Re: Well I be dog
The phrase isn’t “dog” but “I’ll be dogged” - as in doggoned, confounded, confused. And, it was a more genteel way of saying “I’ll be darned” since you couldn’t say what you really wanted to say: “I’ll be ...” (well, you know!). Andy’s Parents
As I’m watching TV-Land this morning, Andy is visiting with Howard’s mother, about her dedicating her life to her son. It made we wonder: we know about Mrs. Sprague; Barney bought his parents a septic tank - we even know of Aunt Bea & Aunt Nora - but I don’t recall ever hearing about Andy’s parents. Are we ever told what happened to them? Aunt Bea raised Andy, so was he orphaned? Now, you’re wondering, too, aren’t you? Re: Payphone in Mayberry
In my small hometown (Nowata, OK) as a child, we could still pick-up the receiver to speak to the operator. But, as dial phones came around, there was a payphone on the outside wall of the phone company. It had a dial, a change-slot, everything. When you picked up the receiver, before you could deposit your dime or dial a number, the operator came on to connect you. I guess it was a true transitional time in telephone technology! Re: Denver/Briscoe
Aunt Bea calling him Mr. Briscoe would be no different than someone calling her Miss Bea. Using the title with the first name is commonplace in the south. Citizen’s Arrest (& Hollerin’ Fish)
From Neal Bower’s “Mayberry 101” comes this explanation of Gomer’s comment to Barney in the Citizen’s Arrest episode: The phrase was apparently first introduced on television in the 1963 episode of The Andy Griffith Show. It was put in the “Citizens Arrest” script by show writer Everette Greenbaum. The book “Mayberry 101” gives Greenbaum’s explanation: “‘You just go up an alley and holler fish’ was one of my mother’s sayings. It meant ‘hush up’ and came from the vendors who sold food in the alleys of her Philadelphia childhood.” Perhaps that means if the fish vendors were in the alley rather than the street, their calls wouldn’t be as loud. As Ken has requested, here’s my “simple thank you to Allan for all his hard work” ... but, I can’t think of one thing about Mayberry or TAGS that makes me smile (a thousand things, yes, but not just one!).
