Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 12, Issue 335 Message #4
One guy who had debt problem was Jim Lindsey. I think it's a great example of trying to live up to a life style (a selfish/ego problem) when your employment status or income status is raised above what you're used to. He didn't need a little red car as most of what we need isn't really a need, just a perception of what we need. When it gets down to it, we have very few needs and I'm sure Paul Mulik can tell ya what's a need and what isn't... Gary A. I think one reason the folks of Mayberry were so happy and content was because they were not consumed by the enormous debts that families of today have. Folks in Mayberry paid for items they needed in one way. They used cash. It wasn't until 1986 and the movie Return to Mayberry did we ever see or hear anyone use a credit card in Mayberry. Barney put the dinner bill at the restaurant on his credit card in the movie. You may have noticed that I said people paid for things they needed with cash. Back in the days of TAGS people were not so materialistic minded. If they really needed something or wanted something, they waited until they saved the money. Barney used his entire nest egg to buy his first car. Even Otis took a second job to earn enough money to buy his car. I think the only time we saw anyone borrowing the money to buy something was when Goober went to the bank to get a loan to buy the gas station, and that was the way real estate is bought. Quite a few of the good citizens of Mayberry didn't even own a car. I recall many folks in our small town who likewise did not have cars. Their lives centered around the town in which they lived and all their needs were usually found right there. While there were those like Frank Myers and the Scobies who had financial difficulties, it was not due to their excessive debts because of unnecessary spending. How great for all those good folks in Mayberry to be able to go to bed at night without worrying about all those credit card payments that would be due at the end of the month. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Credit in Mayberry
Were credit cards even widely used during the time TAGS was on? However there WAS credit. If you'll recall in the episode where Ellie Walker, pharmacy gal, ran for city council, all the menfolk cut off their wives (or aunt's) credit until they agreed not to support Ellie. I remember Mrs Campbell trying on a hat apparently being told she needed cash so she had to put it back. I can remember in the mid 60's/early 70's that the few times we shopped ast the local dept store mama just signed a slip of paper, they mailed her the receipt, she paid her bill. No card needed. And I loved the bills as the store always enclosed a plastic wrapped sheet of smell good paper in scents like Chanel No. 5 or L'air Du Temps. I'd stick those in my nightgown drawer. Questions
Hey Mayberry Fans, I'm a huge TAGS fan and have been for a year and have seen evry TAGS episode at least once, twice or some 3-10 times, almost seen all 150 Gomer Pyle USMC episodes and I might have already finished them or are less than 5 episodes left to see for Gomer Pyle USMC, and have started watching Mayberry RFD I am on the 28 episode, I think. I have a Mayberry Podcast on YouTube called Andy Griffith Shoe Video Podcast on GomerBarnFloyd's YouTube. I've got a few questions for you. Do you know how I can watch the TAGS Reunion Shows (THE 1993 and 2003 one) And also why did Jim Nabors leave his Mayberry TAGS Role of Gomer Pyle to go continue playing Gomer on Gomer Pyle, USMC? Did TAGS ever say how Ernest T. Bass escaped from jail? And Lastly where were the outside and inside scenes filmed and can you still see the outside place or is it torn down? I heard that the outside scenes were done at a place called 40 acres. Is that true? Thanks, John Lane The Andy Griffith Show Video Podcast on YouTube (GomerBarnFloyd) Mayberr ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
This and that
I am so glad to see many back on the newsletter. I always look forward to it everyday. I am also very glad to see our family newsletter make it to year 20. Even more so that Lloyd Nolan has made it to 97. I remember a few days ago we were discussing the bookcase in the sheriff's office getting the glass broken. It had three shelves. I remember theglas getting broken on various occassions. Once with a sling shot, once with Barney shooting , i think, and Virgil. Those come to mind. There are more i am sure. I know at the end of the series there was no glass on the bookcase. Also, why on earth has there not been Mayberry RFD on dvd? It would be so great to have that in my collection. It is similiar with Rifleman. While there are collections out, no dvd by season, yet. Hope Summers was an alumni of Rifleman, leaving to go to the Andy Griffith Show. Next saturday is Quilt Days at Ramsey House in knoxville. I will be giving tours of the house and beautiful quilts will be on display. While it's not andy it's still neat to visit. Bird
An unusual adventure just now!!! Putting away my Halloween things in the basement, I noticed a sparrow trying to get out the window. How in the world??? The only possible way in was through the dryer vent. I caught him when he hit the wall and fell on the cat, who was startled enough to back away. Of course, I said the appropriate words as I turned him loose in the yard: OK, Nod, go look for your brothers!!! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Location of the fishing hole
Has anyone been to Franklin Canyon State Park in Beverly Hills and seen the location of the opening scene of the show? Can anyone describe exactly where it is? I went there and walked around all over the place. I found a location that looks just like the opening credits but I'm just not sure. Since that is the only original filming location that still exists, it's hallowed ground! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
