie
I saw the cutest movie that Andy Griffith co-starred in. It was made a couple of years ago. It's called Play the Game. Good movie funny and heartwarming at the same time. I recommend it. We watched it on Netflix, so it must be on DVD. JohnnaFayetteville, AR ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Barney's inspirations
I've been gone for a few weeks and its good to get back. reviewing the sentimental moments never gets old..no matter how many times we've done it. A few weeks back I told you of my Visit to Alcatraz, and how that was the likely inspiration to Barney's description of the Mayberry Jail as the Rock It got me to wondering what were all the influenencers of the Lawman that is Brney Fife. Here is my list so far. 1) Stories about the famous Jail Alatraz I'm not sure if thre were any movies about it at that point. 2) The Police Gazette--Barney had a subscription and offered to lean them to Andy 3) The Movie G-Men with Glen Ford 4) Experience guarding those books at teh Armey PX Library 5) Newspaper articles about famous prosinors such as Gentleman Dan Caldwell other movies??? books?? Baths in Mayberry
I watch at least one episode each day of both TAGS and Leave it to Beaver. One thing I have noticed. While the Cleaver's are always after Wally and Beaver to take baths, I can only remember one time during the entire 8 years of TAGS that Opie had to take a bath. And that was when Malcolm made him and Andy bathe before dinner. Are there any other times when Opie was told to take a bath? There must be but I just cannot remember them. Help me out here folks. Now I grew up when baths were a weekly event rather than daily. We didn't have a water heater ( notice I didn't say hot water heater) until I was in high school, so with four kids in the house it was a real chore to have to heat up all that water on the top of a stove. And we didn't have central heating either, so in the winter taking a bath was really an unpleasant occurrence. I was so happy when I got to high school and we were required to take a shower after phy ed. I had phy ed every day too, so that was wonderful. Howard Hesseman
He was in two episodes. The one where Emmitt runs for council, and the one where Goober goes to the car show with Andy. He played a hot dog vendor at the show. WKRP is one of my absolute favorites. -- Teddy Stinker Bear ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Happy Days
Someone mentioned Fonzie and how Happy Days shows declined in later yrs. Didn't the term jump the shark start with a Happy Days episode? Jump the Shark refers to a show where Fonzie is water skiing and jumps over a shark. The term got started from that show and now refers to any show that starts declining after awhile. When the writers run out of material and start writing unbelievable scripts or something that does not fit in. I think of Aunt Bee flying a plane. She certainly couldn't drive a car, as Goober well knows. I think it's a funny term. It makes me laugh every time I hear it. Bee in New Concord, OH Brenda J. Higgins 57 Year Old Mom Looks 27! Howard Hesseman
I know who Howard Hesseman is, and that he later appeared on WKRP in Cincinnati, but in which episode of TAGS did he appear? Suzi, he appeared in a color episode from the last season titled Goober Goes to the Auto Show. He had a brief appearance working at a hot dog stand, as I recall. However, at the time, he was billed as Don Sturdy, not Howard Hesseman. And I don't believe he had his mustache, so he's hard to recognize if you're not looking for him. Definitely a different look from the character he played on WKRP! Thelma Lou (Janet) ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Oscar Trivia
All this Oscar trivia about TAGS got me to thinking about the oldest nominee. There was an actor who appeared on TAGS that was nominated for an Academy Award in 1936 for Best Supporting Actor. He did not win, Walter Brennan won it that year.I know within reason that there is no one who could possibly guess this without looking it up on IMDB. But if you want to play the game and guess before you look it up I will give you a hint. He appeared only once on TAGS, and he appeared the first season. And his character's name was written in a strange place on the show. Orville Hendricks - Peddling Butter and Eggs. You know even Andy and Barney were just small boys in 1936 when this person was nominated. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

re: Barney's Inspirations
I'm not sure if I understood the original message correctly, but here is a short list of Alcatraz-based movies made before (or during) the TAGS years: Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), probably Burt Lancaster’s defining role as Robert The Birdman Stroud The Alcatraz Express (1960) Experiment Alcatraz (1950), mad doctor performing medical experiments on prisoners Train to Alcatraz (1948) Seven Miles from Alcatraz (1942), but Alcatraz was almost incidental to the main story of Nazi spies in San Francisco King of Alcatraz (1938) == A few weeks back I told you of my Visit to Alcatraz, and how that was the likely inspiration to Barney's description of the Mayberry Jail as the Rock It got me to wondering what were all the influenencers of the Lawman that is Brney Fife.
